You can actually get much better efficiency when using impeller pumps (especially with the large one) on a smaller engine if you use a clutch to reduce the load the impeller places on the engine with a clutch. It also helps if your ECU can alter the amount of fuel the engine gets on the fly to regulate the Air-Fuel-Ratio (a must when using an impeller pump if you ask me) so that the RPS of the impeller and with it the amount of air the engine gets doesn't increase so fast that the engine begins to lean out when the RPS of the engine rises rapidly.

Could also use a dedicated generator with a clutch (clutch lets you adjust engine load), using that dedicated power to run an electric motor at a PID controlled RPS. All you then have to do is find out the minimum RPS needed for maximum air flow/pressure without wasting power. Along the engine power curve, there might different RPS/clutch settings needed but I havent gotten to testing that yet.

Just like in real life, when running boost on an engine it may struggle to keep the AFR up because it may be maxing out the fuel injectors. The solution to this is to add a better fuel pump or more fuel intake manifolds, and this applies to stormworks as well. If anyone wants to use the larger impeller or pump, you don't exactly need a larger engine-it really just depends on the quality of the fuel delivery system. When running smaller turbos with smaller engines, you can benefit from having an ecu that is preloaded with a turbo tune, such that it increases the fuel manifold throttle proportionate to the boost that may be generated by rpm, or manifold pressure. The upsides for this system is that it allows large boost on small engines, and steady control of the power the engine generates; the small impeller on the V8 was inconsistent-something that this setup may fix.

It should be noted that just adding a pump to the engine does not automatically make it more powerful and can actually cause the engine to not work at all because the afr may be too high. With all due respect to MrNJersey for what he has done to help others learn, That ecu is really outdated and overcomplicated. I have made several for my own builds that are more simple and work much better. So learning the process of getting the correct AFR is essential for anyone really looking into getting into modular engines. Something that I have found is that if you use composite nodes ch 1 and 2 from the engine for air and fuel, multiply it by the number of cylinders then by 60, you get the flow rate in L/S of fuel and air. That can be useful for determining afr in a larger scale. When you add a pump to the fuel and air, the fuel will be limited to the fuel manifold setting, but the air will be increased at any setting. So you need to increase the fuel manifold value to get the proper afr. Adding air pumps allows for a higher volume of fuel to be burned per cycle, so instead of maxing out at around 0.45 to 0.5 fuel manifold setting, you can usually get upwards of 0.6 fuel manifold setting before it becomes too rich. Small fluid pumps and one fuel and one air manifold works great for small engines, but 3x3s and 5x5s need much more air and fuel per cylinder per cycle, so one air manifold, one fuel manifold and a small pump per cyllinder is reccommended and can actually be mandatory with large engines. On 5x5s it may even require 2 per cyllinder.

First, before i start my "rant", i want to say that i really like your videos and especially your design constrains video. I fully agree on this topic with you. Torque doesn't mean torque in this game. There are multiple theories what it actually means and my take on it is that it represents the inertia mass of the pipe system. There is a theory that it displays the mechanical resistance, but that can't be true as flywheels will add a huge amount of "torque", but almost no resistance. There was a brief moment in the development process of modular engines where the devs tried to implement turbochargers and didn't quite succeed. They tried to make the impeller pump work like a turbine if fluid pressure was applied to them. I think they never got the balancing right, because they were afraid to implement yet another infinite engergy source into the game. I tried everything to make them work back then, but it was never possible with how they were implemented. Look at a cylinder of a supercharged engine. If the AFR is oscillating, then the intake pressure is not steady enough. The stoichiometric will be constantly over or under your desired value. The power output will fluctuate, which can make something like a traction control quite tricky. The small fluid pump (3x1x1) is not well suited to supercharge a modular engine as it will shut down at a pressure of 10. So, the pipe fills to a pressure of 10, a little bit supercharging happens and the pump turns off, the pressure drops immediately and the air intake is starved of air. Then the cycle starts again. Same is true for the large fluid pump, but it works better in this configuration as it turn off when it hits a pressure of 999. The small amount of air these tiny engines take is not enough to bring the pressure down to the maximum supercharge pressure (something around 100 or 200 pressure). But you will run into the same problem with larger engines if you don't use a bypass (variable fluid valve). The impellers don't work very well on this scale as they will need more rps and therefore more power of the engine as is shown in this video. Or else they will also create the afr oscillations. However, no matter the scale, large fluid pump(s) + bypass will allways outperform impellers in the usable power output and therefore also the fuel efficiency. It is just that the advantage gets smaller, the larger the engine becomes. What you completely missed is the air scoop. Facing into the direction of movement, it will create enough intake pressure at relative low speed to supercharge a modular engine. If you put a engine on a carousel, then it should be enough to see a noticeable power increase. They are small, easy, cheap and use no engine power for the supercharging.

This makes me want to experiment with a V12 engine and try to make the fastest possible supercar. There are some very impressive cars on the workshop but I don't know how many make full use of superchargers.

NICE bro i did a LOT of tests too HAHA heres some observations ! When boosting the engine, gotta change the AIR FUEL ratio ! never found 100% efficiency again while boosting but i found way more power out of large pump changing AFR !!

I havent played stormworks for a while but couldnt you get the flow rate of exhaust and use formulas to control a impeller pump to create similar power to a turbo?

You got Saabs in the US? They are awesome, swedish company, they make really great military hardware too. Generally swedish companies make impressive systems. There is a belt drive pump part in the game, I normally run coolant on it but maybe I should consider driving air with it instead and keeping coolant electrical instead so cooling effect isnt RPS dependent but constant

Just some useless input: "Prochargers" are actually called centrifugal superchargers -- ProCharger being a brand, and have different power output than a standard twin-scroll belt-driven supercharger irl -- Prochargers act more like a turbo (aka they produce more power within a certain RPM range, but still with linearity), superchargers produce more linearly (aka they produce power strictly according to the input RPM). Also, instead of using a standard fluid pump as an electrically-driven supercharger, you could theoretically use the impeller pump with a small electric motor, all hooked into an MC that increases the output of the motor as you need more power (or the engine spins faster). Would look cooler (and probably perform better) than the basic fluid pump. Something to try!
