Prehistoric bugs used to be huge, like car sized spiders and dragon flies with 2 foot wingspans, but they couldn’t sustain that size as the Earth’s climate changed and there was less oxygen so it was more advantageous to evolve to be small

@@odin_191 The first mammals evolved in that time period, but would have had a lot of large predators that meant being small and fast was beneficial It varies from mammal to mammal, but once the rest of the animal kingdom became smaller for one reason or another, there was no disadvantage to being larger, in fact the larger mammals would have been stronger so more likely to mate and therefore pass on the 'large' genes We've already pretty much hit the extinction downfall of many large animals due to human activity; Moa, Black Rhino, Quagga, Dodo etc etc And the remaining large animals aren't faring well either, if you consider Elephants, Polar Bears, Whales, Giant Tortoise, etc

To the bug question, it's because of the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. With less oxygen and how insects breathe, they adapted by getting smaller, allowing them to breathe more easily. Back in the Carboniferous period, there were huge bugs because there was more oxygen in the atmosphere. If anyone more qualified has any corrections or additions to this, feel free to respond. Just want our funny boys who will never read this to be more educated.

32:22 Bugs don't breathe, they absorb oxygen through their skin, so their size is limited by their surface area to volume ratio. Bigger bugs can't absorb enough oxygen for their beefy bods and so suffocate to death.

Hey guys, I don't know if you'll see this at all, but I only recently got into podcasts and have binged from episode one in a month or two. love you guys tons and am so excited to catch up to episode like 350 or wherver you are now. Also Ryan's question about why are bugs so small around 32 minutes is because the oxygen in the atmosphere is much less than it used to be. Insects have a different way of breathing and supplying their body than mammals, so they require a much higher O2 concentration. Check out Carboniferous insects, much earlier in Earth's history large trees that are now extinct allowed for insects as large as dogs!

there WERE big insects back in the carboniferous period, back then there were spiders as big as cats, dragonflies as big as hawks and millipedes as long as like 2 cars i think as for the Tyrannosaurus & Stegosaurus thing, we are closer to Tyrannosaurus than T. Rex was to stegosaurus as for the feathered thing, look at cassowaries and shoebills and by pterodactyl you mean pteranodon, those were like albatross, they flew over the seas to hunt for fish

Bugs/Insects are small because of the percentage of oxygen in the air. The more oxygen in the atmosphere, the larger they are able to grow. They "breathe" through pores in there exoskeletons. So there is a hard cap on how much oxygen they can process in a given time. A dog-size bug, in our current atmosphere, wouldn't be able to take in enough oxygen to sustain itself since its breathing apparatus is based on surface area of their body rather than volume of lungs. That's why bugs/insects in prehistoric times (when the oxygen percentage was much higher) where able to grow to much larger sizes.

Nerd fact time: Pterodactyls were actually called pterosaurs. Also, pterosaurs weren't dinosaurs. They were a group of reptiles that were separate from dinosaurs. Lastly, a pterosaur couldn't pick you up, fly and take you away. Aerodynamics would prevent that from happening.

I am by no means an expert, but from what I understand giant insects dissapeared due to decreasing oxygen levels, competition from other animals over food and prey, and in the case of the giant dragonflies; the first flowers were apparently water based and ended up taking to much of the oxygen out of the water for dragonfly nymphs (dragonflies before they can fly) to survive. Fortunately as we can all see insects survived to the present day. On a side note, insects are currently on the decline because of pollution and acid rain. And if insects dissapeared, the food chain and alot of plants will be completely shit out of luck. Also this would make the human species itself a mass extinction event not unlike the meteor that ended the dinosaurs and the several super volcanoes on earth that did the same thing.
