Welcome aboard one of the finest and rarest Bristol Lodekkas in preservation! Eastern National's last, of 247 bought, was also the last one built and has been beautifully restored to as-new condition, with full coach seating and luggage racks.
Built to the longer 31ft length, it is fitted with 5-speed semi-automatic gearbox, which gives a very rich aural treat, with high-pitched, very loud whines in each gear ratio.
After a long wait of 32 years since they last ran, it's my great pleasure to share these fabulous sounds with you now - I hope you enjoy them!
On a re-run of Eastern National's famous 251 route (Southend Seaway-London Wood Green) we are 4 miles from Romford on the A12 dual-carriageway, making quite fast progress, catching up veteran Bristol L6B coach PTW 110 near the Moby Dick.

I remember these vehicles passing the office on the Southend Road where I used to work at Gants Hill, Ilford. They looked fine vehicles (they weren't actually very old at the time !) and I was aware they were semi's, but had no idea they were Leyland engined. Rare indeed !

Remember the old VRs (School buses) sounded exactly the same!!! But the drivers were not as gentle gear changing as this guy..it was floor the throttle and the only time you lifted your foot was to apply the brake to stop..it was use the sharp shift method of changing and see how much of a bang the gearbox would make on the change of gear....sometimes they would make a bang..... A final one when the gearbox left its contents on the road!!! needless to say no school that day!!!

The earliest VRs had a very similar sound, but because the gearbox and transfer gears were at the rear, all the sound went out of the back.
