At Superbooth 2024, Sonic State had the opportunity to talk to Nick from Buchla about the new Music Easel Retro*. This new offering from *Buchla is a blend of the classic Music Easel and the 50th-anniversary edition, designed to appeal to fans of the old school style briefcase enclosure. Priced at 5,000 US Street, the Music Easel Retro features an aluminum suitcase design and retro Rogan knobs, providing a nostalgic yet modern experience. With improvements such as USB-C, 5-pin MIDI over 3.5-millimeter jack, and enhancements from over 50 years of history, the Music Easel Retro offers a unique blend of past and present technology.
During the interview, Nick demonstrated the capabilities of the Music Easel Retro, showcasing a repeating ostinato and complex oscillator sounds. With features like sequential voltages in four-step mode and pitch modulation inputs, the Music Easel Retro offers a versatile and dynamic sound palette. Nick also utilized the Maris LVX stereo delay pedal and internal spring reverb to further enhance the sonic possibilities.
Music Easel Retro Price: 4,999 USD

Great demo. I've always wanted one of these and I'm certain if I work all day and night and never give up, I will still not be able to afford one 😆

thanks!! i didnt have much time to tune the sequential voltage for the arp, since i usually use the keyboard for the ostinato and the sequential voltage for the bass, but i still tried to show the sound pallette available on this wonderful instrument

Great demo, Nick you have to do more to let people understand what an Easel is. Is there a site to share recall sheets (even if based on my small experience the main interesting thing in an easel sound is the path not the goal). nb: owner of a modern since a few weeks, I had a Roman clone version and decided to get a modern as self 50th birthday present 😂 Cya from .be

While this is a great video, the best is Nick's performance over the same weekend. It's pure inspiration... kinda one of those "I'm going to sell everything and just use an easel from now on" things... a master at work!

Weren't Behringer going to bring out an affordable version of The Easel called "Enigma" - or did I imagine that?

Nick is an amazing musician. Don't get it why companies don't get more talented musicians for their presenters. Maybe it's not so much about art and more about the industry and selling technical equipment called synthesizers. As much is I love synthesizers myself, the business and sales part takes over too much in the last years. But I'm happy, I can still watch the trustworthy Nick Bath and don't get annoyed.

All that space, and still they use 3.5mm mini-jack MIDI? What's up with that? Anyway, as ever it's still a great instrument with a nice recognisable sound, and a brilliant demonstration.

Allow me to. $5000 and they can't be bothered to include proper MIDI jacks nor even MIDI Thru.
@ledheavy26
@ledheavy26 2 месяца назад
I came here to complain about it. They've got that huge panel taking up an eighth of the case and they still give you midi on 3.5mm breakout jacks. C'mon.

Too bad they kept the green color for the modulation oscillator. Blue is more like the original.
@johnbeer2854
@johnbeer2854 2 месяца назад
You can hear with the arpeggio around 3.30 that they really haven't made an effort to sort out the tracking. The tuning is terrible, made worse by him adding the other oscillator until he quickly makes the envelope shorter to hide it.
@pyrofiliac
@pyrofiliac 2 месяца назад
yeah bro, its because the arpeggio is using an unquantized sequential voltage source. it has nothing to do with tracking.
@johnbeer2854
@johnbeer2854 2 месяца назад
@@pyrofiliac Well 'bro' , if you notice steps 1+4 are in the bottom and top positions, and these are usually always in tune with each other. Of course the interval will change as you raise the pitch amount of the oscillator, but it tends to stretch the range in tune with itself. You would know this if you took 2 seconds to look, before writing a comment on the internet.
@pyrofiliac
@pyrofiliac 2 месяца назад
@@johnbeer2854what do you mean by this? the sequential voltage source is simply a source of control voltage. the interval between the bottom and the top is determined entirely by the position of the input attenuator for the pitch control voltage input. because this is the case, you can have any range of pitches you want, up to several octaves, or less than an octave, or anything in between
@johnbeer2854
@johnbeer2854 2 месяца назад
@@pyrofiliac I mean there is no time when increasing or decreasing the attenuator that the tuning between top and bottom sequencer pitch ever really leaves an in tune western scale. At least not on my BEMI Easel. This video sounds like bad tracking/scaling, which is something the BEMI easel suffers from when played on the keyboard.
@pyrofiliac
@pyrofiliac 2 месяца назад
@@johnbeer2854 so, once again, the arpeggio in this video is not coming from the keyboard. it's being played by the sequential voltage. which is not quantized. the 218e touch activated voltage source on the new easels has none of the documented tuning issues of the bemi easels. you made an assumption that the arpeggio in this video was coming from the 218e. it is not. it is coming from the sequential voltage source. so the poor tuning is entirely my fault due to not setting the sequential voltage sliders precisely enough, and not the fault of the equipment.

IT IS HYPER EXPENSIVE AND IS NOT AT ALL LIKE THE ORIGINAL IF YOU OPEN AND SEE INSIDE !!! what people wanted from Music Easel is the exact recreation of the vintage circuitry (who cares about enclosure purism, is the circuitry that make the sound), this thing is surface mount circuitry inside exactly same tech like every of the shelf Behringer “ BUT HEY IT HAS A BEAUTIFUL ALUMINUM CASE AND BEAUTIFUL KNOBS 🤦🏼‍♂️ “
@wurlinnawurl
@wurlinnawurl 2 месяца назад
No way.. they can't keep making thru hole anymore, the parts are going instinct.. But the smt parts are just as high quality and this sounds alive in a way a beringer never will..
@Bigger-Circuitry-Bigger-SOUND
@Bigger-Circuitry-Bigger-SOUND 2 месяца назад
@@wurlinnawurl disagree i have the original one compared it with the new one and the new one timbre was different than we opened to see how is build inside and than understood why because is completely another thing!!! If you want to make a SMT Easel is ok but say it don’t talk about “aluminum enclosure designed by buchla”, Don is not a legend for making beautiful enclosures but for creating suoerb through hole circuitry / synths, the price is totally out of proportion for what you get. in my opinion this is just a marketing trick thing to make spend some money to rich young inexperienced kids that want to look cool but there is no substance inside the new music easel unfortunately 🤷‍♂️. I love American synth more than Japanese counterpart but in this point in time only Studio Electronics is worth the money and real substance, the rest is cool cases empty inside 🤷‍♂️
