I don't know how this popped up in my feed, but i'm sure glad it did! So nice to see so many people my age on the rink. Sure brings back good memories from the good ol' 80's! Good times! Please keep them coming!!
Man does this ever bring back some memories. I could never skate backwards, not even for all the money in the world, but I could skate fast. I miss those days but I’m happy to see people out enjoying themselves !! And did you notice that there wasn’t a single cell phone in anyone’s hands. People being people !! 👏🏻👏🏻
plenty of other videos on YT where the camera is moving with the skaters and I love those shots as well... but this is what it's like to STAND THERE and watch them fly by... It's wonderful!
the personal flair/individualism as well as mods like the pom poms make it so stylish and I can't get enough flavors! Beautiful skate culture! Roll on!
didn't make it to marriage, but I do remember some fantastic moments having young roller rink romances! I love these stories about meeting out on the rink or dancefloor! Cheers! May the wheels ever turn to keep you together!
Wow! This put a smile on my face. I grew up skating in the 70's & 90's I grew up in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh. Next time I come to visit my family in Pittsburgh. I'll have come out and skate. Thanks for sharing!
Brings back memories of when I was 13 and spent every Saturday night at our local roller rink. 😊 The blisters that became the protection for my feet. 😅 How cool that this is making another comeback.
I was a competition speed skater in Australia in the 80s. The rinks on fri n sat nites was a party. Then the invention of rollerblades took it outdoors, then no one went to rinks anymore and 90% of them closed down forever ...it looks like quad skates and rinks are starting to come back into fashion again. If enough new skaters take up this fun way to party, and socialize, n get your cardio fix on instead of pumping away in a boring gym, then more rinks will open due to the demand, and we will have the 70s n 80s back all over again ...such fun memories, for life.
How is skating on quad skates like those? I have played ice hockey for 35 years and have used rollerblades extensively, but never tried those quad wheels.
@@sebastienlemay6120 in the 70s n 80s we only had quads. I did basic figure skating on quads (now called artistic) as a kid to learn my turns and improve balance and quick transitions. Then went onto speed skating. And later even did Roller Hockey for a short while. Ive also done some inline (outdoors), and always hire hockey skates if i go to ice rinks. Basically you just get used to whatever you use and learn to milk it to get it to do what you need to do I found quad hockey was fine but I've heard inline is faster. As a speed skater (w the agility of early figure lessons), i took to Quad Hockey quite easily.
@sebastienlemay6120 I grew up speed skating and shuffling so quads feel like home to me. I also skate on speed inlines but feel like I can’t dance anywhere near as much on them compared to quads - simple mechanics. So for me, quads in the rink and inlines for outdoor skate marathons.
OMG ! I LOVED ROLLER SKATING!! LOVED IT . EVERY SINGLE FRIDAY, SATURDAY, WEDNESDAY ROLLER DERBY, EVERY ALL NIGHT SKATE ,AND OF COURSE THEY WOULD HAVE SPECIAL ALL NIGHT EVENTS. I MISS ROLLER SKATING SO MUCH,I AGREE WITH AMERICA DOES NEED MORE RINKS !!! ❤
Wow I wish we had these in Scotland,.,in the 70s I grew up roller skating ,learned all the tricks …..haven’t done this for decades but I’m sure it would come back to me
I know it sounds silly. Skated (and skied) all my life, of course full time weekends jr. High and High School, then worked in a rink when in college. Went as an adult to stay in shape for skiing and just having fun. Then back injuries kicked in at 42 and haven't been able to skate or ski since. We used to do the exact moves back then. This video had me in tears. Keep it up folks.
Sorry about your back! One of the worst things about skating is knowing that some day you won’t be able to - for what ever reason. Just gotta do it until ya can’t. The classic shuffle stride never gets old when your rolling to the beat.
So true. Although for me these days, each week we hit a few weekday evening family sessions and an adult night where we can! Plus travel skate events once or twice a month. Tons of rinks still jammin’!
My Mom used to just dance on skates she grew up in the 40s was at the rink every weekend. The first time she took me skating I couldn't believe how good she was. All the rinks are gone now. We need these again for kids to have something to do. Great exercise and fun.
its good to see people roller skating still. It was such a fun time in my young life we used to every week at least once. now im 50 and in such poor health i'd break the floor my hip probably a leg or two from one fall! lol i do need to hear some queen another one bites the dust honestly when i'd hear that on the radio my mind starts my body moving side to side like im skating again!
This brought back soooo many great memories! Spent every weekend and Tuesday nights in the late 70's at the Oak Lawn rink in Illinois. We did the shuffle, foxtrot, skated backwards, you name it! Haven't been on wheels in about 5 years at least but I keep saying I'm gonna take the grands. I'd love to get back into it but the older I get, the more I worry about injuries! Don't heal as quick as I used to....Thanks for posting this!
The skate rink was my 2nd home before I got my drivers license. I was there Tues nights, Fri nights, Sat pretty much all day and night, same for Sundays. Then of course, the over-night skates (those were the best). I grew up in an abusive household and the rink was a place I could always go to and know I was safe. Plus music was a big factor in my life at the time, as well. It was my escape. I was the only girl who could keep up with the speed skating boys, it was just pure freedom! The rink is definitely where I ended up getting my need, my need for speed. Once I got my license and bought my 1st sports car, that became my new escape. Crank the music and just drive... I'm 51 now, still have a sports car (convertible) and some of my best times are hitting the open road, too down and rocking out. I still wish I could skate, since it's making a comeback...but I've had 3 surgeries on my left foot and am left with major painful complications. I can barely wear a shoe, there's no way I could put a skate on and put pressure on that foot needed to skate. These videos make me happy and also cry, for the great times I had and the times I'll never have again...I can just enjoy vicariously through these people. So, thank you!
❤❤I love this so much! I grew up roller skating at Spinning Wheels in Pittsburgh, PA and Thrills on Wheels in Ambridge, PA. I would give anything to go back to those days! 😌😌
Wow that brought back so many memories! Thank you:) I hadn’t smiled watching roller skating in a really long time. Took me back to jr high and hide school!
@licksnkicks1166 don’t worry about what others think. Get out there and enjoy it. I know amazing skaters and beginners alike that wear protective gear for various reason. Just have fun!
Damn this is cool! Loved the roller rink as a kid in the 70's and 80's. Wish they had something like this near me although I'd probably end up with my skates in my face😅
I so enjoyed this, thank you! What I really enjoyed seeing was a melting pot of different people, young and old, skinny and chunky, , etc just out enjoying themselves. It made me want to find a skating rink and go.
This was at a USA Shuffle Skate weekend event hosted by Sparkles in Hiram and Kennesaw, Georgia just outside of Atlanta. Skaters that love this kind of skating come from all over!
It’s so heartbreaking to lose a rink. I hope there’s another one you can get to and enjoy. I drive an hour to my favorite rinks. The cardio and fun is worth it! 🛼🪩
