The Red Kryptonite not only robbed Linda of all her memory of being Supergirl, it also caused her wig to remain stuck to her head. It didn't rob her of her super strength, however. Since she didn't remember she had it, she didn't use it. When she used it accidentally, it restored her memory and she was able to remove her wig easily since she now knew she had super strength.

Jimmy and supergirl is not bonkers at all. Lois and Jimmy is so strange. There was a song about jimmy that he secretly loved lois and I don't know where that came from. I never read the jimmy marries lois book though. So I don't know his thoughts on her. Jimmy and supergirl is just a mild whatever.

Back in the 1970's, when "The Superman Family" was transitioning to the Dollar Book Format, the comic was slated to be edited by Tony Isabella. His big idea for Supergirl, was to get her into a hot and heavy relationship with Jimmy Olsen (then in his "Mister Action" phase). Apparently she was gonna clue Jimmy in on her secret identity and the hook up would then be used to create some tension between Kal El and Kara and then between Jimmy and Lois Lane. Isabella ultimately parted with DC Comics before the idea could be implemented, but it had some intriguing aspects since it was gonna be such a conflict generator.

From what I remember of the Silver Age Supergirl stories I've read, each individual piece of red kryptonite can only affect an individual kryptonian once (hence why Superman was immune to it, having previously encountered it before handing it off to Jimmy). I *think* that each individual piece has an effectively random effect (ie, whatever that story's plot needs), but each piece has the same effect on each kryptonian exposed to it. Also IIRC the effect of each piece of red kryptonite lasts a consistent 24 hours.

I was glad you brought up the amnesia/wig thing because it was driving me crazy. If I recall my silver age correctly (it has been a few years :-D ) a piece of red kryptonite could only affect a given Kryptonian once, then that particular Kryptonian became immune to that particular piece, which explains why it didn’t affect Clark. Now, what happens if you split the piece? Would it become a “new” one? I dunno. Doesn’t really make much sense, but hey, silver age. Also, red kryptonite affects were usually only temporary, so the amnesia wearing off is to be expected.

Oh good, someone did mention it. Also each piece has a different effect from others. Sometimes it was a physical mutation and sometimes it affected their personality. Red K must be more unstable than the usual green so in the Silver Age it does whatever the writer wants to do to mess with Superman and Supergirl.

That's why I tell people to read certain issues of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen before reading Justice League: The Nail, because without context certain big reveals become weird and seemingly come from nowhere.

Given the way Lucy treats Jimmy in this period any decent romance would be cheered on by his fans. There's also a story where someone tries to give Jimmy a better girlfriend by making a robot and I'm pretty sure the girls of the Legion Of Super Heroes got involved at one point because of course Silver Age Jimmy hung out with the Legion as well as Darkseid.

Most of these Imaginary Stories from the Silver Age had bad endings, like they wanted it to be a morality tale about why the Status Quo shouldn't change. This is the only one that has a happy ending, like it someone actually got their Jimmy/Supergirl fanfiction published.

A piece of red kryptonite only affects a Kryptonian once and then it wears off. After that, the same piece of kryptonite will not affect them, but it will affect another Kryptonian. Superman was already affected by that piece so he's immune to it.

I feel like this plot got sort of recycled in Futurama. Bender pretending to be Flexo to catch his girlfriend cheating on him with himself. Even that plot made more sense than this... Yet another Silver Age relationship with a foundation of lies upon lies!
