People ripping on the special effects on a film that is 40 years old? It’s evolution in film making. At the time in 1978, special effects were all practically done with pre and post In-camera effects and editing. There wasn’t any CGI. This film and Star Wars were one of the first few films to utilise the green screen technology extensively to project an image with the subject/person in the forefront to create the illusion of flight or whatever. It’s a technique that is still used as a normal practice in every single SFX films today, but enhanced by the advancements in CGI. It’s the ingenuity in coming up with these film techniques by the film makers that needs to be recognised and appreciated. It seems to be completely taken for granted by some people.

@BigMac8000 11 месяцев назад
@@srikanthsv79 0:26. Zod's about to throw part of a building at Clark. Clark could ignore this and tackle Zod's flanking soldiers head on, or go straight for Zod. Instead he looks down and assesses the collateral damage. He realizes the people below barely even have a concept of what's going on up here. Assessing this when Zod throws the building Clark chooses to use heat vision - this means only dust and light rubble hit the streets and are barely disturbed, but they become alarmed at the concept of falling rubble. This is entirely built into the narrative and is hammered home repeatedly, it's not random. Additionally this is reflected in the cinematography and in subliminal messaging. This is a common thing for 70's era filmmaking, notably stanley kubrick, and is absolutely by design. Zod and his soldiers always choose the high ground against Clark but this is just posturing. It provides no advantage, gravity assist isn't going to change the outcome of any of their fights - but they choose to do this because they look down on Clark. They want to disparage him into hopelessness but worse, they want to subjugate him. They say they want to kill him but in reality, they just desperately want to be right. This makes them all look like idiots because essentially, they are. But the real subliminal is in all the shots with Clark. By putting them "above" him, it means every shot of Clark shows the streets below and shows you his thought process. He doesn't have his head in the clouds, he's worried about the potential fallout - every minute, every swing he's concerning himself with the people in danger below and the shot work suggests that. This also subliminally suggests that he's on the human's side because it's reflected in the cinematography. It isn't just Zod and his soldiers VS. Superman, it's Superman and humanity against Zod and his friends. Superman and Zod's group all have x-ray vision, super hearing and the vantage point. What we're seeing as viewers is human's reacting to the situation but bear in mind - they're all seeing those human's react. The humans in these scenes are influencing the battle completely but are also completely unaware of it - they can barely see what's happening and yet they are the focal point. The entire fight rests with them. Clark's just trying to buy time - he knows he can't win because killing Zod isn't winning. As long as nobody has been hurt, Clark will play with these guys all day but only as far as he can get ahead of the individual threats. This creates a lot more tension not just because it's happening - but because the filmmakers chose to make such a stance. Upholding morality in narrative is a valuable thing, this tension can't be understated. Admittedly the special effects ruin much of that tension, people look VERY goofy in this movie, but for me - I don't care, it's not a high priority. For others it would be but for me, what matters is the filmmakers taking a stance on the morality issues and getting to the core of Clark's character - which is an attempt about being a super moral person. Compare this to its direct modern iteration Man of Steel - that fight, while truly grand spectacle, Clark utterly ignores the ramifications of the battle and shows absolutely no direct concern for human life. He celebrates after the battle with Lois despite the fact that Metropolis is crumbling behind him. That tone deafness rings so hard. This is confirmed in Batman Vs. Superman as we see casualties mounting up. One might offset all this with the idea that Krypton's people could be revived, or that Superman actually cares enough about Zod to put human's at risk - but instead humans die, krypton is destroyed and Zod is murdered by Clark in a last minute attempt to correct the scales. Anyone can appreciate the aesthetic differences between the two films. The acting is largely the same, both films have great actors putting in 100% and playing out what their lines and characters dictate and putting the spin on them. But the story suffers a great deal when you divorce Clark from his humanity. Notably in Man of Steel Clark has very few lines compared to Superman II - because they're afraid to let him even speak. In the 70's superman was still considered a "for kids only" affair, it was a major industry but not a world churning mega block buster franchise. Today Superman's so valuable he is barely allowed lines that aren't carefully curated by dozens of corporations producing content for him - and in such they tend to "forget" all his humanity in lieu of a caricature. One important aspect of this scene is that while we as viewers are at a distance, Superman can "hear" everything going on - we're seeing his perspective always. Every screaming mother, every shoulder-shrugging construction worker, every guy saying, "Go get em' Superman" is ringing in his ears. In Man of Steel they show Clark has the same issue - he can hear and see everything, yet he seems totally ignorant of the calamity happening around him. You as a viewer can't enjoy Superman's triumph because deep down, you have to willfully ignore the catastrophic loss of life that's being caused in the same way. You have to accept that Superman is either totally ignorant or completely careless about the collapsing city around him. Here it's so in display - Clark's completely ignoring the Kryptonians and tanking all kinds of hits... but when collateral damage is about to happen, Clark goes from placating to sharp as can be. He doesn't even want to hurt the Kryptonians until it matters to do so. This morality on display is a joy to watch, even if the wirework of these people flying is comically terrible. I'll take dated special effects over terrifying moral choices. Having said all that I do like Man of Steel, the first 2/3 of that movie are really excellent and I'm a huge fan of Henry Cavil - it's just terrifying what they chose to display in that film. There's a moral bankruptcy on display that comes sometimes with Snyder movies that hurts them deeply - despite Snyder's undeniable talents, the man can make a beautiful image. These could be solved by edits, rewrites or simply removing some kind of negative influence but... This is possibly more of a studio problem than a directorial one, but it's interesting that both the Snyder cut and Donner cut suffered under the same problems. And it's this moral battle that's at the center of it. It's what makes a movie grand, which is saying something more than a story for entertainment. It's taking a stance on an important issue and for this one - it's the actual experience of caring about other people. Watching Christopher Reeves react with fear, joy, elation and despair... that's important. Compare that to Clark destroying a big rig passive aggressively and quits a job mid-shift... it's a big difference. It's much harder to relate to a character that would do that.

Bear in mind this whole fight is on top of buildings. They can barely see anything, let alone hear the dialogue. That's the funny part about this whole scene - it's like watching ants fire lasers at each others a half mile up. Even the accidents are like, "Oh wait, is that a crane coming?" These people didn't see what happened in the daily planet, they didn't have time to process anything at all. I think Zod took over the white house at this point but that's still news you'd have to hear on a street corner. Telephones are wired to walls in this era, no cell phones - and if you're a working man you don't get to read the paper midday. Someone yells, "Superman" and they all look up and go, "Oh, he's fighting someone on a building? I think I heard about this on the news, something about kryptonians in the white house?" And then it's just a lot of yelling and speck fighting speck up on top of some buildings, until a crane falls on your head. This dude was probably working all day and since he works in construction, he likely sees superman twice a month. Bein' a working man you miss a lot :D
@BigMac8000
@BigMac8000 11 месяцев назад
Also I wanted to mention something else that's really subtle. Superman's "Blue" outfit is often a reference to blue collar workers. There's a commentary in this film about such things. Construction workers risk mechanical injury every day to build this city, his fear response to rubble is going to be less and instead he's gonna relax, focus and pay attention. This isn't random, it's by design. 70's filmmaking is intense man, they love those subliminals.

If I was good at editing I'd find a way to mix in the fights from the Donner cut and this one. And hopefully it would look a bit more drawn out. I like the punch from superman better than that flying kick. It made more sense than ursa trying to whack superman over the head with a flagpole while non or whatever his name is holding him down. Let's say superman didn't duck and he got hit with the pole, it still would have hit the other guy anyway, at least I think it would anyway. By the way I love this movie. I grew up watching it. I want both versions: the one (TV) where the lady says "The big one is just as strong as Superman!" with Lois shoving her, and the scene (Theatrical?) where Superman is hit into Liberty's torch.

This movie is not cheese and man of steel is also a MASTERPIECE .This movie is iconic , classic and refreshing and a True MASTERPIECE ! Don't compare movies to the classics like...an of steel is the best superman movie excluding Christopher Reeves Superman movies because Christopher Reeves superman movies are the best overall so to reference newer things, just talk about everything except those classics
