Supercharged BMW E39 M5: How BAD is the DAMAGE: Plus hidden mods!
We finally got a chance to check out the damage properly up on stands on the Supercharged E39. We haven't had a car thats been this damaged before so we are a bit of a loss on what this would cost to repair. But after getting in touch with previous owner, we would really like to see this M5 back on the road.
Let us know what you think about it.

So many ways to look at this, and I suppose it comes down to your budget. As a long time E39 lover and owner the E39 M5 as we all know is the pinnacle of the 5 series throughout it's entire production run. Sometimes to save something lovely we need to think about it not in terms of the cost, but in terms of what we are saving and potentially what we would be losing. There are only limited numbers of E39 M5's remaining, and as time goes on, more will be parted out and scrapped. To that end, I feel it's worth saving every E39 M5 IF you are in a position to do so. I hope you find it in your hearts to bring this back to life and preserve it as the ultimate driving machine.

I’ve got a 420,000 mile supercharged E39 M5. The V3 supercharger unit is very loud, they sound like marbles which is completely normal. That tick you heard, sounded like an exhaust leak. Check the header flangers/bolts. On the S62, rod bearings are almost a non issue. If you wanted to do them, go ahead, but probably not needed. There’s a dipstick on the blower if you wanna check it out also.

Also no I don’t think it’s worth it, it’s crumpled in the back pretty good. It’ll never ride the same after an accident like that.

I've got an e39 m5 in australia, that took a similar hit (mine was parked and the driver was doing 80 kph), I would say that my damage was slightly less bad than yours, though also had a 2cm deviation on the drivers side. after they valued the car at 40k, the insurance company agreed to the repair, all in it cost them just over 28k$ (including everything - labour etc, restored fully to factory, Perth prices mind you). Bear in mind due to waiting on parts it took them around a year to get the car back to me, but drives like a dream now. With the way prices are going on them atm I would say fix it.

That's what we are thinking. We assume the motor, gearbox, diff, axles and suspension would all have to come out to straighten the body. And it would be the best opportunity to replace any common wear and tear items, like hart to get to gaskets/seals/ bearings etc.

Hopefully the chassis rails are okay, i used to work at a pannel beaters and this looks like maybe if you get a good pannel beater for cheap might be looking at 8-10k maybe even up to 15k. If they just reweld the boot rear quarter is a really tough one so lots of money for the quarter plus boot cutting and welding in a new piece. With the chassis straightening this is literally all of most expensive panel jobs all in one car, i wouldn't say it's a write off and is definitely fixable but it will be expensive but worth it in my opinion, most panel beaters will charge less for people that come in without insurance they will usually charge lower because insurance pays top dollar. I can definitely see why the insurance company wrote this off on if this came into my shop they'd take one look at that bend and instant write off. Good luck
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 года назад
I think you're right about the insurance thing. I'm also thinking that I could strip the car to try and save the time and even re-paint it myself. That way they only have to do the straightening and it might work out cheaper... maybe!

IF I'd have been in time and IF you guys would have listened to me (Which you most likely wouldn't have LOL) what you should have done or maybe I'll see you did do in the videos I'll be watching soon, is to tie a chain (Big) around the rear area that is needing to be pulled out from the impact Probably the bumper but tie it to the WHOLE bumper not the tow hook and then tie the other end around a power pole (Large wooden etc) then with gentle with skill and precision yank and pull the rear end out. Even give it a solid slam if needed. Just make sure you're doing it safely and don't stick your head out the window while doing it or you might hit your head on the window frame when the jerk comes. (Usually much harder than you think it will LOL). Rear door will open. The under side will have bolts that line up and the kinks that once were, will mo longer be. It works. Ask me how I know. LOL. And it's fun too.

Everyone cranks on about BMW engineering, and in general, it is very good, but they were completely stumped when it came to rod bearings. Pretty much every N/A ///M engine from S38B38 (1992) onwards had issues with them at some point. I replaced mine at 135k when installing the S/C and there were definite signs of wear. I think that replacing them is a smart move, and a whole lot cheaper in the long run. Apart from that though, the E39 M5 is incredibly reliable in my experience, the only thing I have needed to replace was the ABS module which is a known weak point. Thanks again for another great video guys, always love your vids but watching this one extra closely :) Sorry I can't advise about keeping the chassis or swapping drivetrain into another car.

David actually has a E39 LCI 535i with a blown motor already, this was originally purchased for the drive train to go in that car, but then you have that issue of ending the life of the M5, this one also turns out to have a pretty good all be it, fruitful history. Someone somewhere has pics of it on its roof at Lakeside around 8 years ago, apparently. haha. It's never going to be a museum piece or collector car, but it's still an M5. @@ZeroTo60Tube all of those good bits will still fit on a fresh shell too, I'm not saying it CAN'T be repaired, its just going to be really expensive/uneconomical fixing that shell, there's a lot of man hours in there as you have all the obvious areas to straighten/fix then the not so obvious like rear quarters/chassis rails etc, making sure its straight enough so all the doors open etc is the roof straight? it just looks like the sunroof isn't sitting flush?, where as if you put in a stripped donor shell next door to it then you both just start with swapping the full wiring harness over and piece by piece rebuild from there, leaving you with more cash for extra bits it might need like a respray/wrap to make it pretty mint. unless you can team up with a decent bodyshop that will reduce the cost of man hours by allowing filming to be done while it gets sorted to plug/promote their business, but then that would depend on things like subscriber counts/video views etc to whether they think its worth the cost to a possible return on investment of time of it bringing future customers if it gets seen by enough eyeballs.

Sorry dude. Had a few fuel system issues, if you have been following along. But have now unfortunately had to shut one of our business’s down. It will be a few weeks before I can get it on jack stands again and get them on.

If the titles already salvaged, I would strip this car. The shell wouldnt be worth fixing. If the title is still clean, I would maybe fix it, as some old M cars values have skyrocketed. Im cheap, probably go clean chassis gets the M parts swapped in.

Those old M car values are what makes it worth thinking about. It's not worth fixing now..... but in 10 years.... will it be one of those ahhh i wish i kept that car.

I own a 2000 Imola red M5 in Puerto Rico. You can find a lot of used M5 parts. In California, Ryan sales a lot of used e39 parts and even had a shell.

It has BC BR coilovers and looks like a relatively track focused alignment / setup. Looking forward to seeing how it handles!

Looking like a possibility. Someone sent a message saying they have repaired much worse, so it could be okay!

That’s not worth repairing. Swap the drivetrain into a touring. :D

The touring option probably makes the most sense. It would be something super rare, thats for sure.

@@ZeroTo60Tube I've been there before, I wish somebody was brutally honest to me back then. Find yourself an m5 with a popped motor. The setup you have is PERFECT for swapping into a stock M5 chassis

Or weld steel tube bumpers on and make it a drift car.

@@ZeroTo60Tube didn't mean to sound so cruel. I love those 5 series, especially the M's. It just looks too far gone, to me. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. I'll still be watching. 👍
