This game was legendary, one of the best on the NES, I spent months before finally beating it, this was a game that myself, my sister, and my mother all played together as we discovered the secrets, this is special to me. The soundtrack still in my head to this day, thank you for this awesome video and your channel, subscribed!

I remember that as a kid, I rented Startropic often. Oh boy can I tell how frustrated I was the first time I finally made it to the whale only to be stuck because I lacked that code. Tried calling the video store, friends, etc but to no avail. I even tried to learn english back then in case I had missed the code through interacting with one of the NPCs. Internet didn’t exist for us. So for years I left it unfinished until it occured to me that I could just try every single frequency until I hit the proper one and managed to finish Startropics for the first time. By far the worst thing I experienced on a NES game.

Totally unnecessary code. Like I know Nintendo didn't like game rentals, but this really feels like they went too far. You could buy the game and absent mindedly throw that paper away!

@@UCanBeatVideoGames I do feel like it's kind of a neat little interactive bit for the game, but I really wish they had included the code somewhere else as well, as the same damn thing happened to my family. The only difference here was that our local video store owner had an active subscription to Nintendo Power and looked it up for us.

I beat the game as a kid using the same method around 2001'ish. I got it in a stack of NES games and had to kinda guess the codes since I didn't have the letter.

Hey! StarTropics speedrunner here! Great guide! Just thought I'd pop in with some helpful info for the Mummu room that you said you hadn't been able to figure out yet. So the way it works is every Mummu *except* for the two that spawn at the bottom left and bottom right of the screen needs to be killed for the door to open. The two bottom ones can be left alone, so long as they don't get in your way. They usually end up forming a "conga line" though so killing them all tends to happen anyway. A good way to avoid those two is to go up upon entering the room and doing your best to keep track of two "duds" as best as you can while dispatching the others. Hard to do, even in a speedrun, so don't feel bad if you just end up having to kill them all.

I watched a speed run of star tropics recently, not sure how old it was. GDQ Maybe? Maybe you were a player or commentary? They talked about how nice and helpful the community was. If I can learn more about computers and streaming I'll have to check you all out. I just checked, it was SGDQ from 2017! Wow.

One nice trick in captain bells cave when in the room with the holes above where the wooden spikes, the rats can provide a clue as to safe areas to walk, they will not walk on a spot where you could fall through

I was never so happy as a child as when my mom kept the instructions and Dr Jones letter. When the game told me to put it in water for a secret code is a gift of a memory from my childhood.

It's true Zoda's Revenge was massively unappreciated. The game's music as a whole straight up slaps and to this day remains one of my favorites gameplay-wise and music-wise. I was fortunate enough to be old enough to play it for hours upon hours on end as a kid. With Indie devs and revivals abound I wouldn't be surprised if they remade it at some point or added onto the legacy. I'd be willing to pay for a team to do an overhaul of the first 2 games eventually.

I remember the rooms that go dark once you enter them. My mom would snap a quick picture on the polaroid camera which helped me navigate in the dark lol. I miss those days and my mom.

Ahh Startropics, some of the catchiest music (and lease sensical high score counters) on the entire NES. And our friends in Japan never really got to play it. And the chances of a third game in the series? I remain pessimisticola. I'll … see myself out.

I remember getting stuck after renting this game. The place in question was the spot where you stick in some sort of 3 lettered password. At the time no one had internet so I had to bet my uncle to use his copy of the game. At the time it was one of the very few games that had what the Japanese call an omaku(sp?) pack. Basically an extra pack. It consisted of a letter from your father that you run under water to reveal the code that you put in the game. I still remember it to this day I think, 747.

Same - I rented this game, and using the force of my full autism I brute forced the code. Started at 000, crossing each one off on a piece of paper... took me 747 tries xD

Sadly, the whole point of that code was because Nintendo was trying to kill the video game rental industry in the US. They got it illegalized in Japan, but they started adding blocks and dirty tricks to games that you needed the manuals for because they lost the lawsuit in the US. -- That's also why a bunch of our games are way harder.

My new personal favorite channel. Love these videos! This one was one of my favorites as a kid growing up and I had a hard childhood but I remember my favorite part was coming home from school and popping this game in to escape. Great to see Star Tropics getting some love.

I would have loved a more open ended adventure where you could sail around in your sub finding weird islands with fun towns or dungeons to explore

As a kid playing this game I could never get past the Parrot. So it's nice to see the rest of the game now. I was lucky enough to get the game new and had the paper with the secret code. That was so cool as a kid!

The parrot part was funny. It definitely looked like the bird was being inappropriate at first, but he was telling you the notes to play on the piano: do - re - me - fa(r) - so - la - ti - do. What he sang was the order to what you played. Still funny, but at least it makes sense. Love your content!!!

Star Tropics was a very impressive technical achievement for an NES game. The amount of colors, complex graphics, mechanics, and dialogue they squeezed into that little cartridge was amazing for the state of the technology they were using. I appreciate that the game starts off right out of the gate with cheesy humor. C island (in the sea, and shaped like a C). Really sets the expectations of the player for what they're getting into.

We'd take turns on the game; when one of us lost all our lives and had a game-over, the other person would have a go. We yelled so many f-bombs at the game. XD But when we finally, FINALLY beat this damn game, victory was so damn sweet.

When I was younger I would always get stuck at the Captain Bell piano puzzle. It wasn't until I was older and had a better understanding of music that I finally figured it out. (Do Re Me Fa So La Ti Do applies to the keys on the piano and what Peter says)

this was one of the greatest NES games ever made, even the sequel was pretty damn good despite the hate it gets. i really wish they'd bring it back and make a whole new game. there used to be a website dedicated to making a third installment though i think it's defunct by now.

This is one of my favorite games on the NES and in my top 5 for that system! I always thought they did an exceptional job on the pixel art and the music in this game and it's some of the best I've seen on the NES. I also loved the ending were you can talk to people and see all the effort you put in pay off! Many games just roll credits (usually after a cut scene after the final boss), but Star Tropics went further than that and it felt far more rewarding to finally finish a difficult game!

Yeah, I remember Nintendo Power really helping with the Ghost Tunnel. The room that looks like a dead end but you actually have to walk through the wall is very devious.

Here's an interesting tidbit. Like the bottle in the beginning, if you don't talk to Baboo and try to get the lighter, it WON'T be there. So they made sure the you had to converse with him to proceed. Also your Uncle was abducted so that he could translate the stuff on the meteor for the aliens. He says so himself.

These are amazing. I grew up with many of the games you feature and they defined my childhood. Now in my early 40s I have the will but not the time to replay them so perfectly with such "turn over every rock" detail that my inquisitive exploring nature would have me do. The Gauntlet start to finish showing every room video you did for example. Even using save states I still can't dedicate a weekdays worth of evenings. Now I can watch while still working my day computer job. Thank you for the A+ presentation.

My dad and I beat this game when I was 9 years old. No Internet guides, no tips from friends because no one had this game... Just our own metal. It's an accomplishment I wouldn't mind framing one day 😉

You make the BEST video game walkthroughs EVER! The map of the interior of the whale is COOL! I remember getting lost in there for hours, when I was younger. Seeing the map is so surreal! I almost just like watching your walkthroughs, even when I don't intend on playing the games haha Thank you for what you do! At 48:50 the bird's song has musical references to singing notes using a relative scale. The notes are Do (pronounced Dough) Re (Rey) Mi Fa So La and Ti. In a key of C, this would start a C and go along the white keys on a keyboard to a full octave, minus one. So when the bird says 'Do Me' it's more like "Do, Mi' or C E. Do Me So Far is Do Mi So Fa or C, E, G, F. This is how you're supposed to know which keys to press in the following keyboard puzzle. As a kid I was proud of the fact that, as Cap would say, "I understood that reference!" since I was taking choir at the time.

Thanks to this video, I have just finished Star Tropics! What an amazing but brutal game. I would have struggled with this even when I was a kid with lots of time and limited games. The ending is amazing... The screenshots give all the feels lol. Thanks again! My next one to finish will be Castlevania, but I am going to get Star Tropics 2, probably on Wii U virtual console if Nintendo persists in not bringing this to the Switch Online Service.

I love this game… Was playing it earlier tonight… When I was a kid, my folks would rent this game a lot and my best friend and I spent time playing it. We thought the part in the first village where you had to go talk to all the people was a little bit frustrating at first, but we would crack up because if you go and talk to the pig, it says oink oink and it’ll wiggle it rear end at you And this crack up…

First time I played this as a kid on nes didn't have the code... started from 000 and worked my way up... yes it took awhile but because of that I'll never forget the code for as long as I live

@@UCanBeatVideoGames The watermark code from the physical paper letter on NES was included in the digital instruction manuals (accessed by the console's menu options for a game) for the Wii Virtual Console and Wii U Virtual Console re-releases. It is also listed in the QR code website instruction manual for the NES Classic re-release. No option for the Switch Online re-released version unfortunately.

When I first got this game as a kid, I had an Uncle Steve who played video games too. I thought my uncle had put the letter in the box with the game, but fortunately my grandparents had more sense than I did

Dr Jones...some real Uncle of the year material there. He invites his teenager nephew he barely knows to come to an island who can't swim to use his sub and leaves him to make first contact with a potentially hostile alien ship with just a yoyo and kinda hopes for the best.

Great Gameplay and Walkthrough. You didn't show all the secrets, but you clearly didn't need them. ^^ Star Tropics is one of my NES-Favourites. 💖🏝 1:06:30 The stepladder from Zelda 1 would be very helpful here. :-D

Oh the nostalgia... of beating my head against a wall over this terribly cruel game. Even with Nintendo Power I could never get through the spaceship. If I did I probably wouldn't be living in a van down by the river. Damn you Zoda!

My brother and I played this game back in the day, it was really something. The movement alone making things rough but gosh, quite the story up there with the Final Fantasy games and a bit of Zelda.

Compared to its sequel, which gives you free movement (sometimes, too free), I kind of respect the grid system more than I thought I would.

I think the first time i ever saw anything from this game was in a shot from the remake of 'Homeward Bound'. The kids were playing this, but as is tradition, the sound effects were generic Atari beeps and the kids were slapping around the controller.

Man, this is lowkey one of my favorite games on the NES. It's a shame we never saw a part 3. I'm not as big a fan of Zoda's Revenge for... reasons, though those are mostly unrelated to gameplay. Love your attention to detail, both on this and on the various games you've covered in general. For example, on here I never knew you could actually skip the C Serpent fight. Anyway, looking forward to the sequel when you get to it! :D

Thanks!! I'm excited to do the sequel. I agree it's not as good as the original, but it's still a fun game. I really hope someone at Nintendo eventually reboots this franchise. I'd have LOVED to see a bigger better StarTropics on the SNES.
