Superbooth 2023: Sleepy Circuits - Hypno - Semi Modular Video Synth with Live Camera Inputs

We spoke to Ronald from Sleepy Circuits at their first Superbooth about Hypno, an all-in-one semi-modular video synthesizer. Ronald aims to get as many people as possible into visuals and solve the problem of having to use multiple boxes. The Hypno does everything from live camera inputs to sampling video, including generative visuals. The device has two sides, A and B, with frequency, rotation, polarization, and Y offset on some shapes. There is a feedback control that zooms in the feedback, providing pseudo 3D effects, and five different feedback modes. The device has an internal patching system with modulation that allows for cross-modulation and the ability to affect the magnitude of that modulation. There are regular Euro rack range CV inputs and outputs that enable synthesizing video as well as audio for a synaesthetic effect.
The device has a USB port that enables you to store and recall preset patches and navigate folders of video loops. You can also take one shape out, allowing for the addition of video loops, and a help text feature to navigate files.

So Ronald is “sleepy”? 😁 I’m kidding of course. I’m an early adopter of Hypno, and it’s an amazing piece of gear. The control scheme is a little esoteric for me - I’d love to have a little control board rather than everything being multiple key presses… or a standardized mapping for a Korg nanocontrol thingy… but these are minor complaints seeing as the value packed into the tiny Hypno.

The Mezzz app will do 4K (based on your computers’ power ofc) the Hypno is not quite there but that’s mostly Bc the Pi just can’t crank those kind of graphics (also a beefier chip would cost a lot more and require active cooling) -Ron

For the price, i would need an HDMI in / passthrough, or an NDI solution built in for both in and out. Otherwise for the price you are so close to Resolume which can be used with any controller, audio input, video input, etc. I think this has a lot of promise, but the price is the main concern for what it delivers. It is very cool to have this though. Just needs a bit more features at a sub $500 price. Also, including something like WLED would be useful. Maybe something that mimics the colors / patterns on the LEDs of the onscreen visuals. I also think that having this be digital instead of analog really opens up the possibility of sound reactive modes, or network commands. For instance having the audience / viewers be able to control some aspects of it even if it is just colors. I think the hue control is limiting as it stands because it will always cycle through colors and getting a specific color is difficult being a knob instead of buttons. I like this though, and the form factor of being eurorack compatible is excellent. However I think this could be part of a larger ecosystem where different devices could work well together like was shown with the prototype midi unit. Take a look at the wolfmix dmx lighting controller. That would be the ideal form factor for perhaps a hardware visuals controller, but perhaps with 2 screens so that proper cue and program windows can be utilized. Thank you for thinking of live performance. It is such a needed focus in today's music market.
