Episode 7
Many sequels on the NES are considered to be BETTER than the originals - Mega Man 2, and Super Mario Bros 3 are just two examples of sequels that rank much higher than the games that preceded them. Super C is arguably better than the original Contra - everything is upgraded, but it still retains the great flavor of the first game. So why is the original Contra ranked so much higher in the hearts of classic gamers?
In this video I'll answer that question, and then we'll be doing a deep dive on game that defines the term "NES Hard!" We'll also see:
*The location of EVERY Spread gun, so you'll never be without a great weapon!
*How to tackle ALL of the difficult stages!
*The new Konami code for more lives!
*Advanced strategies for defeating the bosses - Secret safe spots, and more!
Thanks for watching!

The name is so stupid. I LOVED Contra as a kid. I played it through so many times. And yet somehow I thought Super C was some weird spinoff. I didn't learn the truth until Contra 3 came out. I still haven't gotten around to playing Super C.

The second boss, you can sneak behind him asap. That way you can kill him faster. The forth boss, you can break the middle lasers and stay under it. You will be safe under that blind spot and then eventually take out the lasers from middle toward left and right. Always keep the right and left most laser last for safety. On the last boss. I did quite the same except walk from the ground toward the leg without climb up. When you kill it, you can quickly climb to the top right of the screen. There you can see your character floating mid air during the ending. When play on emulator, you can put both player the same button layout and select 2 players. With the same control, you can combine 2 characters to become one with double the fire power. Sometime I call the laser gun light saber when fire it very fast.
@DavidWonn
@DavidWonn 3 года назад
I generally preferred the Fireball gun over Spread in this version, as it could deliver massive damage with the charged version (9x damage) followed quickly by a regular shot (5x damage) when the timing is mastered. A Fireball player with a Spread partner just wrecks the game as one can expect. On the other hand, a fun challenge is not just beating the game on one life, but also picking up every power-up, even if it downgrades the current weapon. It’s trickier than it sounds, as some power-ups spawn in hard-to-reach places at times, especially in the final levels. I made a video a while back that demonstrates this challenge, along with the rules in the description if anyone is interested in trying it out.

I agree with the fireball weapon. A neat trick to do with fireball is stand on the spider miniboss in level 3 and jump up and shoot down at the spider it will harm it while you stay safe.
@DavidWonn
@DavidWonn 3 года назад
@@Jopo1226 Oh indeed, the explosions from the fireball have their handy uses, as I’m aware of the method you refer to. The method is slower than a direct assault, but extremely safe as you mention, and a fun way to show to friends. The vertical section of stage 4 naturally has places to take out guns from the explosions without ever exposing the player to any line of fire. The fireball's spiritual successor, the Crush gun in Contra 3, also has some similar exploits in hitting some mini-bosses from the "wrong" side, such as the first one in stage 3. And the flamethrower in that game is even more fun in doing similar exploits, so I almost always like to have at least one in reserve. :-)

In stage 2, there is an easier way to progress. After you get the last 2 turret before you go to the bridge, if you have the spread shot, you can line yourself in the middle and continually shoot and walk forward. Don't stop. The spread will take out most if not all of the soldiers and the turrets you pass won't be able to target you in time. You can get all the way to the door like this. When you get to the boss, you have enough time to get all the way behind him and shoot the main soldier directly, and their shots won't be able to touch you.

One thing I always liked to do on the Laser Chandelier was to start attacking the center. If you knock out the lasers in the middle, you can stay safe in the middle, since the boss never scrolls the still intact lasers off screen.

I believe It is a mixture, at the end of the Famicom (Japanese version of the NES) Contra, if you held down Select and Start as the island exploding cutscene was playing, and held them down the entirety of the credits a secret messaged appeared that translated to something along the lines of, "Foolish Earthlings! Did you really think you destroyed us? We will take over all of Earth's Bases and by the time you realize it, it will be too late. Red Falcon will Live Forever!" (source: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6cwsTUCT2_Y.html). Then in Super C we clearly see some Soldiers are Aliens in Disguise in Stage 7. But Stage 2 is called Fort Firestorms Warped Mind Command Center, hinting that some soldiers are actually human, but are just mind controlled to do Red Falcons bidding.

One thing that is worth noting with the spread gun, though it seems counter intuitive, is not using a turbo setting and spacing the timing of your shots. The reason for this is that the spread gun only allows so many bullets on the screen at a time per player so if you are rapid mashing or turbo setting on the fire button, you get a less effective (not as wide) spread.

Super Cool guide! Super C was an absolute nightmare from my childhood, as the one hit and your dead concept was a bit too much to ask for from me at that particular point in time, much like Battletoads of course hahaha! I got up to Area 4 before getting TERMINATED during the elevator shaft boss battle. That being said, despite the harsh difficulty, I really enjoyed Super C's awesome music and kick ass action, which led me to reacquire and play this game again years later as an adult (lent the game to a friend back in 1992 and never got it back, unfortunately!). Anyway, long story short, just finishing Super C was not enough, so I decided to put myself through a single player 2P mode (letting the aliens kill off 1P Bill on purpose right off the bat, so that 2P Lance is left with even more enemies to deal with, but normal bosses/while most video games make the bosses take more damage while on 2P mode, Super C does not, surprisingly enough!) no items no deaths run. I opted to give 2P Lance (the red hero John Rambo clone, or Rance as he goes by in Japan) a chance, as most single player runs feature 1P Bill (the blue hero, Alan "Dutch" Schaefer clone): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C64vQKtG7gI.html Yeah, that final boss is such a letdown and is one of the most anticlimactic final battles in video gaming history hahaha! However, Vigo from Ghostbusters II on the NES remains the most anticlimactic, as the game literally beats him for you and his painting pathetically melts into oblivion hahaha! And for the record, Super C for the NES was the first Contra related video game that I ever played/finished and remains my favorite to this day, on that nostalgic basis :).

I came here after watching your Contra video! I actually never owned the original Contra as a kid, but I did own Super C. Also, for some reason, Super C was available on the Wii Virtual Console (as well as Contra 3), but the original Contra was never on there. I got Super C and Mega Man 3 for Christmas one year. What a holiday! I think that I kind of prefer Super C to the original. I like how much of a graphical improvement Super C is. In particular, I like the selection of colors used in each stage. The sprites seem a lot more detailed. I also liked how the level design wasn't just straight left-to-right, or bottom-to-top. Some levels, such as Levels 5 and 8, have you moving both horizontally and vertically in the same stage. I agree with you that one of the reasons that this game wasn't as possible as the original may have been its name. I think that for a lot of people, "Super C" didn't immediately signal that the game was "Contra 2". I also think that the lack of the 30 lives code may have been a factor, because Super C's first level is a lot more difficult than Contra's, and a lot of players may have never been able to get past the first two levels on just 3 (or even 10) lives. By the way, I never knew about the trick that you showed for defeating the Level 3 mid-boss (the multi-leg walker thing)!
@frozenburst6463
@frozenburst6463 3 года назад
Yeah, when I first played Super C, I needed the code just to beat the first level, I eventually got good enough to beat level 2 or 3 with the code. It wasn't until I beat the arcade of contra 1 and 2 from the arcade and watched guides that I got better with Super C.

Slowdown with a lot of enemies on the screen of the original contra was a FEATURE to be enjoyed with friends. Like combining the wow factor of the 360 matrix scenes (a decade+ earlier) with the heightened urgency to concentrate in avoiding obstacles. Therefore its removal in subsequent titles should not be classified as improvements as argued at 0:58.

On the laser chandelier, I find it's helpful to take out the 2nd and 3rd lasers from the left first, then you have a nice umbrella to stand under to avoid laser fire, as you take out the remaining 'middle lasers', saving the end ones for last. When you leave the end lasers for last, it's not able to scroll offscreen, keeping your umbrella intact.

Agree, I do think Super C is superior to Contra in a number of ways. It's a bit more polished, gameplay is a bit more fluid, the difficulty is a bit more balanced, and although Contra's soundtrack is great, Super C's is just rockin' - one of Konami's best on NES.

@U Can Beat Games The best method for taking out the Level 4 boss is to get directly under the laser array then use the spread gun to chew the center out of the laser emitters and continue shooting them from the center line out, you'll have to stay in the dead spot you created but it is very fast and very safe.

I thnik that's what really elevates Super C over Contra is you have viable options besides spread. The fireball and spread both have situations where they shine, so when my younger brother and I played, we each take one weapon and smash the game. If you charge, and immediate press the fire button you can fire another shot directly after the large fireball for maxium damage.

It wasn't after the internet came out that I learned that nearly everyone cheated in these games. I only did when I played 2 players with someone who insisted which didn't bug me because they always ate my @%@ing lives anyway. I find it mind-boggling that everyone admits to cheating at this game cuz it was too hard, and yet m any of the same people pretend (I can't believe they actually liked it) to think Battletoads is some kind of great game. It's impossible in 2 players due to poor design/lack of testing, and it's barely a beatemup. It's mostly just a big 1 hit kill obstacle course memorization puzzle game. Anyway I loved Super C, more than the original Contra, and I didn't even use the Spread gun. My fave was the F (in super C, in the original F was hot garbage). That thing curb-stomps everything that has a decent number of hitpoints, it also spreads a little bit w ith its explosions, and if you are getting swarmed up close, a jump and shoot down will take em out at a relatively safe distance. But yeah, that thing 1 shots all the helecopter turrets, 2 shot its final weak spot, and 1shot lots of other things that takes many shots to kill if you charge it (which btw, doesn't have a charge timer, it's just hold the button down for like 1/4 of a second and let go and it's charged). *done watching video*. Yeah F is prob not as good as S for stage 6, but I don't think stage 6 is hard at all except for those mouth things which can kinda screw you over regardless of weapon, but for stage 7. it's about as good as S for breaking thru the green stuff as long as you charge shot when you shoot down, and more importantly, it's much better at taking out the hatchers afterwards not only in terms of speed, but it can get the ones the 'S' can't reach at all due to its explosion being able to access them at angles the floor otherwise blocks.. I didn't know you could kill the horns on the boss though, lol. F is also good for the final stage with the ceiling coming down on your head p art because the explosions from F aren't blocked by walls, so you can get those homing egg things thru the wall at a much safer distance even when the ceiling is in the way. I imagine I'm not going to convince anyone who swears by 'S' to change at this point, but even if you are, F is very much a top tier weapon too, so you should be able to proceed fine with it instead.
@UCanBeatVideoGames
@UCanBeatVideoGames 3 года назад
I don't disagree - they really made the F weapon a lot better in this game, and they toned the Spread Gun down a bit, so they're much closer to even. There's definitely situations where the F weapon is better, and honestly, that's the hallmark of good design. I think there are some niche uses of the F weapon in the original - its actually pretty good against the second boss, for example - but its so much worse 95% of the time that you'd never actively want it, and may even prefer your standard pea shooter. Thanks for watching!

@@frozenburst6463 The only gun you can have a rapid by lvl 2 is the machine. The rest you can't get a rapid till later, so for level 2 you probably will need take the fireball for greater range. By level you have several chances to have another weapon with rapid, but matter of surviving that long with it on lvl 6.

There are a few problems: -I agree with you that the spread gun is one of the best in the game, however, there are several places where it is weaker than the Fire Gun. Most Notably levels 7 and 8. In the former, you can kill the purple pods below you by firing at the floor, though one of the requires charging it. In the latter, it makes the section where the ceiling drops safer, as you can destroy the "alien eggs" by just shooting the ceiling. It also gets more range in the overhead levels, and to me, the things that shoot at you from far away are a greater threat than the random spawns. -In level 3, there's actually an easier and safer way to deal with the orb launchers, simply scroll the screen slowly and stop the instant they fire. You can then move to the back of the screen to avoid getting hit, you'll have to jump over some explosions, but it's overall safer. For the miniboss, many find it safer to just jump on it, wait for it to fire, jump off, shoot it up, then jump back on. Your strategy, while solid, requires precise positioning. -On the level 4 boss, it's WAY safer to take out the MIDDLE turrets first, then carve your way outward. This gives you a safe place to be until there is only one turret left. Also, the blue orbs at the beginning DO stop spawning, so you can just shoot them until that happens instead of running under them. -You don't have to kill Jagger Froid's Dragon. It actually travels a set path no matter your position. Just stand a distance in front of Jagger Froid, and it'll circle around you, while still leaving you enough room to destroy his shots, then exit left. -It's actually possible to jump to the slope above the spit statues in level 8 right about as they start firing. It's risky, but arguably less so than ducking while hoping not to get flanked by the runners.

I have a Super Contra clone cartridge, manufactured in Brazil by a company called CCE which was sold under the name of a subsidiary company called Audax. In this cartridge, when entering the 30 lives code, we receive 200, simbolized by (K1) and there is still another curiosity, if we gain one more life, the amount changes to 100.

Super Contra just didn't do it for me. Never owned it. Borrowed it from a friend. Even though I thought it looked great, it didn't have enough of a different feel, I suppose. I also think the music isn't quite as good as the original. Maybe I just wasn't interested in run-and-gun games by that point? I was more into Genesis at that time and playing a lot of Phantasy Star II, Mystic Defender, and Revenge of Shinobi. It's not that I thought Super Contra was a bad game, it just didn't have the same impact the original did.

Super C is a phenomenal game. In my opinion, better than Contra as well. It’s also way more challenging than the first entry, which makes it just that much more fun for me. Every kid of my generation played Contra and for this reason it’s highly nostalgic. I hypothesize that Super C gets overlooked because it lacks this nostalgic connection for most players.

Anytime you see a difficulty change or code removal in the American version of an old game, it’s usually because of the US rental market. Rentals weren’t really a thing in other regions; people tended to buy their games. In the US, the fear was that if a game was too easy, people would rent it and beat it during the rental period, which would discourage them from purchasing the game.

Spread gun is the most convenient gun to use - but F is objectively more powerful in terms of pure damage output. R upgrade appears to stack - so if you stay alive and keep collecting them, you will end up with some nicely buffed weapon. Area 4 bubble spawners at the start are not infinite - they can be depleted - so do this if you don't feel comfortable moving under them when they still spawn. Dropping barrels can be destroyed once they start falling - easy to do with F gun. There is a safer strategy against that laser chandelier boss - the pattern is easy but it can get you cornered - there is not enough time to move between laser shots - if you are destroying outward guns first, it will keep moving to the border of the screen. Instead of doing that - destroy middle guns first and just stay under it - it will create a safe spot. Area 5 boss can be destroyed easily with F gun, if it has couple of R upgrades on it, before it launches first projectile. Cheesy, but saves you a lot of trouble. Area 6 rotating alien heads will eventually close up on you - do not delay too much with dealing with them Final level - spawning alien embryos in a section with ceiling dropping on you - they can be destroyed through the ceiling if you have the F gun.

I'm pretty sure the reason why the North American version only gave you 10 lives with the code was to prevent kids from renting and beating the game in a single weekend. Game rentals were illegal in Japan, that's why they got 30 lives.

I vastly prefer Super C to Contra. Contra has alot more mean spirited cheap shots(Like the spike walls that pop up in the hangar or the snipers in the water that wait till you pass to attack at hard to counter angles.) and the enemies attack more aggressively. The enemies in Super C have a much more staggered rate and the patterns are easier to catch even on your first playthru. If it wasn't for the 30 live code I imagine more people would have preferred Super C over Contra. I find the top screen levels far more fun than the lame base stages as those feel like some hold over idea for Metal gear that got dumped into Contra. The arsenal in Super C is far more functional than Contra. Spread the only good weapon in Contra, and it's still far less powerful than it is in Super C. The Fireball is borderline useless in Contra, while it's an all star weapon in Super C. It has parts it shines over spread, as it has greater range on the top screen levels, and can be used to counter the eggs on the last stage. Machine basiclaly fine , as it gives autofire options in both games. Laser still not great in either game, but it does high damage in Super C, and can be used defensively if you learn to control it's firing pattern. Ultimately the arsenal shines best with two players, where one uses the fireball and spread, making so you always have the best response to all situations.
