For me superwholock is just someone being part of all three fandoms

I had no idea superwholock referred to a crossover I thought it just meant that huge group of intersection where people enjoyed all three (that was me btw) now I really only watch doctor who. At superwholocks peak I hadn’t joined tumblr properly yet and mostly saw stuff through Pinterest and didn’t see the toxicity

I like the idea of trying to come up with a story that brings all these characters together. Too bad it turned toxic for some fans!

I only knew about Superwholock on a superficial basis but I like the idea. :) And Misha Collins isn't problematic... It's so frustrating that everything someone says is judged so hard right now. Nobody seems to be able to see jokes for what they are, namely mostly harmless, anymore and everyone feels attacked about anything.

Fans should never be shamed when they're gushing or just having fun. Even when its annoying or a tad intrusive, looking at how more recent fandoms have set the bar high in terms of messiness really puts things into perspective. There's a large gap between "acting obnoxious" and "seeking to torment creators as though they were a blight upon humanity."

I was just starting to get into the swing of things on Tumblr in late middle school into high school and superwholock was one of the things I was interested in. It seemed like a wealth of creativity to weave these plots together and make all the manip gifsets, so the point where it was its own universe. But just as rapidly as it had grown, it got SO MUCH HATE, and I think it was because of the nature of its growth and how it could be customized with different fandoms (like adding the Avengers) and to me, it just felt like the haters were taking it WAY too seriously and needed to chill, but that's hard to do when faced with a juggernaut that was Superwholock at the time. I left the Superwholock stuff alone because people showed so much hate for it and I honestly felt peer-pressured out of it.

I loved all three shows, but Superwholock wasn’t something I was too aware of. I knew about its reputation, but not necessarily why. The whole “supernatural fandom can find a gif for any post” meme around that time was hilarious though

Oh superwholock, a simpler time really. I joined tumblr around its rise and I did just see it as a cute crossover that made me pick up supernatural again and watch Sherlock and Doctor who. But all I did really was reblog, look at pretty art and read some fics (though not the crossovers au as I enjoyed my shows to be separate.) I did not know all discourse happened, though I did know people were slowly becoming annoyed by it especially all those reaction gifs, heck I was lowkey annoyed by it. Still I think it is an important part of Tumblr history and is one i think back upon when new discourse rise with the new shows that have taken over Tumblr. When i say superwholock was a simpler time, it really does seem that way, but again all the discourse and hate was never brought to my attention and I was basically sailing through the fandom of these three shows, especially Doctow who which was my favourite out of the three xD (Capaldi is my doctor and you best believe I fought with all the haters xD) Fandom is fun...

I'm a bit too young to have genuinely experienced SuperWhoLock at it's prime. I've heard about it and looked into it and I find it very enjoyable. The fanart, the fics, It's just fun to look at this little part of internet history.

Uh, I literally thought Superwholock was just people being fan of all three shows and trying to push them on other people, rather than even a crossover. Though I was much less active in fandom at that time (and not on tumblr!) and I'm not in all the relevant fandoms so it makes sense I'd have missed most of it. I really just knew it as a vaguely unpleasant thing people were obsessed with and I assumed it had something to do with people pushing for ships to be made canon/convinced that it would happen. Good to know there's more to the fandom than that!

I never got into any of these fandoms but because your videos are always amazing I watched it anyway.

When you talked about how people said "crazy" was abliest it really brought me back. I'm glad I'm not not in that part of my life where I believe everything someone calls me because the Tumblr environment used to make me feel so ashamed of myself

I remember loving Superwholock, but after a while, I became more aware of the issues with all three of the shows and it kind of soured the concept for me...I'm still all about crossovers though, and if I saw it on my dash, I probably would smile, especially if some of the secondary characters got some more attention. The way I see it, it was mostly harmless, with a vocal minority of people who took things too far and it's a real shame that this happens a WHOLE lot with creative and fun things. Can't we all just have fun? And make new things instead of tearing them down? Like, it's one thing to critique, it's another to tear something down out of pure hate. I'd rather do the former, or even use what I feel is missing to create something new. That's just me though. Point is, I'll probably always remember this period fondly, even if the fandom got a little nutty.

Aw man, this brings me back! Late 2012-early 2013 is when I started watching Supernatural and tumblr was my source for fan content. I had only heard of Doctor Who and Sherlock, so I wasn't terribly familiar with those characters. But I remember being interested in this crossover mainly because of the gifs that would cross my dash!

I liked SuperWhoLock, i was neve super inside the fandom but i liked the gifs people made and it was fun to imagine. I was pretty new to tumblr and thus to fandom, so i remember being confused and kinda hurt when people suddenly started hating on it and making fun of the people who liked it. I think crossovers in general are really fun and I don't really get why people hate on and belittle the people who like them so much. The same thing happened with the HtTYD/Frozen/Brave/RotG/Tangled crossover that came a little after SuperWhoLock declined. It's a problem tumblr still has, people hating on stuff and bullying people who like something they don't. Luckily I don't see it on my dashboard as much cuz i know how to avoid that stuff now

what the hell did people seriously deemed cumberbatch problematic for saying that??? His statement was actually no offensive at all? The name those "fangirls" gave themselves was kind of terrible. People have to stop saying actors are problematic for stupid things like that... actors are people, and should be viewed as such. Which means they don't own you anything. and what he said was respectful towards women...not problematic. jeeez...

I remember when I was at Comic Con last yearf on a panel with John Barrowman. Some girl asked him if Superwholock would ever happen, would he want to be in it. After she explained what it is, JB said these fans have too much time, haha. (And he mentioned something about getting the opportunity to whoo both Winchesters)

I was there Gandalf! LOL seriously, even though I haven't actually seen Doctor Who or Sherlock, only having seen Supernatural, I thought it was fun. 2011-2012 was the time I really started getting into fandom and I think Superwholock shaped me into what kind of fan I am now, even if it's in a small way. I have since moved on to mostly anime fandoms, but I look back on those days the same way I look back on my childhood; fondly, with a little nostalgic, but also a fair bit of embarrassment for the dumb things I did.

Does anyone remember fandomstuck? I remember superwholock, I was in the counter group fandomstuck or hetastuck. I don't really remember it's other names, but what I do remember is the groups hetalia and homestuck forming together. I was hetalian, fans of aph or hetalia. We didn't like each other at first, but one day we did and formed fandomstuck. As hetalia focused on personification it becomes a Focus as having personified fandoms talk as 'people' or 'characters'. at first I believe superwholock was under fandomstuck umbrella, as it was basically fandoms coming together that liked each other. Then superwholock got bigger and became it's own thing. Fandomstuck and superwholock had spam wars on tumblr. Fandomstuck was dieing down, by late to mid 2012, as it was mostly a tumblr subgroup thing few liked, and didn't really expanded much. Other than a few youtube vidoes, it was mostly an art and comic thing did have some art. Also homestuck was dying down, and hetalia was still going. Like 2012 tumblr was huge for many fandoms. But I personally believe fandomstuck came before or at least formed around at the same time. Superwholock was just bigger and had more fans, so fandomstuck died. This was supposed to be short, but I got carried away.

i remember i got on tumblr around that time, and i remember really getting into all of these shows around then as well, so superwholock was something so fun for me :D But i mostly just enjoyed the gifs, drawings and small,one paragraph stories i saw on my dashboard. I never really saw any drama, and I never really took it as something that the 3 shows could really come together to film. It was just a fun experience, but it never got too much for me, I'm sorry to learn that real drama was happening for some people :/

I survived SuperWhoLock, it was a glorious time to be on Tumblr.

I miss it, but I love it when I was into Sherlock and Ten period (5 years ago). I watch Supernatural just to understand SuperWhoLock fanarts ^^

I used to be a casual fan of Dr. Who (I haven't watched since David) and I watched the first season of supernatural but I've never been a fan, and I've never seen Sherlock but I was aware of Superwholock (of course being on tumblr at the time), but I wasn't actually aware that It referred to a crossover between the three shows and wasn't just an umbrella term for fans of all three.

I liked SuperWhoLock. It was fine. But I'll admit I actually tend to prefer crossing Doctor Who with Harry Potter for whatever reason. Somehow I'm always surprised when I see/hear about people who don't enjoy crossovers. Just like how there are people who prefer to keep things as canon as possible. I mean, that's fine I guess. But I love crossovers so much, if for nothing else than it gives me more fic to read. It's especially nice when I find crossovers that focus on my fave characters (like when I find SPN/MCU fic that focuses on Sam and the Avengers rather than Dean haha). Now I want to find some good crossovers to read!

I was a part of one of the Goodreads SuperWhoLock discussion threads. We all were just fans of all three shows. It was a nice set up. Threads for discussing the shows together or separately, I never the toxicity of SuperWhoLock until today.

My experience with "SuperWhoLock" was minimal. I had honestly never been interested in anyone from the three shows being shipped, but I have always been interested in crossovers between them due to the infinite possibilities that the Dr. Who universe presents. It's like with Kingdom Hearts bringing all Disney and Final Fantasy characters together, or Klamp manga/anime bringing all of their stories into one through Tsubasa Chronicles and Xxxholic. The "best idea in the world"? Maybe not, but there is a curiosity about what interactions between some of my favorite characters would be like.

Honestly, I didn’t really realize SuperWhoLock was a shared universe thing. I thought it was just a term for being multi-fannish. I’m barely on tumblr, though, which explains why.

I found it preserved in all its glory on Pinterest even after it had started to decline. I learned so much about Supernatural without ever having to see the show. The fandom tumblr side of Pinterest (it's a thing) holds many memories without ever having to engage in the drama.

Lol I made my own crossover when I was like 14 with Doctor Who and MY favorite detective show at the time... Monk.

Man, even being a small scale SuperWhoLock fan I had no idea the depths this crossover fandom had. Wading into its origins, controversies, etc. feels like trying to serenade a bag of cats. Thanks as always for covering more of fandom with such insight and consideration! I myself discovered the trio quite by accident. After getting into SPN and watching it with my mom, a friend turned me on to the New Who and I've been binging it here and there over the years. It was after that that someone online told me, "if you like those two you should watch Sherlock!"

I remember finding this on Pinterest. Really what I notice with fandoms on Tumblr and the toxic side of fandoms is mostly on that site. I think there is a unspoken thing. What happens on Tumblr stays on tumblr. Of course the ugly sides of fandoms show its ugly head every where but a lot of it happens on tumblr.

I completely missed it, I only started to interact properly in fandom around 2013/14 and didn't watch Sherlock till 2016...

In my experience you cant get into one without getting into the others for me it went like this, doctor who Sherlock supernatural and now im broken

I was obsessed with these shows especially Sherlock in early 2016 but never actually imagined them in a crossover. Things eventually cooled down for me with Sherlock s4. I felt like although spn and who had become less and less interesting Sherlock was still connecting these fandoms with their enthusiastic fans. But since Sherlock s4 I have given up on moffat became a casual fan and am happy to see who with a new show runner!

I had a pretty good experience w superwholock and it was pretty fun, loved the artwork and the gifs were really good!

I don't spend too much time engaging with fandoms, so maybe I'm just not educated here but: I'm shocked that people could see Misha as problematic. From what I've seen he seems to be a very kind person...

I managed to mostly miss SuperWhoLock, even during my time in SPN, because I wasn't on Tumblr. I was aware it was there... but it was *over there*. The idea didn't work well for me either, because I always felt that mixing sci-fi and fantasy often doesn't work, because ultimately it has to fall in favour of science or magic. I feel that that can work okay, but it depends on how hard I feel it is to chalk the magic up to science that is not understood. Some things that just doesn't work for, for me, and SPN's angel/demon mythology is one of those things that I don't feel works in conjunction with what Doctor Who has done with demons (DW has never done "true" angels in my book, just creatures mistaken for angels but often turn out to be evil). So for that year I was in SPN I stayed firmly with the Winchesters and didn't cross the pond (except for one HP crossover fic that I recall). I did think that when it came to crossovers, I did like when SPN crossed with cop shows like NCIS and Criminal Minds, but I felt Sherlock was too much of a culture clash, both in terms of British meeting midwest American, and also in terms of the feel of the two shows. But the the Hobbit came out and I hopped off straight back into Middle Earth, so that's that.

I came across Superwholock on Wattpad. I like the idea of crossovers in general. It's always exciting to see characters react to different characters.

I am into tumblr for one year now, so I don’t know anything about the drama but I can imagine it. Anyway i think the fandom is cute and has some amazing arts and gifs!

Oh I miss SuperWhoLock... I do remember people getting annoyed because it was *literally everywhere* on Tumblr, taking over like every post. Shipping wars got nasty too... Still miss being 16 on Tumblr and reblogging SuperWhoLock though.

Thank you for the video! I was around when it was happening, but wasn't in any fandoms, so I just witnessed it, I guess. But it feels super nostalgic to remember how it all was back then. Superwholock is the reason I avoided making a tumblr account for years. It was so massive that even fandoms tangentially popular at the time had to talk about it in some fashion.

This video is so informative! Thank you for going into such great depth and analysing it, it must have taken a lot of effort and it shows. I wasn't particularly into fandom before 2016 so I was completely lost when it came to SuperWhoLock, but this video does a fantastic job of explaining it. I'm surprised you don't have more subs tbh, this is a quality channel and when I first came across it I was perplexed as to why you don't have more. Keep up the brilliant work, I always love your videos for their insight and focus on fandom that not many channels offer :)

I honestly never knew that people thought of SuperWhoLock as problematic, I wasn't part of the fandom back then. I am now, as I've watched all three shows (still now finished with Supernatural though), and just find it amusing to explore the idea of a shared universe.

I was soo active in tumblr at the time when superwholock was on the rise. I followed so many blogs posting about these three fandoms. But I swear I NEVER Ever saw but a few superwholock posts in all those years. I liked the idea, only saw some art and gifs of it tho. It still puzzles me how I missed the superwholock toxicity completely.

Okay; SuperWhoLock is a pretty nice fandom. My experience is looking at fanart, reading FanFiction, and discussing it with other people.

I missed SuperWhoLock at the time, but looking at those fanmade gifs and posts, it was really clever! Amazingly creative. I reckon I'd have got very sucked in.

I got really into superswholock during middle school, it's also when I got into tumblr. Since I didn't really understand how to use the platform it was rare when I stumbled into discourse. In general I'd say it was fun(and i cringe looking back but that's because i was a 11 year old bean), I kind of miss it too. It was my introduction to fandom so it's pretty nostalgic!^^

Oh loooooooooord this takes me back. I remember hearing about this when I was just a sweet innocent Whovian who liked reading/writing fanfic and watching the classic series...those were the days...I barely go on Tumblr anymore because it's a dumpster fire. But I was definitely one of those "the fuck is this??" members of fandom when SuperWhoLock came out. I never understood it, and never tried to... Man this was such a great video, I'd love to see more history lessons like this :D

I got into doctor who quite late, but I do enjoy all three. Tbh I can't quite wrap the universe where all three could exist in the same universe. 2 at a time, maybe, but Idk about all three. That's a lot of strings. I do enjoy character interactions though, I would love to see dean interact with 11 or sherlock interact with castiel and sam just swapping books to read with watson :) but the universes itself? Ooof too much to fit into a single universe.

Oh jeez Tumblr in 2012 was wild- I know since I was in the thick of it. One of the reasons that it got pretty toxic was also due to the Hipster vs fandom 'war' that was going on. Even people who weren't in Superwholock but in other popular fandoms at the time became pretty aggressive in their love for the material. If there was an anti-fandom post the people who were in fandom would make these long threads mocking at going to 'war'- Examples being 'Potterheads grab your wands, sherlockians, hire your criminal consultants, whovians get your tardises ect ect. (cursed posts tbh). Plus there was the fact that the superwholock fandom would piggyback basically any posts with gifs, especially the supernatural fandom which had a reputation of 'having a gif for everything.' (those types of posts commonly ended with the harry potter gif saying 'why is it when anything happens it's always you three') Although, all of the superwholock stuff seemed to end abruptly after Dashcon (which I also unfortunatly went to since it was a ten minute drive from where I lived). It seemed that after all the fandom stuff surfaced in real life it got cringy really fast. The declining fandoms was an absolutely huge reason that Superwholock fell but Dashcon in 2014 seemed to be the nail in the coffin.

I Didn’t Know About SuperWhoLock Back Then

I didn't dive in deep, but the good ones I found never kept all 3 teams together, it was usually Sherlock using the Doctor to get the Winchesters or vise versa. I really loved the gifs too, it always amazed me how well the conversations worked even when the subtitles obviously did not match the mouth movements. Could you do one of these on how Hogwarts/Wizarding World has become an AU independent of Harry's arc?

I've never been a huge fan of tumblr, but as fan of all 3 of the fandoms, I was aware of SuperWhoLock and actually enjoyed the idea. There is one clip with Mark Shepard, where he actually talked about it (the question was not about it). I have to admit, I was never a fan of Sherlock and John stories, never saw the appeal, I just really enjoyed the show and never really got into fanfictions for it. With Supernatural, I actually really got into the show, thanks toa friend, who was a Destiel Shipper, before I had only watched the sow now and than, but around season 4/5 I really got into it. And yes, I loved reading Destiel. With Doctor Who, I really love the show and was somehow always more the cannon fan here. Rose and Ten, yes to that. I wasn't such a big fan of 11, but I liked River's story line, and many other aspects of the show, I'm a fan of the show itself. I enjoyed 12 right away, even with his stories being not that great mostly, I liked the doctor much more than his former reincanation. When it came to fanfictions, I somehow found Missy and the Master recetly much more interesting, I've never really read any 11 or 12 stories. When it came to stories in the Who universe, it was always more the Spin Of Torchwood, that goit me reading (but that stopped after I actually met the actors and got to know one of them a bit better). With reading fanfiction of gengres, it can become too much at one point and you will shift. Sometimes, you abandon the fhip completly or you come back to it now and then. I wouldn't say, it's about the fandom itself, because I still enjoy supernatural and look forward to every episode, but it just got too much. It did feel like most aspects about parings was written about. Coming back to a certain ship over some time, can be great, because, there might be new developments, maybe you forgot stuff. My latest fandom, which got me REALLY addicted is Dirk Gently. The show is in a way something really special, because the shows creator Max Landis, said about it, he always wanted to create something, fans wrote fanfictions about and that the show itself, is basically a fanfiction to the books Douglas Adams wrote. So creating fanfiction here, reading them, it feels so right, because it's a show, that actually wanted his fandom to do just that. Supernatual is a somehow a favourite to write Crossovers with the show. It is fun and it keeps fandoms alive.

Hello. I have just found your channel and I friggen love it! The level of detail you take in exploring these fandoms is fantastic and I wish I had found this channel sooner!

I can see how it could appeal to people though I never really got into it myself. I thought about it when I was considering joining Tumblr two years ago (which I have since left) because I was kind of into Sherlock at the time, but I ended up spending my time on Tumblr in the Star Wars Rebels community.

I got into SuperWhoLock around 2012 when my friend introduced me to Tumblr. I wasn't heavily into the fandom but once I started seeing a lot of hate for it I started to hide the fact that I loved the crossover idea. Separate from tumblr I looked for fics, gifs, and fan videos. Around the end of 2016 I saw more of the "toxicity" go away and was glad I could say what I liked without getting weird looks. I love the concept of crossovers. It's a fun way to meet other fans of the same shows. I just wish it hadn't exploded in the way it did, or fallen apart. But you're also right about the shows change in direction caused the SuperWhoLock concept to cool and disappear almost completely. I would always look at it as a fun time, And continue looking for fics.

I missed SWL since I didn't get into any of said fandoms until around 2015-16 or so 4. I ABSOLUTELY love it!! Tho It helps that I do ship Destiel and Johnlock and I adore any crossovers with these fandomes (Dr. Who and Merlin being my fave, ngl) 5. Yes, the haters did make some good points and there were some mistakes made in the fandom, but really, people need to take a step back and calm their tits

I only had good experiences and was quite happy to be on board. I know it was not like that for everyone though. I think it's better it's smaller and (largely) de-toxified and relaxed now. I am still in. It just combines the shows I like to watch. That's all for me.

Can you do a video on Star Vs The Forces Of Evil?

This was a super interesting watch! I love fandom history content, there's not nearly enough of it out there. I was dipping my toes into fandom at the time SuperWhoLock rose. I had a brand new tumblr account, & was mostly confused by the platform & its content tbh. My only fandom was HP, so the way I saw it, SWL was this Big Weird Thing that annoyed most people on the site. I found SPN gifs funny & innocent enough, but the Crossover did feel a bit invasive at times. It's nice to look back on it now with a widely different perspective, shaped by education & experience in fandom.

I didn't join Tumblr until a couple years into it, and as much as I loved Doctor Who and Sherlock I was mostly sticking to the theatre fandom. Sounds like it was the same level of toxicity as the Les Mis shipping wars.... What a nightmare that would have been.

i'm too young and came into fandom too late to really experience superwholock, although i did run into a lot of the leftover content through pinterest. i think the concept is interesting and harmless, but it just got too big too fast and couldn't survive the toxicity/change in shows. i'm glad it hasn't lasted, to be honest. it feels like such an early-2010s thing, and the tone of fandom and what's acceptable has changed so much since then.

I discovered Tumblr when Superwholock and Merlin were pretty dominant there but I had no idea how Tumblr worked so I didn't really stick around. I did see all the Merlin cast vlogs and Superwholock fan videos on RU-vid though I remember trying to watch as many as possible before going to school lmao.

Oh man. When I was part of superwholock, I was still on ifunny. Hadn't even heard of tumblr, so I had a VERY different experience of it.

I was pretty into Sherlock at that time, but most of my engagement with fandom is through fan fiction so while I was aware of SuperWhoLock, it was pretty easy to just scroll past the occasional crossover fic that I came across. I'm not really surprised that SuperWhoLock disappeared so quickly, I have this theory that the fandoms with the most staying power are the ones where the bulk of the fan engagement is through fanfiction. You can keep writing fanfiction basically forever and it can be self-perpetuating (examples: the massive amounts of fanon/adjacent pairings built up around the kylux fandom, or how many sterek fans have never actually watched Teen Wolf). But with vids and gifs and edits, you tend to need more canon content in order to keep the thing going.

Would you ever consider doing a Doctor/Master video? It was my first ship, so it has a special place in my heart. Plus it has a long history in Who canon!

i was just part of a fandom drama once (and i hope i will never be again) it was all about the whole TJLC/BBC Sherlock fandom drama. I was and still am part of TJLC but allways stayed away from aggressive fans who spamed other peoples and attacked actors on twitter. But everytime i made a post distance myself from those TJLClers i allways got hate anons like "TJLClers are all the same. You are all misogynistic assholes!" etc. If something like that happend to the SuperWhoLock fandom i can only imagine how quickly that got out of hand.

Bee Shrek Test in the House is superior

I remember coming across the term SuperWhoLock before. It must have been super early in its conception, cause it seemed to just be a superfandom of sorts. Oh, you like these three shows? Then you're a SuperWhoLockian. I never knew that it had its own canon, or the crossover elements.

I was a fan of Sherlock and Who at the time but not supernatural so I knew of but I never got into it nor did I know just how contravercial it was. I wish crossovers were more accepted in famdom, I really enjoy them.

I'm that one person who always comes late into fandoms. And somehow actually when I found supernatural, Sherlock and doctor who last year. I actually watched season 5 of spn, season 1 of Sherlock and the regeneration from Tennant to Matt Smith at the same time...

I loved the series separately and I liked the concept of a joined universe, but I wasn't really involved in the superwholock fandom. I liked some of the gif sets but that was it. Fandoms are time-consuming and superwholock was so big at that time, I just didn't feel like participating in it.
