I saw this in the theaters with my dad . When the cab drivers says "this is gonna be good." My dad laughed hysterically... I'll never forget that memory .. miss u dad ...
I had the privilege of seeing this movie as my first time in a Cinema. Unforgettable experience, I could not stop talking about it for weeks and I'm still reading Superman comics today. Thank you, Mister Reeve you're the best Superman we could ever hope for.
He was the best Superman they could find back then. Nobody else could do what he could. His charm, his friendliness and last but not least his determination to do the right thing made him Superman. Christopher Reeves was Superman.🌹
@@ogg-men Yes. Superman - The Movie is a Masterpiece. The second movie is not bad. But they haven't made it more about the characters and the story. Superman 3 is more comedy show than superhero movie. But it's still better than Man of Steel😏. The last movie with Christopher Reeve as Superman is very bad written by the people who don't see the first movie. Even the best director of the World couldn't save this movie. Unfortunately.😒
@@289cobra9 Superman 2 is not bad but the first movie is for me without flaws. Superman 3 is mediocre. Too much slapstick. Superman 4 is not good for everyone who knows the first movie. I like the old superhero movies but not all are so well.✌
Superman 2 was considered the best comic book movie for decades. It was truly magical as a kid in the 80's. It wasn't until the 2000's with movies like Spiderman 2, the dark Knight trilogy,Ironman and the Avengers that Superman 2 was thoroughly surpassed. There still has never been a better Superman movie than part 2.
Definitely not surpassed. Just uniquely good but not better. Superman 1 and 2 are the reason you have the Spider-Man, avengers, Ironman etc movies. After 1978 Superman was released it became known how deeply this genre can affect people and how much positive influences it can have. I know because I was a little boy when they came out and they inspired me on so many levels
@The Anthropologist _Forensic Donner did many takes, he just wanted to change it up for his cut. If he were doing the original, he would've picked "Would you care to step outside?" also.
Man of steel solos 😂 this Superman vs zod fight is a joke 💩💩 in man of steel they showcased Superman and zod potential by them not holding back and going all out
@@The_Goat_24 yes but in Man of Steel all you see is a bunch of blurs moving fast across the screen. In Man of Steel there's no soul, there's no magic and it's very quickly forgettable. Reeve's Superman captured the imagination of many generations and was a movie the whole family could watch together. Not to mention the epic Superman theme which in my opinion is the most inspirational pieces of music ever composed. What memorable music does Man of Steel have? That's right, none😁
@@felixthecat9145dude you just straight hating man of steels soundtrack alone is better than 90% soundtracks of modern day films I respect the og Superman but let’s be real man of steel is way better get with the times
I just love how at Zod picks up a giant concrete wall to hurl at Superman and when Superman looks around to see if there are people in danger there's a construction worker chillin against a construction sign like he's watching a street performance at 1:31 😂
Love the bit where Superman relfects Zod's laser back at him using the trucks wing mirror - that's what made him so Super. He was smart. Not just a man with 'super' powers. 😉
tbh I miss those scenes. too much cgi nowadays. some scenes are not even real. The old days real people were doing those scenes themselves. I grew up in the 80s, so yes those scenes were epic for their times.
Bruh when I was a kid I used to hear that the actors were "attached by a wire" for the flying scenes. Me being a kid, I genuinely thought that they had the actors flying by hanging them from a flying helicooter via an invisible wire. Like, i really believed that they were out there flying 2500 feet in the air lol
Considering the limitations of the times, they did a pretty good job doing this battle. It goes to show that super special effects like Justice Leauge don't matter if the feelings for the characters aren't there.
I remember a line in a Superman comic, where a female bank robber says "You wouldn't hit a lady would you?" Superman replies "No." then backhands her, commenting that "I wouldn't call a woman wearing a bomb vest rigged to blow a lady either."
It's may just a tradition. There were, I guess, 4 actors from superman movies in Smallville. (Annette O'Toole Martha/'78 Lana, Chris Reeve Prof. Swan/'78 Superman, Margo Kidder ?/'78 Lois and Terence Stamp Jor El/'78 Zod.
Mekrab J the subtle nods to Superman’s humanity like when he looks down before the fight begins to survey where civilians are is incredibly moving. It makes you realize with all the powerful effects of man of steel, the missing elements of the characters heroism made it all pointless
At the moment I am watching Superman 2 on blu ray and enjoying every minute of it. I remember leaving the cinema when I saw it with a huge smile on my face. It was brilliant. Christopher Reeve just brilliant as Superman and Clark.
I loved superman 2 as a kid i thought it was the coolest thing ever and this is my favorite scene i still think it's awesome and Christopher Reeve will always be the best superman RIP
Because the other dude was just floating like "Woohoo superman, I can fly!" and the superman is just like, *BAM BOI* and smacks his face which sends him soaring.
This whole fight was hilarious. The ending when Zod was hitting the truck with his lasers and Superman swooped down looked and tore off the mirror and stopped him I fucking died laughing 😂😂😂 this shit is awful
I love the way 80's Hollywood cameras looked. The dynamic range (color, basically) looks so incredibly good. This movie, Indiana Jones, Empire Strikes Back, etc. all look so beautiful in the way they display color, light, and shadow.
Zod: This, Superman is nothing of the kind? I discovered his weakness. He cares. He cares for these earth creatures. Ursa: Like pets? Zod: I suppose so? Lol!😄 I always loved that moment.
Christopher Reeve will always be the best Superman, this movie meant so much to me as a young boy, my mom even sewed a special cape for me, I miss you and love you Mom
Cavill's Superman is a brooding mess who doesn't want to be superman unless his girlfriend's in trouble. But that's not Cavill's fault, it's WB Studio.
I love when lex is like " Superman thank God" 😂 lol.. like please get rid of these 3. Lex knew eventually they would have killed him, but Kal doesn't kill. He was relieved 😅🦸♂️👍🏻 great fight scene thou....
It is still the benchmark for all superheroes movies. I hope that someday someone else will try to create a superhero movie with no CGI. This one had none, and I think that's a mark of honour.
Michael Shannon was a great General Zod, but this guy was just menacing to me back when I watched this as a child… As comical as it is to me now, he still is a great Zod… Both actors did a great job with the character…
Feysal Fuad that and the dick head on the roller skates and the guy with the wig where his wife says "omh my hair" and he responds with "your hair what about mine?"
I always wondered why he sounded so excited when there was a good chance he could have been killed with the fallout from the Kryptonians battling over his city.
Zack Snyder was so preoccupied with portraying Superman as a Christ-like figure that he overlooked the essence of the character. Consequently, this has led to a plethora of mixed opinions. Henry Cavill could still portray Superman, and the DC Universe wouldn’t need a reset if they simply adopted a comic book script and allowed Zack to direct only the fight scenes.
That's not the way the line originally sounded. For some reason, there are parts that were changed from the Lester cut for no reason, as this is Lester footage and Reeve didn't sound like he had sucked helium in the Lester cut.
@@axebomber2108 - its changed because this is the Donner Cut. Donner used every bit of alternative footage and takes that existed to make this version even the ones he had no intention of putting in the final film had he been allowed to finish. Why? Because its supposed to be different to the original cut
Still my one of my favorite movies of all time and Christopher Reeves will always be my favorite person to play the Man of Steel 💯💯💯. I miss the yellow symbol on the back of his cap as well nowadays.
Superman and Superman 2 set the standard for superhero movies. This showdown is so epic. Great music, villains, Superman, etc. The fact that they set up Superman 2 in the beginning of 1 as if this would be the true test for Superman with his fathers enemy was great too. It just has a sense of awe and wonder that modern films don't have. And Superman crushing Zod"s hand at the end doesn't get any better.
That first shot of superman outside the window is epic, looks like it’s ripped straight from the comic book,…. Can be a poster or on a shirt….. respect to the director
Dammn, watching i can say how masterpiece man of steel was still this is a good classic film.. considering the time it was filmed and all it is an exceptional work.
I think you can enjoy both without having to feel like your betraying either version. They both have incredible casts, and their legacy will endure for generations to come.
Brilliant effects and performances. I think some people who see this for the first time forget that there was no CGI back then. They actually invented many things to make these effects in Superman I, especially to film the flying scenes and in many others like the Krypton scenes/world.
Believe me...At the time? In the cinemas? This was HUGE!!! Somehow..it's still gives me the goosebumps...)). Classic!!!! Rip Christopher Reeve!!! The Original Superman!!!!
The simplicity, though caused by a lack of VFX, makes us appreciate the smaller details. Notice the beauty of their flight. Though primitive, you can appreciate their ability to fly. Every takeoff feels like an event. Flying through the city makes them feel small. Not as if the bricks will crumble to their touch or that a super fart will blow the world away. We've lost this in modern cinema. Being able to recreate the world doesn't mean we should. Using a mix of practical sand digital effects is a method I hope we use more in the future
@@enigmawstudios4130 I take that as a "no." Every time they super impose a shot of an actor on screen to make them look like they are flying that is VFX.
@@captainjefferies9047 didn't know we were going into smart-ass territory. Not all of those shots are superimposed. And there's a clear difference between full on CGI in MOS and practical use of special effects used in this film. But if you're just trying to feel like a big boy, be my guest and argue on
Just the background score mkes me have goosebumps, icnic score still very fresh in mind as a kid i had broken my hand trying to emulate Superman crazy time. Always will love this movie.
The taxi driver at 01:48 was a friend of mine. The fantastic british stuntman and jazz musician Alan Stuart. Funnily enough, his voice was dubbed as he was a proper cockney. RIP you legend 🙏
@@Bundeskaiser There is no such thing as "heat vision" in real life, but let's say it functions sort of like a laser beam, and skip past the question of how one can see the beam in clear, dry air. Then ... It shouldn't be possible. The albedo of a mirror doesn't come close to being 1. In real life, a laser beam will partially bounce off of a mirror. What will bounce back will be coherent light, much like the original laser beam, but weakened. The left over energy, however, will go into heating up the mirror and that can be a problem. Any beam energetic enough to cut through metal or blow up cars should be more than energetic enough to destroy the mirror. The reflected beam is still quite dangerous, which is why safety rules for the lab absolutely prohibit the wearing of anything shiny, should a laser be present in the lab. Would it be dangerous enough to hurt a kryptonian? No idea, because those don't exist, but certainly strong enough to hurt us. The mirror Superman is holding, though, should be shattering at the very least, and probably melting.
Man, this is going to be good because I’ve watch this movie back at the Philadelphia bass Capitol movie theater about 40 years ago when my sister took me and my cousin to see it because when superman came in to the city to battle General Zod, everyone in the audience was all out of their seats screaming and cheering and whistling during the time when General Zod was being attacked by superman because it was so fun watching that scene in the theaters about 40 years ago because you know why, why because General Zod says, come to me son of Jarell, kneel before Zod .
Best superman movie of all times. Best superman ever. They didn't have all the stuff they have these day to make movie's. And this one is still the best. Rip Mr superman ( Reeves)
You may have a point, but there's a thing called fright or flight, she's too scared to think straight and act fast. Fear, fear is something we often overlooked, until you experience it.
Christopher Reeve was the best Superman and Superman 2 was my favourite, I remember in the 80s it came on TV during Xmas time and as a kid I was well excited.
I remember this And the first one being my favorite movie when i was a kid, i always watched it with my mom as she also loved it, man this is so nostalgic
Terence's accentuated gestures and expression when he calls out Superman to kneel before him never cease to amazed me. it's so hilariously ridiculous every time its played.
PERFECT !!, no CGI, real fight without much tech like nowdays, and great perfformances from all actors, this is where Superhero movies began and that's the way to do it.
I was an 80's kid and the flying and floating around seemed very slow and fake and landing on one foot was weird. Superman should of caught the block wall instead of beaming at it.
