Every single Sonoff model has used the Espressif ESP8266 / ESP8285 processor - until now.
But now ITEAD has gone in a different direction, and released the Sonoff BasicZBR3 which drops WiFi entirely in favour of Zigbee. It doesn't even use an Espressif processor: instead it uses a Texas Instruments CC2530, which is based on the 40-year-old Intel 8051 processor architecture.
What is Zigbee, and how does it compare to WiFi? Is the Sonoff BasicZBR3 any good?
Let's find out!

This video is amazing mate. This will solve a problem I could see cropping up when I install zigbee sensors in my shed at the bottom of the garden. The sonoff basic will also have a use between my home assistant server and my garden so it's a win win

Great vid. Not sure I will ever want to use Alexa, Siri, or Google voice commands. Bit more disillusioned by the lack of data integrity of companies atm. Simply put .... bad enough they track my laptop activity .... they don't need to track my internal household activity. I like these videos where you probe and "track" what stuff is on the boards. By all means do more!

Welcome to the Zigbee Dark side. :-) I am a big fan of Zigbee. I run a couple of ConBee II USB sticks with deconz and even have a Xiaomi Mi Gateway. Zigbee is so much nicer than wifi for these kinds of purposes. Most people flood cheap wifi routers with so many devices they can't connect their laptop or phone. Zigbee takes away that problem with most hubs being able to handle at least 50 devices before you start needing to add routers. And deconz lets you manage and maintain the network wonderfully easily.

@SuperHouseTV Do you know if this supports "PowerState 2" like Tasmota Firmeware on a Sonoff. PowerState 2: Toggle opposite of last state when power is cut. I'm using wall switches (buttons) to cut power and when light is turned on and i push the button the light turns off and vice versa. If this Zigbee Sonoff does support that I'll swap out all of my "old" Wifi based sonoffs.

Hello. Beside switch S1 there are two LEDs. Can you check which pins on the 2530 are driving the LEDs? I didn't see any transistors nearby, so i am assuming they're between a pin and a rail? (I forget if the 2530 can sink more or src more current :) )
@EsotericArctos

The great thing about ZigBee devices is they don't need firmware changing. All you need is a local co-ordinator instead of an Amazon or other cloud based one. Home Assistant and OpenHab work brilliantly with zwave co-ordinators like the xbee USB stick, Elelabs ZigBee co-ordinators, conbee and conbee2 plus any number of diy solutions based on reprogrammed CC253x ZigBee sniffers. These CC253x devices are so cheap. Under $20 will get you the USB device and the programmer. That's a cheap and reliable ZigBee co-ordinator for your Home Assistant or OpenHab box. Additionally some hubs, like the Hue bridge, can also work totally local.

I've just bought some of these. Very reasonable price on Amazon. This video saved me a lot of time, thanks. :) I've used Zigbee for sometime although some devices don't always seem to play nice - e.g. considering the mesh network (that I can visualise using phoscon with Conbee II) I don't know why some Innr plugs sometimes lose connection and don't reconnect by themselves for ages when they're near other Zigbee routers. [If I was interested enough I know I could use make some kind of signal sniffer - maybe just using a zigbee endpoint - but I honestly have too many priorities and just want stuff that works). My best guess is too much interference on 2.4GHz ... I have a lot of gear on those frequencies and so placement can make a lot of difference (and of course turning down loud sources). Still. It's annoying. I really liked Wireless Things stuff that ran on 868MHz (for me in the UK). Less interference and more penetration/reach. Nb - running Conbee II Phoscon stuff in Docker ... but I use a MacVLAN connection rather than host (bridging's not always recommended for broadcasts etc.) (I use VLANs and this runs on Debian on a J5005 nuc) so I can put it on the VLAN I have my Echo's etc. on so that discovery works properly for the Conbee II gateway while still isolating from other stuff e.g. my plex server in another container runs on the VLAN my Desktop's connect to - to avoid excessive routing (handy to know). If using multiple interfaces & gateways even on Debian that involves a bit of manual routing ... but with the MacVLANs the host doesn't need to "know" they exist per se. (Individual containers - not swarm or anything). But something that's always frustrating me (one of many tech non-available's I'm always lamenting) is a simple/cheap READY-MADE 12V (etc.) version of this Sonoff BasicZBR3. (Manufacturer agnostic). I'll have to do another search soon. Wouldn't it be great to have an inline USB one? So much of my stuff is USB. Maybe with power sensing readings too. And, golly, I dare imagine Lithium Iron Phosphate powerbanks with zigbee control, reporting, and discharge/charge programmable thresholds to do partial C charging etc. to use as UPS's. I've waited decades for that sort of thing. Never had time + money + opportunity + skill lol to do it myself. Not quite. Partially completed attempts. I want to buy stuff I can plug in / wire-up simply, as a switch, and use. Not something I have hack a bit first. I seem to waste a lot of time doing stuff like that. It's very distracting. I want to get on with software, not hacking hardware. It's 2020 already. Will the devices I want ever be available? Those things I mentioned are just the start of all the missing kit. We only seem to be allowed to buy things with very constrained use cases that don't overlap well and possessed of multiple failure modes. :( And that eat electricity like there's no tomorrow. No sophistication. Rant over lol. But the video was very good. Very helpful. :)

OK - I faffed about with this. Removed the Live/hot - fuse, varistor, and bridge rectifier for good measure, all with pliers (just pulled off). And used some depont wire (trimmed) to connect the (L) to the 5V test point (connects to the thingy capacitor), and (N) to any old ground (shorter wire on t'other end). Then I used a simple USB inline switch from Amazon (pack of 3), tore out the switch bit (too hard to open) (well - tore out the wires) just so I could use the USB plug / socket flying bits. And connected them to the screw terminals on the Sonoff, and used a bit of bluetack as the wire was a bit thin for the cable gripper thingy. *Sigh*. Why I have to do all this I don't know. Why can't I just buy it!!!!! Why can't people sell this stuff?!!! I looked-up the datasheet for the relay on mine ... a 5V one obviously (as I'm feeding 5V though I could add a buck step down thing if I wanted a more variable input) and it said 0.45W for energised state. I think. From memory - that was yesterday. Plugged it all in and worked. I measured 32mA ish for relay off, and 140mA ish for relay on. Don't know if that helps anybody. Let's hope Sonoff sell something like that one day. They do an inline USB WiFi one now so maybe a Zigbee one is in the works.
@davidbayliss3789
@davidbayliss3789 4 года назад
NB - obviously a MOSFET instead of a relay might be better for my USB inline solution ... but I'll look at that another day as I'd quite like to still fit in the case (with lots of labels indicating 5V input only!).

loving your work btw. as a developer, i only harbor great dissapointment with zigbee, when i wanted to develop for it, zigbee asserted open source, finding documentation on it was impossible, but for a low low fee of $2000 you were allowed their documentation(albeit 5 years old), if you wanted a more current documentation you could pay $30,000. Otherwise i would have developed / utilised this tech, but the lies(open source) left an awful taste in my mouth.

I would like to know how this device works in case of powercycle. I want to place it between a regular wall switch and a ceiling light without a neutral wire. So when the wall switch is turned off the Sonoff device will also turn off. But what happens when power is turned on. Will then: - the previous state be restored - the bulbs be turned on by default - the bulbs be turned off by default

Good video. I suspect 99% of the people using this would use the Zstack code from TI, which basically has all the heavy lifting of the zigbee stack included. All you'd need to do is add the endpoint for the relay control, and chances are it is already in the example code somewhere. Also, for the range test -- Zigbee is not like WiFi in terms of the sensitivity. It is quite possible the end device in your test could reach your coordinator directly. Lastly, there are ways to map out the zigbee network. I use zigbee2mqtt as my gateway, and have an XBee in the mesh which allows me to map out the network anytime. It also acts like a router, which I should probably undo...
@SuperHouseTV
@SuperHouseTV 4 года назад
The Hue light definitely couldn't connect directly: it only barely connected to the Sonoff, which was about half way between it and the Echo. I spent about half an hour moving it around trying to find a spot where it was visible to the camera and could still connect. I have a bunch of XBee modules too and I'm going to show both zigbee2mqtt and tasmota2zigbee in future vids.

I have one question... Zigbee waves travel in one perticular direction or its like WiFi waves in all directions.. I have zigbee hub which is connected to zigbee repeater and this repeater connected to other few end zigbee devices... When i kept zigbbee hub antenaa direction toward zigbee router then it picks signal and then this zigbee repeater antenna face toward other few end zigbee devices... Then communication is perfect and has no problem.... But if i change the one of the hub or repeater antenaa direction to opposite side...then all my end zigbee devices lost its connections.... So my question is.... Zigbee is work in a straight direction ? Or it is like WiFi waves in all directions?

The vias that are bonding the ground planes together aren't vertically blocking RF. The wavelength at 2.4 GHz is about 12 cm, or 120 x the thickness of the circuit board, and RF at that frequency doesn't even see the sides of the board as two separate things. The ground plane vias do prevent the parts of the board that aren't supposed to from becoming an antenna, but that many, that close together isn't necessary for RF at 2.4 GHz, and is usually done for heat dissipation.

@SuperHouseTV
@SuperHouseTV 4 года назад
Sure can. In this case I was using an Amazon Echo Plus, so I can rename the devices through the Alexa app. With other gateways they'll have their own way of doing it.

It can be as low as 0.001mA. Maybe you can have a battery powered zigbee device for a few years if you poll every 5 seconds. That could be kinda interesting, but it's connected to a continuous power supply and it doesn't go into sleep mode so the power won't be particularly low. It needs to stay awake to act as a Zigbee Router.

In my professional opinion, these ZigBee devices are low power and ideal for control, however distance between mesh nodes are worse than Bluetooth. I've had problems in open air at 10 metres.
