I'm a Muay Thai/Karate/Tae Kwon Do/Judo & Jiu jitsu guy... But after seeing this I can see how Chi Sao can help being more effective in the 'Perry' aspect of Thai & Boxing for MMA/Street. The crummy part about this observation is that we will not see great Chi Sao in MMA for many years. This video just got me hooked on learning some Chi Sao. Consider me a believer of Wing Chun!

@kingensai
@kingensai 15 лет назад
The idea of improving hand sensitivity and using that as a suppliment to percieving your opponent's moves is a superb one, simply because if you train your reflexes to be based on sensation, the information doesn't have to travel through as many processing centers and therefore take less time to process. In a case, that means that your reaction time goes much faster than you would with vision only.

Every true martial art exists for a reason, they have different styles, but in the end it's a way of practising defense, spirit, mentality, and above all, respect. That's why it is called art. Well I learned that I must be very pugilistically conditioned for combatives and master the spiral for static stepping and circle stepping while following, linking, adhering, sticking, never resisting or releasing. The use and application of Gary Lam elemental hand movement theory should also be mastered. The infighting circle stepping is the key to testing the kung fu of these exceptional Kung Fu adepts.... The master who is demonstrating has awesome static stepping kung fu using Cho Sao... I think his San Shou would be exceptional too.... I would sharpen and use the techniques I mentioned to engage him... I imagine working with him and because of my experience can see the possibilities of growing in knowledge when crossing hands with him... that's how you learn or at least how I learn by viewing the vids.... maybe that's how others learn

@zoolkhan
@zoolkhan 9 лет назад
***** i am happy for you mate. knifes are bad - i would have knocked the man out, especially if he had friends. it was lucky his grip was so loose.. he was surprised... i have been tought to grab the wrist - if circumstances allow - in order not to give him the chance to thrust a 2nd time. So maybe i would grab the wrist after initial defense (sticky hands) with both hands and then bend the hand until he goes down in pain.(if you take his wrist and palm in both your hands and then bend it backwards full force there is nothing he can do, he will drop the weapon) - even if he uses the opening in my defense with the other hand, i rather take a fist to my face, than give him another chance with the blade. alternatively, if youre outside of his wrist hand, take his wrist in with your blocking hand (maan-sao) and stretch it out in his original vector (lap-sao) keep it stretched while you do a 180 degree turn with your body close to him, so you can ram his outstretched arm with your other side shoulder - his ellbow-joint will break. And he will not attack you with that knife hand again. just a few examples.. there is more. anyhow, cannot be explained well enough in forum , this need to be trained (very carefully.. its easy to damage training partner with this drill) - also depend on whether knife is trusted , or slashed etc etc anyhow, well done - happy you got out of the situation.
@zoolkhan
@zoolkhan 9 лет назад
***** he is right, do not focus on the knife - but the wrist holding the knife. dont grab the blade - and dont allow the opponent to have 2nd and 3rd try with the blade either... it does make sense, doesnt it? of course in wing chun we do many things same time - so deflection, lapsao, - is in parallel with the punch/kicks to throat and groin... followed by disarming ....but as i said earlier: i cannot explain it well in writing, i would be happy to demo this life - and then you may see that our philosophies match closer than it appear now. And we also havent established whether the attack is the same that i have in front of my inner eye now... thrust, hack, slash, deep, high, backhand?, forehand? , inside , outside ... etc etc etc but one thing is key - do not give that guy more than one chance to attack, you have to disarm him, or disable him or both. if you ignore the knife and punch his face only - then you are playing with your lifes and you will pay a very high tuition fee for that lesson

Great chisao... to people from other MA, chi sao is not a fight, it is a teaching technique for reflexes. By this technique you learn to feel hands of enemy when you contact them on your way to enemy throat and you also learn how to flow around enemys hands. You can see Emin is not hitin his sparring partner, but slightly touching his forehead to let him know he passed trough his posture. Deffinetelly not a fight. I like this chisao demonstration. Si-fu Emin is imho really good at WT.

If you want to learn the right way check out Philipp Bayer and watch what he has to offer or anyone who is under Wong Shun Leung. I studied under someone before and literally had to start over because i had it all wrong. Also look up David Peterson. He explains it completely better than anyone else.

love wing chun and dont regret it,it makes more sense than most martial arts,you may have practiced 12 years but you could have spent all of that time without really putting effort to it,if you practice with a closed mind i dont think that you will be able to achieve anything,wing chun as any other martial arts takes training,the higher level you get on these exercises the toughest it is to do it making it as real as a street fight,what you are watching is just a small and simple demonstration

Wing chun is the most effective martial art system, and is the one that everyone should learn first. This system is based upon scientific principles of the human skeletal structure. Key aspects of Wing chun are the understanding Centre line principle, maintaining a solid structure, relaxed chain punching and energy drills (such as the Chi Sao, sticky hands drill). Everything in the 3 hand forms are there for a reason and each movement has an specific application. Master this martial art first!

Very few people will argue with this. WT is primarily a close-range striking art. It will be more than enough for use against an untrained guy on the streets, but anyone who trains for the ring or against other martial artists becomes skilled in multiple martial arts. What I want to learn next is a good throwing-grappling martial art, or a groundfighting style other than bjj or wrestling.

@luisin1984 Just curious here, not criticizing anything. What would happen were you to meet an MMA fighter in a street brawl. Wouldn't knowing grappling be a necessity to win?
@SilientShadow
@SilientShadow 15 лет назад
No, the primary purpose of Chi Sao (from the WT substyle) is to develop softness and practice advanced techniques. Notice how when Casey strikes, Emin shifts his stance and moves out of the way. If you're fighting someone big and strong, you might not be strong enough to move his attacks away from your body. In that case, you'll need to get out of the path of the strike. That's why we spend so much time with Chi Sao.

I agree with you on the idea that a fighting style has more practical application than a martial art, however as far as my personal experience with WT goes it's very direct and practical. Depends on the teacher of course, and which art-ish elements he included. But the way I was instructed basically only involved how to take somebody out as fast as possible. I have not yet been in a situation where I needed to use it, but I think with some years experience it should have results.

Let me put it to you this way. All the people I train with are as fast if not faster then Emin. The speed comes from the form, you learn to leverage your bodyweight in WC over strength. The form aligns your center of gravity with your arm so your entire body smashes into your opponent through your fist. In most martial arts you train to develop better speed and power, in WC you train to loosen your joints so that your natural power can flow through them. In WC it really is all about the form
@lordtains
@lordtains 15 лет назад
True. The mind will always be slower than the body. The only way the mind can be faster is by predicting an incoming attack and anticipating the opponent's rhythm (sensen no sen, moving before the opponent attacks). It takes a few years before Wing Chun becomes effective, but that's the case for most arts. Doing multiple styles is the best way to go though.

My Bjj instructor is an expert in Aikido and Aikido has some similarities(sp?) with Wing Tsun in the terms of energy flow,and he said that for self defense Wing Tsun is an excelent martial art to mix with Bjj.He said WT is great on its own but if it goes to the ground its robbed of all its attacks,thats why it should be mixed with a grappling art.

Viva EBMAS! Go train with SIfu Emin and ask questions. He is a nice guy and a great teacher. He gets it if people do not agree with him. A little sparring though and one can draw one's own conclusions.

The other guy looked like he is just there to make Boztepe look good. But it´s easy to judge from the outside. Boztepe seems to have a good feeling for pressure and counterpressure. He is pretty fast because he is using almost no energy. Everythings seems natural. Good vid.

just a drill everyone, no need to get alarmed and start calling it out. all it does is teach sensitivity to the arms so there is no though process, just a reaction, and it can be used in many other styles of fighting even in grappling
