John Williams, this gentleman is a genius. Superman, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws. As far as I'm concerned he's up there with Beethoven, Bach and Mozart.
@@dgregory79 I like both cuts. The Donner Cut has some overlookable flaws (cutting between 2 screen tests at one point... plot and pacing jumping around a lot...) but is overall awesome. The Lester/Theatrical Cut is awesome too. A couple of moments I didn't care for, but overall, I enjoyed the film. (And the Paris bomb opening!) I think the Theatrical cut makes Lois out to be a selfish twit and Superman a bit of a jerk in places. The Donner Cut, if nothing else, DEFINITELY gives those two characters better justice. Love the Brando scenes, although I think Donner wanted to use as little Lester footage as possible just so it would be "his cut" instead of seamlessly integrating the two together. I feel like a mix between the two would yield the best film. Although, as is, both are an enjoyable watch. I always watch them back to back in Superman marathons. Can't get enough Chris Reeve and Terence Stamp! Best Supes and Zod to be sure! :D
@@TheDylandProductions The only thing I like about the Lester cut is the line "General, would you care to step outside?" I thought that sounds better than "Haven't you heard of freedom of the press." Other than that Donner's is the superior cut.
@@ValiantWrestling RIP Richard Donner. I really enjoy both. There are plenty of cut sections (the Lester directed sequences) from the theatrical Superman 2 that I still really love and enjoy, but overall Donner's cut is far superior. HOWEVER, I think it looses some of that awe an appeal on people unfamiliar with the theatrical Superman 2. I'd recommend people watch the original, theatrical 1 and 2 first, and then watch the Donner cut to truly understand the masterpiece that it is. It's one of the most different director's cuts I've ever seen of a film. Part of the plot, the character motivations, and even the entire feel of the film are starkly different - unlike some other films cuts. I disagree with Warners "George Lucasing" Superman 2 in recent box sets, though. Sure, the Donner cut is better, but don't hide or vault up the original Superman 2! It deserves to stay in circulation just as much. The more Christopher Reeve Superman, the better I say!
This reminds me of a friend that passed away a short time ago to gall bladder cancer. The original Superman Movies (especially the first two movies with Christopher Reeve) were some of his favorites. And this song will always remind me of him. This is a great version and thank you for making it. It helps me to honor him. :)
Had there been a movie with Christopher Reeve & Michael Keaton in it titled World's Finest, with those actors reprising their roles of Superman & Batman in the early 1990's,the movie would be a box office hit and it would be good to see Superman's reaction to Batman appearing and disappearing at will without making a sound.
Too bad he had a smaller, less refined orchestra for II and III. It's hard to beat the London Symphony Orchestra, but Thorne did a fantastic job compensating. In some bits, I can't even tell it's a lesser orchestra. Great music all around!
One the greatest Superman lines ever! :) General Zod is about commit mass murder and then Superman shows up declaring that he is about to knock Zod's teeth out of his head and out of his troop's heads too but he says so in the most polite and courteous manner.
That was Richard Lester's line. Funny considering how some people trash him, but Donner's original line "Ever heard of freedom of the press" was really lame by comparison.
Lo. Superman II is the only one in which Zod addressed Superman's name, especially the 80's cartoon that did the exact same thing. In the Comics, he had never addressed the name Superman, nor does the reboot Man of Steel ever did the same. He only referred to him by his Kryptonian name.
Superman 2’s is my favorite version of the John Williams Superman theme. It took what I already love about the first version and made it sound even more heroic and badass
KAL EL the 3rd being the worst. I like how the 2nd movie incorporated footage from the 1st movie in the whole 2nd movie intro. Wish they did that again, but sadly, not.
From what I've read on the internet, John Williams flew out to London to screen the movie with Ilya Salkind and Richard Lester. After the screening, Salkind left the room and John and Lester fell into an argument. What the argument was about, no one except John and Richard know. When Salkind returned, John told him that he simply could not work with Richard Lester. With that, apparently, John was done with Superman.
true, this just screened on Aussie tv and i thought it would be nice to relive this movie with my 4 year old daughter, WOW! how cool to watch this again after 30 years! we watched it 3 times this week! love the music!
La música PERFECTA para un actor PERFECTO, si CHRISTOPHER REEVE será por siempre el MEJOR SUPERMAN, esta música de JOHN WILLIAMS será por siempre el MEJOR tema de SUPERMAN. 👏👏👏👏
Jackie Cooper, who portrayed Perry White,Daily Planet editor in the 4 Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve, served in the United States Navy during World War 2. Did those that he worked with in those 4 Superman movies knew that? If any of Jackie‘s Navy buddies saw him in Superman movies 1-4,they must‘ve been proud of him.
0:39 when the snare and brass triplets hit, I felt it in my soul for the first time at around 10 years old, just as it did when I saw the first film. This music basically IS Superman, there will never be a better theme for him.
It would've been super if Christopher Reeve & Michael Keaton did get to work together reprising the roles of Superman & Batman in a movie titled World's Finest by Warner Brothers Pictures. If that happened, the movie would be such a box office hit. But those men worked together in the 1994 romantic comedy movie Speechless, which was the last big screen movie that Christopher Reeve appeared in before he fell off a horse and had damage done to his spinal cord.
@azure rainbow Actually "Village of the Damned" (1995) was Reeve's last big screen movie. His last acting role was either Above Suspicion or the Black Fox mini series, I can't remember what came last, but both came out in 1995.
@@generalzod2497 Above Suspicion was the last movie that Christopher Reeve appeared in before he had his accident falling off a horse. It was for premium cable-tv in 1995.
You will bow before me, Jor-El. JOR-EL! And the music starts. Nice intro. I like the opening credits when they show all the main scenes from Superman 1. I also like the poster very much.
Between this and Williams’ original ‘78 score. 78’s has the stronger initial brass burst, while I prefer II’s bass solo interlude where the bass sound is more strongly heard, giving it more warmth.
Love this film!!!!! both versions!!!!!!! Both R MasterPieceS!!!! Donners is more theatrical while Lesters is more fancy! I love both and YOU SHOULD TOO!!!
I was about 10 when the original Superman movie came out. Saw them all a couple of times over the years. I never really gave the theme music much thought, until they used it on Seinfeld. Those clips put to this music brought both elements new heights.
Ken Thorne did a wonderful job in adapting this song that was originally written, and composed by the fantastic composer John Williams, to me Ken made it a bit more deeper with his style but still a very good theme song.
I kinda like this one more than the original version, specially because 3:46 that's my favorite part of the OG theme, and having it play 2 times gives me chills
Besides Christopher Reeve,2 others from Superman1-4 each made 2 guest appearances on Smallville. The stars were Margot Kidder & Marc McClure. Terrence Stamp,in some episodes of that series, portrayed the voice of Jor-El.Superman's Kryptonian father.
That was weird. But, if you'd listen more closely, he actually said was, *YOU WILL KNEEL BEFORE ME, JOR-EL! BOTH YOU AND ONE DAY, JOR-EL, YOUR HEIRS!!!!!*
They do make a little allusion to it Superman's return by brandon routh got a modern version in 2009 And henry cavill version got a slight glimpse of the theme in justice league when they woke him up when he was in his slumber It's very short but we can hear i They make it a little dark too because he is fighting the JL team
1 of the episodes of Smallville's 4th season is dedicated to Christopher Reeve & 1 of the show's 5th season episodes is dedicated to Christopher Reeve's wife,Dana. The 2006 movie Superman Returns is dedicated with love & respect to both Christopher & Dana Reeve.
It would've been interesting if Helen Slater reprised the role of Supergirl in Superman IV:The Quest For Peace that was released the year before Superman's 50th anniversary in the comics.
