Just came across this. I was working in the DC Production Department when the artwork for the first issue came in. Being a huge fan of Kevin Nowlan I ran, didn't walk, to the pile of jobs and grabbed it. Seeing Nowlan's stuff full size and in person was amazing. Very inspiring to an artist. I made quite a few full-sized photostats (perhaps more than I needed for the actual production work, lol) of the black & white artwork. Still have them, 28 years later. Great stuff. Hilarious comments on the hairstyles! Only problem with bad, dated hairstyles is they always ... come ... back. The horror!

Love when you guys drag the dated hair styles and fashion in older comics! So funny! The mullet haired Superman is beyond tragic.

Did you guys notice that Frank Quitely mentioned Cartoonist Kayfabe in his latest interview with one of the big UK newspapers? By the way, I’m a big fan of Kevin Nowlan and he’s probably the only artist from my collection of original art that I refused to sell when I needed money. Instantly recognisable and unique style. Also love seeing his inks over pencillers.... Gil Kane, John Buscema, Chris Sprouse being some of my favourites.

I tried but RU-vid won’t let me post a link. The interview is on the Forbidden Planet international website and is a great read. Here’s the part relevant to you guys.... ‘It should have a real world look I mean its set in Glasgow and I was really disappointed with the colouring. It came back with emerald green trees and stuff. It just wasn’t as realistic as I wanted it to be. When it came back out again, we asked Peter Doherty to recolour it. He did an amazing job and I actually watched one of the kayfabe guys you know Ed and Jim. Totally love those guys. Their stuff is so enthusiastic, and their work is so unpretentious. They talk about wizard magazine and Chris Ware with the same enthusiasm. They did a thing about Flex and I listened to them talk about Flex and one of the things that came up was. “Why did they recolour it?” its so grubby and grim. If I ever end up speaking to these guys, I’ll tell them. That’s the way Grant and I wanted it in the first place. I do understand when people don’t like when creators go back and change things. I do get it. They way it came out when Peter coloured it was much closer to what Grant and I wanted in the first place.’

Just for context, there were no other Kryptonians in DC Comics from 1986 to 2004 (when Kara Zor-El was re-introduced by Jeph Loeb in Superman/Batman). DC was so strict about it, that the Supergirl in the animated series couldn't come from Krypton, so they made Argo a sister planet, or something. I've always said that long-haired Superman from the mid-90s is one thing, but it feels like some artists really wanted to draw him with short hair, and added the long on the back as an afterthought, effectively making it a horrible mullet. Nowlan also inked Superman vs. Aliens II, pencils by Jon Bogdanove. The story in part 2 is probably not as good as this one, but it's kinda fun with the involvement of Darkseid and the New Gods.

I hope you get a chance to check out the sequel, which featured Kevin Nowlan on finishes (again) over Jon Bogdanove. Bogdanove is an acquired taste on his own, but the combo is INCREDIBLE. I posted some shots on the CK FB page last year.

I think Ed would prefer the sequel to this crossover way more, I definitely do. Darkseid and the forces of Apokolips come across a xenomorph hive and weaponize said hive against the people of new genesis while superman is visiting. Resulting in a clash between the new gods, superman, and xenos.

I actually liked when Supes returned with a Mullet because it signified some change and just visually told that time had passed but YES he should have cut it Before ever Dressing Down to Clark as if the suspension of DISbelief wasn't already Strained Enough with the Glasses Gimmick. I've also had many mullets and Ed is on point with the Critique. Only time my shit looked that rough was when I went camping in July for 2 weeks and Forgot my Brush. ...does Earth's Yellow Sun gift the Man 'o' Steel with Full Luscious Locks and the man just never had to Condition his hair?..
