Sm4sh didn't have one because Sakurai didn't like the cutscenes being put on the internet so instead of making cutscenes for a story mode he decided to put the budget into trailers instead. But, there has been only two trailers so he may use the budget for cutscenes again or for a unique opening like melee OR BOTH. Who knows what Sakurai got up his sleeve lol

According to Sakurai in the last part, it essentially was so characters whose performance relied on the stage like little mac didnt get entirely screwed over,(tldr: you can pick your character based on the stage you are fighting on and adapt accordingly)

Raiden The Ripper I didn't know why at first, but that is actually pretty smart and reasonable for them to do.

Another reason I think they did that is that they may want to start the loading of the stage as soon as possible. Since brawl, if you choose your characters. Go to the stage select screen and wait some time then select the stage the loading times were significantly shorter (because it already loaded the characters) But usually in casual sessions people spend more time choosing characters than stages. So doing that may decrease the loading times even more in some matches.

The Ultimate Ninja with all the details they put in smash, i highly doubt it. i mean, they really have to focus on the story mode like they did in brawl but it seems like they're focusing more on characters and stages. i could be wrong but the best we could hope for is an adventure mode like in smash bros melee...

They've said this is a game in production. It's not done. There could still be more characters added, story mode, etc. We'll just have to wait for leaks or another Nintendo Direct before it releases to know what they're still adding.

Nyah Nyahson As a Melee player, this game seems ridiculously similar to Sm4sh. Also, there’s no wavedashing or dash dancing, and the ledge mechanics are just like Sm4sh’s. Not only that, it plays very similar to 4 as well. If you watched the invitational, you’d see that the winning strategy was to play defensively and poke your opponent, which is why two Sm4sh players were in grands. It even looks almost identical. I’m very disappointed with this, not because it’s not like Melee, but because it’s so much like Sm4sh. This is supposed to be a new game, yet it’s almost a port with a couple new characters.

It's Balloon Knockback. It's a deliberate design choice meant to let the player who was launched get right back into the fight as quickly as possible, thus keeping the match well paced. I like this change in concept, but there should be some fine tuning made regarding hitstun and knockback on weaker moves to make it feel more natural.
