I actually really like Pon Farr as long as they are actually in love with each other, most of the fics I’ve read about it haven’t seemed problematic to me, but I can see how it could easily have issues. Although, I could be a bit more blind to this because I tend to find toxic relationships extremely interesting if they are done well, like Hannigram. K/S is one of my favorite ships btw. Though I’m not so sure about other mate or die situations, some of the stuff having to do with heat in A/B/O fics can seem kind of problematic to me.
Exactly. Pon Farr fics are enjoyable if both parties are consenting. With most K/S ones, you can tell they're really in love so I see no problem with it.
I like a good pon farr fic honestly, if it's a short smutty fic or a long and talk about our feelings after fic. Spirk is totally endgame, but I prefer spones because they have a different type of dynamic I prefer in pairings. With Spones fics, they sometimes treat the ponfarr um, remedy as a logical medical procedure but then feelings get in the way, like a friends with benefits situation. Another one of my favorite seldom talked about related tropes the Get Married Or We Can't Continue These Negotiations (McCoy usually with an aversion to marriage, being a divorcee), or my less favorite No Virgins Allowed Planet, somehow they just know, don't ask. Soulmate AUs, Omegaverse, Arranged Marriage, Fake relationship, all of these give you the advantage of a short narrative to get you're favs together. If you think about it, that's just what fanfic is, the advantage fanfic has over original work is that you don't have to world build or introduce people, we all know what's up right at the get go, let's just get the juicy bits already. All these things are just the fast-pass of tropes. Even if you're not a fan of any of these, I don't think it's impossible to find something you like, so many different writers out there, they all can bring a new take on any of these situation. I am wondering how much Mate or Die have influence the Omegaverse stuff you see today in fandom. Though Omegaverse is less Mate or Die and more Mate Or Be Vulnerable To Someone That Isn't Me... Also DS9 is the best ST show imho, but TNG and TOS will always hold a special place in my heart.
I love the Pon Farr aspect of K/S, whether a one shot or part of a larger story. It’s an interesting part of fandom. But with the more expanded mate or die that isn’t based on alien biology BS, I think I prefer it more in abo fics that already have some sort of established relationship, whether friends to lovers, or they’re already in a long term relationship. It’s an interesting way for people to come together, since we ourselves don’t have to be worried to being slaves to our bodies... at least in that regards. grew up watching Next Generation with my dad, so I gotta say that's my fav, although I do really enjoy the original series/movies and the reboot movies. Pon Farr falls in line with ABO for me as a trope that I can really enjoy but also easily become uncomfortable with. I feel that the intensity of the "heat" can sometimes come off as a sort of hyper-lust, which can be really fun and works well in fics, where emotions are usually heightened...but in the end, I think how it's handled just comes down to the author and their unique views of consent and relationships...at least, it has in my experience
My favorite version of this was in twokinds, one of the characters goes into heat and her boyfriend spends the rest of the chapter doing everything he can to try and keep her calm and together without sleeping with her because he doesn't want to take advantage of her when she's not in her right mind... of course as soon as shes back to normal theyre going at it like rabbits, but then that becomes a really important plot point in its own right

Your Spock and Kirk video is what made me decide to start watching Star Trek. Watching the episodes, I was so looking forward to Amok Time because I read so much about it way before I got interested on the show. It really is quite an iconic episode.
You should do a full video on Amok Time, and you should mention that one scene that kickstarted the Uhura/T'Pring ship. :P "She's lovely, Mr Spock. Who is she?"
I've read alot of fics that have utilized the Pon Far trope, sex pollen and what have you. I think the better ones are those in which it is used as a catalyst of revelation about feelings and such. it really is fascinating the different ways it has been utilized in fandom. I have even read fics where Pon Farr was more incidental, something that happened during or after the growth of a relationship as well. Thanks by the way, it is always awesome watching your vids, and as someone studying the trek fandom at the moment for my MA, it was informative.
I'm a huge fan of all of the Star Trek iterations, but the Original Series holds a special place in my heart. K/S is definitely my favorite pairing! :D

I will admit that DS9 has the best writing (you know, actual character development) of all the Trek's. Though I've not seen any Discovery- too many lens flares in all the bits I've seen. I do however, have the most nostalgia and feels for Voyager. ...which is probably obvious given my user name and pic here on youtube. DS9 is my strong second favorite, only beat out because I've always enjoyed the Voyager fanfiction more, possibly because there seems to be far more of it.
When I first got into fandom in 2010 my first OTP was Spirk. You kinda discover the Pon Farr fics really quickly ;) Some of the best fics in this fandom the ultra-plotty Pon Farr fics. Spock trying to hide his illness, Kirk debating his choice, the h/c is nearly too much. My fav Star Trek series is still TOS - admittedly I have not completed DS9/VOY nor watched ENT.

My favorite thing about the Star Trek reboot is that now people are re-writing classic episodes in fics to be in line with it, or do some variation on it. And Amok Time is always there. I'm a little more fond of the trope when both characters are aware of what's happening before it even starts, and they've agreed on it beforehand. Spirk is the only pairing I can read it with though, with some A/B/O exceptions. But even then it's better if they're in love beforehand. Also I'm just gonna bring up my Star Trek rare pair now, because I don't know when you'll bring up Star Trek again, it's Hayes/Reed from Enterprise. I have problems with Enterprise, but at least I got a ship out of it.
Great video and I tend to enjoy these tropes myself and I don't feel apologetic about nor ashamed. But I have been known to walk my own road and find those who are as like minded as myself. Deep Space 9 is always my favorite! But TNG makes an extremely close second! I love how the main cast and sometimes supporting cast gets a great look into their personalities and backstories and how it took a lot of time for them to really have character development. Such as Julian! He was sort of more arrogant and naive at first and nearing the end of the series he was more mature and kind. I guess that's one of the reasons why I'm in love with him. (uvu); oops. Also Garashir is love, Garashir is life. Sisko is best captain. I low-key ship Lwaxana and Odo. Saddest episode for me has got to be "Far beyond the stars".
I only very recently got to watch the original series and i'm soon through with the second season, i fell right in love with all the characters and i guess my fave ship would be a threeway of spock, bones and kirk, they're lovely ^____^ But anyway, i was so happy when i watched the pon farr episode since i finally found out where it originated from, it was very amusing to me seing exactly the trope which i read so many times alteady, though in other fandoms... I really enjoy the posibilitues with this trope since it can get very problematic if you wanted it to, but also may result in some of the fluffiest fanfics i've read... I love how every author has another view on things... And sometimes i'm just there for the smut, and that's nice too ^__^ :3 I' so looking forward to more star trek videos from you! Nooo don't feel alone! I haven't made it through all of the series yet (I'm a quarter of the way through TNG) but I love TOS cause I love Spock and how campy it gets. I don't mind the mate or die trope, like I understand how it can be problematic, but it's for fun! I haven't read much K/S admittedly, but I love the Sterek mate or die fics when I read Sterek!
I've definitely seen more Next Gen elisodes than I have for any other shows, but Voyager will always hold a special place in my heart. Janeway and Seven of Nine will be my OTP until my very last breath.
TNG because it was my first venture into Star Trek and shipping. I shipped Beverly/Jean Luc as well as Beverly/Deanna. Voyager because I loved Kate Mulgrew, and my ship for that one was hard core J/7.
The Next Generation all the way , but Voyager is a close second. Also, I know this is a small ship, but I love The DoctorxSeven from Voyager, it would make my day if that was ever done. Great video!
I can enjoy Pon Farr fics occasionally, but mainly when it's the emotional drama at the forefront. I'm not that into super explicit fics, and pon farr always walks that thin line for me. I'm mainly a K/S shipper, and while I do like some pon farr fics, they're not my favorite "get together" type of fics - I do enjoy the idea of pon farr fics once they're in an actual relationship though, and the discussions that comes with that. And there are way too few of those!
I’m most partial to TNG, with TOS a very close second. I haven’t seen Disco yet, other than the pilot shown on CBS. I’ll probably binge during a preview. I have to wonder why it’s Spirk and not Kock, though.
I really enjoy most versions of Star Trek but Tng followed closely by original are favorites. As for the trope, it depends on how well written the story is as long as there is some type of consent.
Voyager and TOS have a tie for favorite Trek for me but DS9 is awesome in part dew to the fact that it's the series my fiance and I specifically waited to watch till we moved in together so we could watch it together
My fav 'heat' pairing is Dark Angel Max & Alec. 'Heat' is cannon in this series bec the main character is a genetically created human and has some feline DNA spliced into her genes so she, like other female felines will go into heat.
I have to admit to really liking Voyager as far as the tv shows go. I am also enjoying the new run of movies. I don't have a fav ponfarr couple persay, I'm more of a AOS McKirk shipper. But I guess as far as TOS goes, Spirk all the way
for me, my fav 'trek series is hard to decide. but i'll go with original series, as k/s was one of my first ships. though the discovery runs serious competition, and i like even much bashed enterprise.
Oh I love that you did another episode on Star Trek. DS9 is also my favorite show. ( Garak and Bashir all the way ) But I don't think it's a problem within Star Trek because It's canon and I never saw problems with in the fandom because of this. Every ( old ) fandom has it's problomes but the Star Trek fandom is one of the best ones out there. At least I allway feeled that it exeptet every one. The only thing I think is some what problematic about it is that new canon is not excepted by some people. That would be ok if some of them would not ruin it for others. And what do you thing about Discovery? (sorry for my english. It's my second language. )
I so adore DS9 but am very impressed with DSC, which has a highly complex situation regarding R'Lell and Tyler and Michael Burnham. But where DS9 has many years of episodes, with a full range, so far DSC has less than one season--yet that one season has gone where few but DS9 has ever gone before (and frankly zoomed past DS9 in many ways). Honestly DS9 veered in quality rather a lot, but then with so many episodes how not? I remain fascinated by Kira, and thought her relationship with Odo should have been a lot hotter than it was, which I put down to the fact romance wasn't really what their relationship was all about. Frankly I thought Kira had more chemistry with Dax. But Bashir and Garak--wow!
Personally, I generally like this trope precisely because of its consent issues. I'm very sensitive to rape, dub-con makes me very sad. I think consent isn't talked about enough, so many people don't really know what consent is and I've talked to too many girls who've been raped by their exes and the boyfriend didn't even know he'd raped them because of a twisted or incomplete definition of what rape and consent is. This upsets me. However, the mate or die trope (or sex pollen, fairies made them do it, etc.) is one where I think most fics bring up the consent issues and talk about them, point them out and the characters show their discomfort. I've only come across fics that properly show the consent issues in these situations, and knowing that it's something that's pointed out and expressed in fic is comforting. I know there are fics of this genre that probably don't talk about the consent issues, but luckily I've yet to find one (Sterek shipper, I read almost exclusively on AO3).

Oh god...Not Bounty. People say the worst episode in Enterprise is "A Night in Sickbay", but that episode is terrible in how bizarre and stupid it is. Bounty is if A Night in Sickbay was stripped of all of its pure insanity, with one plot made tortuously boring and the other beyond cringy and offensive. Poor T'Pol man...
Omg ds9 is my favorite too, I guess for on far I would pick Spock and uhura, from the new movie universe , its clear that they love each other, I think this could be a very tender exchange
Pon Farr or Mate or Die is not one of my favorite tags (those would be Mutual Pining, UST and AUs), but I like it on occasion. I do read the summary and other tags closely to see how dub-conny it is, but I will read it. If it's too much, I simply leave it. If it has m-preg, I don't even consider it. I don't have anything against people who like m-preg, but it's REALLY not my thing, makes me uncomfortable.
While I'm not a fan of this trope in general, I make mad props to the writer of AMok Time for making arguably the most plausible version of it maybe ever. Shame that none of those people were apparently consulted for the Voyager episode Blood Fever. >:( I won't even go into how blindingly problematic that one was. Deep Space Nine is my favourite Trek by miles, largely because of its overarching narrative outside of Trek’s usual episodic nature. Although I have to say that Discovery is quickly catching up with it.

I grew with Star Trek in syndication. Even to this day, I don't see it. McCoy/Spock yes, but that is as far as I'll go. Star Trek Reboot: on screen Spock/Uhura as seen, one of the best romances for Star Trek outside of K'Ehleyr.
