Superman LOSES Lois Lane To Rival KRYPTONIAN! 

There's no 'hero' in this story, just selfish people using each other and acting in petty ways. Oh Comics Code Authority, is THIS what you wanted?!?!

I imagine the editorial meetings for the Lois Lane comic were much like “Where should we go with this?” *silence* “We could have her get married again?” “BRILLIANT!”

At this point calling this book Superman’s “girlfriend” seems super out of place

So this cheese sandwich is a doctor that can change a person at the molecular level, but can’t effectively put himself to sleep?! Was he just absent from crazy sci fi stalker medical school that day?

Here's another Super-marriage trope for you to explore, Sasha -- the marriages of Jimmy Olsen. There have been at least two, to my knowledge: Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #57, where he marries Supergirl (sadly, an imaginary story), and issue #100, where he actually marries his longtime girlfriend Lucy Lane, Lois's sister. That story also relates other near-misses at the alter for the Olsen-meister, so check them out.

First off, Dar-Nell, that's... a name, and overall, he was just a controlling creep, but yet never did anyyhing too awful, yet died lika villain anyway. Someone had half a idea, and never finished the rest. (That Abby reference got a pop from me, love that muscle queen.)

This was, by far, the most likeable creepy stalker she ever planned to marry. Good for him?

You’re right about this one having weird energy. I normally enjoy Silver Age Supe being an ass, but here he was straight-up cruel. Lois normally has spunk even at her most Superman-obsessed; here she just seems broken.

If you'd told me a year ago that one of my now favourite RU-vid series would be about Lois Lane getting married I'd have been a tad sceptical. I doubt I would enjoy reading these comics, not really my sort of thing, but listening to you talk about them is entertainment of great quality. Witty, incisive and insightful, and with so much charm- I don't know exactly how you make these comics so interesting but please continue to do so.

I love how they don't (intentionally) give us any reason to dislike Dar-Nell, we're supposed to see his marriage to Lois as a bad thing only because it's bad for Superman (who showed no redeemable qualities whatsoever)

If Sups really wanted Lois to be happy he could have gone back in time stopped Dar-Nel from dying and them told Dar-nel how to use his powers to travel to the future, but then he would have to admit he does not deserve her.

OMG! That issue was a Super HOT MESS! Great job breaking it down Sasha. As a major comic fan I'm truly glad I wasn't collecting back then. Hot Garbage anyone? The story felt like a random group of ideas thrown together to try and enhance the main plot. That's one mult-verse story that needs never be told again. BLEAH! The stupidity of the story reminded me of Dorothy Dandridge starring as Queen Sheeba needing Tarzan to save and lead her out of the jungle she grew up in.

This may tie into the Brazilian Wonder Woman storyline. 3. People are excited to know about Brazilian Amazon Tribe and mythos. Amazons of Amazonia, First appeared In Superman Vol 1 #59, lived in the Venezuelan jungle, were encountered by Lois Lane and Superman. Amazons of Amazon, the Lost tribe of Amazons, then appeared in Wonder Woman #314, they are ruled by Queen Atalanta. Queen Atalanta appears in #317.

When Lois passed out at her desk, I was _certain_ this was heading for the old "It was allllll a dream!!" cop-out. So delighted that it went to a much different, much more disgusting place!

This felt like Lois' nightmare than a fun story, Superman hitting a new low using her as bait and passive agression and the "love of her life" dying in front of her

Too bad Darh-Nell didn't know about Gold Kryptonite. But if he had, all he would have to offer Lois in that case is just being a Handsome powerless doctor with super-advanced skills. That's assuming he wasn't foolish enough to open the lead case while in the Arctic and freezing to death trying to get back to her. You should also do a series of Supergirl's love interests who died at the end of the story as well. That was at the end of her 70s run when they tried everything to keep sales up, including turning her comic into a super romance series.

Weird. For someone obsessed with Lois Lane, Dahr Nel didn't have a secret creepy Lois Lane room.

Sasha, my best guess for the writer would be Robert Kanigher. It's a crazy story, but it's not "peak crazy" enough to be Bob Haney. And I think Kanigher did write Lois Lane for a good while. He certainly wrote the Rose & Thorn backups from this period.

I think the messed up thing about this period in Superman history is that Superman starts getting a real attitude and thinking he is all that. In the early Golden Age, Lois was her own woman and Supes did his own thing. But in the late Golden Age, Lois started treating Superman like he was a prize she was trying to win. But it gets squirrely in the early Silver Age. Superman starts acting like he believes he is a prize, too and keeps making Lois work to try to get him to marry her, while always dangling that wedding ring out of reach and treating her like she barely exists. I mean, it's like a couple in a bad relationship where the wife did some bad things and then wants the husband back, but he just keeps acting like he's the best thing going and gets revenge by making her work to get him back. No realizing she might say to heck with it and get with someone else. These two had an extremely dysfunctional relationship! I guess it took a Crisis to sort of work it out. Although it's still pretty messed up....Mostly due to Bendis, but I'll just leave that there and walk away...

I think this was your best vid yet! Really enjoyed it. And Superman....Lois needs to get a restraining order. Why can't you find the writer? I think it is because the writer was projecting and didn't want to be discovered. Clearly, they "loved" someone, strung them along for years, manipulated them, controlled them. When that person finally broke free (or in Lois's case, for the 11th thousand time broke free), they (the writer) murdered their rival. They are now living in a secluded location with their Lois - in a shrine room.

Superboy #158, also from 1969, had a similar storyline where Lara and Jor-El survived the destruction of Krypton by being put into suspended animation by means too convoluted to mention here! again, that damn green kryptonite radiation just spoils ALL the fun! and this was definitely the era where it seemed every Superman-related title in the DCU featured some new Kryptonian survivor(s) every issue.

Though I will add one thing that they got right, when Lois assumed that the small town grapevine was talking about her visiting her folks and that's how he knew her name? It really does work like that in small towns. Within 24 hours, half the town will know a visitor is staying with someone and within 48 hours the whole town will know who it is and why they are there.

When comics were considered just for kids I think the stories could literally be about anything. It’s just like “look at the pretty colors.” The plots are nonsense, the dialogue is dumb or trite, there’s no semblance of reality. Pure escapism. But not even particularly smart. Which means human consciousness has greatly evolved. Awareness and complexity. Though we still laugh at farts. Because we’re also apes.

So... Darnell's dad invented a time-space transport machine to get him off of Krypton. Why did they need the suspended animation?! I know Superman points out that time-travel is one of his lesser known powers and explains Darnell didn't know it but how did he forget about the very machine that took him to Earth?

How is it that modern superman (post crisis tell know) is more wholesome then silver age and golden age Superman?

It all happened in one story. This should have been a year long arc, with character growth and development. Plus, Supe's a prick.

I used to watch the Superman TV series starring George Reeves back when I was a kid. I was always amazed at how much trouble she got into. Now hearing these stories, I can see why she got into trouble on the tv series. What I don't understand is How was she reporter!?! Dar-Nell had medical break throughs that she could have published award winning stories about. Nope. Just going to go into the future with him and be his bride, because Super-Man is a self-centered jerk. Sigh. Okay Lois. Have fun. smh.

At least Lois asked one question this time. But this just shows she needs to ask more questions at all times.

This Lois story, being on the cusp of the Bronze age, did "hit a little different". The actual story was, shall we say, just as condescending to Lois' character as many others in this series...but the art style itself seemed significantly more "modern", even somewhat darker in tone and staging, as future artwork in later in that period would be. It actually reminded me of work seen later during the Mod Wonder Woman era. Now if only Lois would finally learn to choose wisely.

Lois Lane's suitors in the Silver Age of comics all scream two things at me: Creepy and Weird. Nuff said.

I know you love Lois Lane's stories, but please focus a bit on Lana Lang. From being Insect Queen to dating Vartox, she had plenty of wacky stunts of her own!
