Ever wonder why you new dwarf or superdwarf reticulated python came with a percentage listed on it's label? Or perhaps you are planning a breeding project, and want to make high percentage animals in superdwarf, or some specific locality? How does that all work? Garrett Hartle breaks it down in this note worthy Free Tip Friday.
FTF or "Free Tip Friday" segments like this are designed to help you gain knowledge and understanding about how to, why, and what it is like keeping reptiles, and often specifically Superdwarf and Dwarf Reticulated Pythons, which we specialize in. This is an interactive segment, and if you would like us to share our views or information about a topic, let us know in the comment section!

Interesting! What is the price-range nowadays for a 100% Super Dwarf?
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 6 лет назад
Prices are continuing to climb. Locality cross animals are less (something like Madu/Kalatoa- still 100% SD) and are in the hundreds of dollars, but pure locality are pushing up into 4 figures now in most cases. Some localities remain unattainable at this point.
@IAMGiftbearer
@IAMGiftbearer 6 лет назад
That's interesting. Could you show some Madu/Kalatoa 100% ones in a video? I'm curious about what varieties of color and patterns they have and whether they stay as small as the pure locality ones. An in-depth feature on those Retics would be a really interesting topic to do a whole video on.

Nice. So a snake that is 25% Selayer dwarf and 37.5% Jampea dwarf would be considered 62.5% dwarf, but of different localities?
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
That is totally correct.
@davidcallahan4367

What are SD locality islands?
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 6 лет назад
Kalatoa are the only pure SD island locality available regularly right now in the US, but Madu and Karompas are the others, and hopefully we will begin to see them become available soon. There are also Kayuadis, but not everyone considers those Superdwarves- saying instead that they are dwarves. That is debatable- but they are a really cool locality either way.
@TheCharleseye

I'm very new to Retics. Is anyone working on finding more morphs in the dwarves and super dwarves, to keep from having to breed to larger retics?
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 6 лет назад
Finding them in the wild? Can't do that for several reasons. The first is, they are no longer imported to the US. The second is- the localities they come from are so small in most cases that it is very unlikely you will find new mutations among such limited gene pools. What we do instead (which is what I have devoted my professional career to), is utilized selective breeding practices to keep them small. There are several lines of different morphs that are now every bit as small as pure Superdwarves and Dwarves, with more being added as time goes by.
@TheCharleseye

Reach Out Reptiles Ah, okay. That makes sense. Like I said, I'm very new to retics, so when I started following your channel and hearing about dwarves/super dwarves, my head started swimming a bit. I love it that we have people like you in the reptile community, who are willing to do such a thorough job of helping the rest of us better ourselves in both the husbandry and business ends of things. Thanks a lot.

how many feet long is the biggest true super dwarft retic you have seen??
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
Define true Superdwarf. Do you mean pure from a certain locality? Biggest morph cross? Also, it's important to note different bloodlines have different sizes. Your family and mine might both be "true humanoids" but our families may vary greatly in terms of physical size and appearance. If there is a specific size animal you are looking for, be sure to get it from a breeder that has been working hard with that specific line, and knows the eventual size of the offspring. If you are shopping for animals simply labeled as "Superdwarf" from a bunch of lines, many breeders, from any classified you can find, you will never quite know what you are getting into. That would be like picking a dog from the pound, rather than a purebred breeder with very specific standards for their animals. Hope that somewhat complicated answer helps with a somewhat complicated question. You may also want to refer to our video "How Big DOES a Superdwarf Retic Get?

Awesome explanation Garrett! Something you said about SD being able to combine with D to count as D piqued my interest. Using the Anery Tiger girl I got from you as an example, she is 25% Jampea (D) and 25% Kalatoa (SD). Based on your logic, it would then be kosher to consider her a dwarf because SD can combine into the D percentage to raise it to 50%? Is that basically what you're saying? And does that pseudo-percentage carry through if we breed her in the future, or is it strictly from that point based on her actual percentages of D and SD as calculated against the new sire?
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 6 лет назад
Correct- she would be considered a dwarf. But keep track of her bloodlines, and use them to calculate your babies in the future, because depending on your breeding selections, she could produce SD babies for you, when bred to anything 75% SD or higher...
@DrewJaynes
@DrewJaynes 6 лет назад
Right. So if we bred her brother against the 75% Kalatoa we could yield 50% superdwarfs and 18.75% dwarfs (12.5 + 25 Jampea).
@MrSf49ers
@MrSf49ers 6 лет назад
So I have Rc pastel 100% het vpi T positive male an female.. if they bred all the babies would be Vpi? An possible vpi albino? The morph math is very interesting to me. Thanks :)
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 6 лет назад
You are looking at the wrong video- this one is regarding the localities, not morphs. You are going to want to watch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wznGCOuCoAY.html. That video is specifically discussing python genetics, not boas- but they work the same way. But to answer your specific question, breeding a het x het gives you 1 in 4 babies of the T+, the rest will be possible hets.

So 50% + 50% = 100% divided by 2 = 50 again… this seems like a stalemate… how does one increase the percentage with a male and a female that are both 50%…???
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 3 года назад
The only way to increase SD/D percentage is to go higher than 50% for at least one of the animals in the breeding. i.e. 100% + 50% = 150% divide by 2 equals 75% or 75% + 50% =125% divide by 2 equals 62.5% and so on.
