I've never seen the 'skyhide' concept before. It's super-smart, especially for an arboreal snake. Also if they poop in their tank they don't have to sleep next to it.

I dig your videos. I’m using this video for some inspiration for my own super dwarf enclosure that I plan on building from scratch. I just got a female from ROR that looks just like Giles. Ha ha. She acts almost 100% arboreal. It’s awesome.

That enclosure is nicer than my apartment 👍 If I were a snake in my next life you would be in my top 5 of people I’d want to come live with for sure! What a long way the hobby has come since the mid to late 70s (in early 2000s when I had my last snake..a Miami phase corn)..so many options so many snakes so much more knowledge. I’ve never had the pleasure of sharing my home with a boa or python, always been a colubrid kinda gal but I’m really drawn towards these SD retics. Am now 67 and disabled not to mention my landlord would kick me out in a❤️beat if I had a snake. You take such wonderful care of your scale babies and am looking forward to seeing how they’re going to progress and grow over the years. ~Kim~😊😊

My first snake lived in an aquarium with a heat lamp On top and a bowl of water . This was 40 years ago . Times sure have changed!

@@bethleopard9034 Yes they sure have! I got my very first snake of my life at age 10. In 1964. He lived in a 10 gallon, just ambient household temperatures without A/C..was A/C only for the rich or???; don’t recall. He was a 2ft wild caught San Diego gopher snake that I named Ebeneezer. I fed him live mice from the pet shop. Ebeneezer was so mellow right from the start and never missed a meal. I had him for 2 years before I took him out for his Sun bath and he escaped. Don’t recall what I used for substrate I think it was hamster shavings and he had a water bowl and a small branch from the yard to climb on

The video I've been looking forward to! :D Beautiful setup and Giles looks so happy exploring (he's super adorable in general). How long do you expect him to be able to live comfortably in his current cage? Thanks for giving insight on the new enclosure, another great video of yours! Sidenote: your guide on snake-handling, where you showed how calm interacting noticeably also calms the snake down, helped me with my skittish retic baby. She had been pretty bitey when she arrived, which, since I'm still new and learning, at first made me in turn rather tense. But I remembered your video about calm handling and our interaction significantly improved. Thank you!

It’s hard to say, really. I would expect at least for this to last him another 2 years - at which point he’ll be 3.5 and should be getting close to his adult size. But that’s just a guess. Depending on how big he is I’ll probably want to move him into a 6 ft enclosure. If I have room for a 6x2x3 that would be awesome, I think. I’m so glad that video was able to help you! It’s hard to shake off the nerves but if we can it definitely improves the comfort level of the snake, in my experience

What is your routine for keeping the cage clean? I love having all the decor in an enclosure but I’ve found it gets in the way when they poop in it.
@Shellwe69

What size Ultratherm heat pads did you use? I read they can often be used WITHOUT a thermostat due to their low wattage density. Did you forego the use of a thermostat for the heat pads? Did you find they provided enough ambient heat for those nights it got chilly enough to use them since they are on the outside of the enclosure? Sorry about all the questions, but I want to upgrade my SD to something similar. Thanks so much!

Does a retic need low levels of night time heat when the flood light is off?
@GirlWithScalesOfficial
@GirlWithScalesOfficial 2 года назад
It depends on the ambient temperature. They can drop down to the low 70s - that happens in their natural range. However if it drops lower than that in their setup at night you will probably want a little bit of additional heat - that’s why I added those heat pads.
@4570sharps
@4570sharps 2 года назад
@@GirlWithScalesOfficial okay, I'm rewatching for heat pads. I guess it slipped by me.

By my rough runthrough this cage cost over a thousand dollars. Must be nice.
@GirlWithScalesOfficial
@GirlWithScalesOfficial 2 года назад
If you are buying all the items at once, possibly. Many of the elements I already owned from previous enclosure builds/gathering over time keeping reptiles. It can take me a while to save up for new cages but ultimately I do try to invest in quality products that I will be happy with for the longterm. Giles (who cost more than this cage, for the record) will be able to use this enclosure for years, and if/when he outgrows it, I will be able to use it for one of my smaller species for life. Additionally, by upgrading Giles to this cage, I was also able to upgrade a snake from a sterilite tub into Giles’ old enclosure and get additional value out of the investment.
@LetsTalkHerps
@LetsTalkHerps 2 года назад
I think my cheapest enclosure are a 20gallon I bought on sale with about $400 invested and a DIY tub that has about $500 worth of supplies and substrate and plants and additions. Providing proper husbandry for reptiles is not cheap.
@GirlWithScalesOfficial
@GirlWithScalesOfficial 2 года назад
@@LetsTalkHerps Exactly. By using a tub conversion kit or something of that nature you can save off a few hundred bucks - but you also add a lot of work for yourself as a trade-off. It’s still going to cost at least $300 if not more for lighting alone, plus all the cage furnishings - even if you go super cheap like just using basic plastic furnishings and a base substrate, it adds up. The good thing is that beyond the upfront cost, maintenance is very cheap generally for reptiles. But the upfront costs are for sure there.
