Super Mario Brothers 2 is the 4th best selling game for the NES, which is a pretty big deal considering this didn't even start out as a Mario game!
Originally titled Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic, Nintendo just replaced the old characters with Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach. They did make some other changes, and a few of them alter the game dramatically.
So what happened to the real Super Mario Brothers 2, and how did Nintendo decide to create this game? We'll explore all of that in today's episode!
We'll also go deep on the strategies for beating the game! In this video we'll learn:
* How to beat ALL 20 levels, from 1-1 all the way to 7-2!
* Where to find all of the game's SECRET Warp Zones! Get to the end FAST!
* SHORTCUTS for finishing many of the levels - some of these were intentionally built into the game, and some of them definitely weren't!
* TRICKS for finding TONS of hidden coins, mushrooms and 1-Ups!

Nah, Toad is the way to go, hands down. He may not jump high but his speed makes the game literally a breeze.

Toad is The best character at the beginning and princess at the end because she can float. Luigi is too tough to control, Mario doesn’t do anything well but he isn’t bad at anything either.

I'm 46 now but as a kid when I beat this game it felt like such a HUGE accomplishment 🤘💯 I beat it again recently on my nes classic mini and it has save states so I have it saved at the boss gauntlet and various castle parts so I can just jump right in and do it again whenever I'm feeling nostalgic 😁

I've used the jump-off-the-chain trick, but one problem is it means you skip long and interesting parts of some levels. Also, it means you end up fighting Wart with only two health units. Another trick not used here is that mushroom blocks can rest on background graphics elements like clouds, which can be used in places to create alternate shortcuts, like using the one in 3-1 with characters that don't have a long jump.

You can watch the spinning pictures and time when a cherry will appear in the first slot, it's definitely not random. As a kid, i got very good at getting tons of extra lives at the end of most levels. Spamming the button won't get you three in a row, theres a tapping pattern to it.

I've actually heard people dislike the ending of the game just because of the adventure turning out to be a dream, which is ironic because the same thing was also able to happen in "The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening" on the Game Boy as well as "The Magical Quest: Starring Mickey Mouse" on the SNES.

This was the first NES game i ever beat. After beating Wart and opening that last jar i freaked out at first and thought i had just released a bunch of beezos : D But since my character just kept jumping and happy music was playing i knew i finally beat it and was yelling out to my family that i won and we were all cheering haha. The princess was my favorite character because her float ability made platforming so much easier for me. If i knew how to use luigi properly like you did though i would have liked him best. I used to be really good at getting cherries in the slot machine game. Lost that trick though over the years.

Just found your channel. Awesome stuff sir. I thought I was a master at this game but you showed me a couple tricks I didn't know. Two things I've found playing this game. In world 5-1 at your 44:56 mark while you're collecting all the coins in sub space, if you collect a bunch of coins and then die by going off the cliff while still in sub space you can continue to collect coins for as many times as you have lives to burn. It will go well passed numbers and the alphabet into some symbols or whatever with the amount of tries at the slot machine. Also if you're quick enough while playing the slot and hit the button as soon as you hear the music you can almost always guarantee a cherry. I find this only works if playing the actual Nintendo machine. If you're playing on an emulator or any of the newer Nintendo mini's, with the usb controller, I find this doesn't work as well due to the usb lag. Subscribed.

That's a good tip, and interesting about the music cue that guarantees a cherry. The NES Classic and really ANY emulator seems to have a tiny amount of input lag. It's mostly unnoticeable, except where you need extreme precision, like in Punch Out or this little trick. Thanks for the sub!

The spelling errors are cultural language issues. I work for a Japanese owned company and we get equipment delivered to us that sign literally say: Do not lift with Folk lift here. Kind of like the movie " A Christmas Story" where the Bus boys at the Chinese restaurant sing Deck the halls and instead of saying fa la la la la, the say fra Ra Ra Ra Ra.

Philips was a smart guy. The Lost Levels is not a very good video game for most people. It's not even well designed nor does it follow the design philosophies of Nintendo's other games. It's definitely an odd one.

My favourite part is all the background information you provided about *Super Mario Bros. 2's* origins! It's enough to forgive you for misgendering Birdetta! ;) Also, I have managed to make the warp to World 7 as Princess Peach in all of her pinkness. One needs to lure a Bob-omb over to the bottom of the precipice below the vase, then jump on it and perform a power-squat jump *just before or as it explodes!* Pull it off, and you can easily float over to the vase and warp to the final world!

I'm glad this became Mario 2. It made Nintendo's library more diverse and combined with Zelda 2 shows that sequels can be good without being identical to the games before them.

That's because it isn't a Mario game. It's Doki Doki Panic. But they put Mario sprites on it to sell to the US. The Lost Levels is the real Mario 2.

Please friends if you have a drug problem. You can get clean dont substitute what you taking with sub. Its amazing drug but take it no longer than 3 weeks. And never take xanax unless you have crippling anxiety. I do but drugs arent the answer. Ive wasted close to 100k. In 8 years.. i love you all, and your not alone

This game is a milestone. It gave the Mario cast some of their trademark moves and abilities, like Luigi's floatier jumps and Peach's hover, and introduced enemies that would later become used in the rest of the Mario series like Bob-ombs, Shy Guys, Snifits and Birdo

At first i thought it was so stupid because i doubt anyone really comes here for the “strategy”. But there is so much passion and love behind these that it reminds me of how I felt about all of these games when they were new. Whether intended or not, the fact that you can skip certain areas of the game based on the character you select for the stage, is WAY advanced for an 80s gaming mechanic. I REALLY love this often misunderstood game in the franchise.

They were very bad at explaining things back then like zelda 2 i never knew you leveled up anything etc.

Out of all three Super Mario Bros. games, this is the only one that I could beat. I became so good at the slot machine that I could earn over 90 extra lives. I was easily able to beat SMB 2 with that many lives. This is my favorite SMB game.

In mario 3 save all your p wings and clouds for the final area and you can cheese the hardest levels in the game. Also on level 2 there is a trick involving the leaf powerup and a tube of infinite spawning Goombas that you can repeatedly exploit for infinite lives.

One thing I really love about this channel is not only that he goes through the game showing strategies on how to beat the game but the history about the game at the beginning. BTW, I thought 2 cherries u get 3 extra lives not 2.

Thanks, Bobby! I put a lot of extra work into those history parts, but I think its important to give the game some context. Definitely 2 Cherries = 2 lives, except in the SatellaView version, where you get 4.

The evolution of Mario games never disappointed and always added something new. I am glad they chose this to be Mario 2, The Lost Levels seems too much like an extension of the Super Mario Bros. game. I feel Mario 2 set the bar for future Mario games having different mechanics, level design, and possibilities of what a Mario game could be. This game helped shape this franchise into my favorite franchise in gaming.

This is tied with Super Mario Odyssey as my favorite Mario. People today discount it but SMB2 was THE game that propelled Nintendo into the stratosphere in the USA. It totally expanded the idea of what the Mario games could be in a way the series hasn’t seen since Odyssey, imo.

If you get a star while in subcon and the star fades out as you leave it, it will play the subcon Mario themed music on repeat and you'll hear more parts of the song.

I was unable to beat the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3, but I was able to beat Super Mario Bros. 2. I beat it a few times. I was pretty good on the slot machines and sometimes I could earn over 90 lives. I was easily able to beat this game with that many lives. Out of all three SMB games, Super Mario Bros. 2 is my favorite.

I've played the Lost Levels, and I know Nintendo did the right thing by giving us this masterpiece (I think they should have released that game as "Super Mario Expert Levels" or something like that so people knew what to expect). This game is so weird and flavorful - it really brought a lot to the Mario franchise.

Feels odd commenting on an old post video but like to anyways. If it wasn't noted before, one cool thing you will note that if you play all the levels its equal to a count of 20 thus allowing you to play each character 5 times. If you do this at the end screen when it shows the contributor it will actually cycle through all four names equally on repeat until the screen changes to sleeping Mario. I found this back in the day when I was trying all different ways to beat the game then I had before. Also love the channel and have sub'd since I found it. Had your channel recommended a couple of days ago. I love when channels cover the game history. Star tropics is my favorite game ever. Yes, even more than Mario and Zelda. 😁 I see you did part 1. Will you be doing star tropics 2? I think it is underrated.

He's like the veteran mode character: hardest to use well but can pull off the most fancy tricks if you master him. Ironically Mario's probably the worst character: a slower Toad that can jump about 1 pixel higher.

i think dixie in dkc2 is inspired from peach in super mario usa, cause they both have ability to fly. this game was indeed easier than smb1 and 3, cause it's the only one i've finished being a kid.

I beat SMB 1 & 3 with little difficulty back in the day but could never beat 2. 1st time I've seen the end.

If I remember correctly if you take a magic carpet and position yourself at the bottom of the screen so you only see half your body, you move faster.

I remember there was a way to glitch getting 5 cherries 🍒 in the slot game about 90% of the time. (Haven't done it in over 20 years).

Birdo is mentioned as Ostro, and the Ostros are mentioned as Birdo in both the game and manual in the NES port. It's very strange that such an error became unnoticed over the years during the NES era

I swear I've heard somewhere a different take on that story which went like this: - There was a prototype game for Mario 2 which was shelved for not being fun - Event needed game, that game was taken and modified - Japan wanted Mario 2, so they made a quick level pack - Then the actual Mario 2 went somehow back to a Mario game it was always meant to be and actually released in Europe and North America since they needed game Dunno how it actually is though.

Hi. Remember that strat where you pushed the key up in Desert Land & Phanto never bothered you?? Yeah. How about throwing the key - Anywhere you can pick it back up - as you go down that area you go left/right off screen & reappear on the other side in World 3-3??
