Unfortunately, this info does nothing to help people who take supplements, per Greger's advice. B12, D, Iodine & Omega3 are all listed as nutrients of concern by Greger. So this exposé doesn't give us much to do in an actionable way...
You won't need to take vitamins and supplements if you just consume the centenarian diet as explained in the 1992 article with the title: Nutrition for the Japanese elderly, by H Shibata. See if you can get the complete pdf version.
He's got many other videos on those specific supplements. His videos are short and can't contain info on everything related in every video but he goes over those ones elsewhere. Basically, I think the conclusion is that most supplements are unnecessary with the exception of the few that are recommended. The pinned comment has a link to other videos.
@@smudge8882 Brands can lie and put the GMP logo on their label and no one would even notice or catch them. Nobody verifies it and there isn’t a law that says you can’t claim GMP. GMP is a recommendation. The logo doesn’t mean they had to pass inspection or regulation. You’re still taking it on good faith of that brand. Look it up I’m telling the truth.
Exactly! This info is good, in theory. But it does nothing to help people who take supplements, per Greger's advice. B12, D, Iodine & Omega3 are all listed as nutrients of concern by Greger. So his exposé doesn't give us much to do in an actionable way...
Sometimes you gotta do your own research. I've found that liquid vitamins have the least ingredients which is why I lean towards liquid vitamin B12 and D3/K2
@@ismailkolasinac79 It would be great if it were that simple. However, the whole point of the video is that supplements are not regulated. You cannot tell what’s in them by reading the label.
I'm actually thrilled about this, all those supplements add up$$$ so now I don't have to buy them anymore...there are foods and seeds and nutritional yeast etc that gives all you need
Saw Palmetto used to work for me, but then I discovered that Flaxseed meal was even better. So much happier to use a "food supplement" as to a product of the supplement industry. I used to believe a lot of their sports performance marketing bahooey and spent a bunch of money on stuff that was better avoided or better sourced in a healthy diet. It was a pivotal point in my nutrition self-education.
@@1234kingconan Yes I do purchase B12 and D3. But also I work outdoors so I get a load of D naturally. I suppose it's a roll of the dice. I buy from one supplier and I've not ever seen a complaint and I've never had any deficiency issues (but also I drink well water unfiltered, so it's quite likely I'm getting natural B12 as mankind did for ages. TBT I may eat enough nasty meat products (by nasty I mean conventional not grass fed on pasture 100% rotational grazed livestock-which is different but also not optimal. My diet plan allows for exceptions once or twice per week. It was a 5/2 plan that worked so well, I don't have any trouble flexing it to accommodate occasions and holidays. It got me converted. Now I simply don't want so much of the stuff that used to make me feel bad. I like it, I grew up eating that way, but I don't "need" it and so it's easy to avoid MOST of the time. But the imperfection of my plan is how it's lasted 7.5 years now. I'll have to write a book maybe. I'm in good health at 56, converted at 48 and still eat what I want, but love everything I eat--and I get full when I eat, I don't have to hold back on anything but the less desirables. Leaving them off them menu for days at a time, frees up space to pig out now and then. If you don't get it here, maybe the book later. Cheers.
@@wadepatton2433 as opposed to? Why do people say that about supplements but not about drugs? You go to a doctor they give you a bag of pills. What sports stuff do you mean anyhow? It seems to me that whenever it comes to these things it’s a damned if you do damned if you don’t thing
@@l21n18 Human nutritional needs are best served by the least processed plant foods we can consume. That's what you'll find out if you dig to the bottom of what we actually know now, and discard all the industry BS and lies. Society is deeply mired in the disinformation of mega companies who only want more profits and have zero interest in real human nutrition. The "sports stuff" I'm talking about is all the things sold by Hammer Nutrition. They have about 100 products and if you read all the promotional stuff--you could/should take every single one of them for your best performance ever. Food works. Whole plant food works best. It's what worked to get humanity through 1000's of years before our food supply and agriculture got industrialized and we began using chemical ferticlizers to offset the infertility our farming practices were creating. We masked the problem with a solution that made things worse in the long run. Drought, Flooding, Erosion, and Compaction of soils is all made worse by using chemical agriculture. And about that same time we learned to tear apart complex starches and remove the fiber and other components for better shelf lives of products. This is good when there's a shortage of food. We then began creating fake foods from parts and pieces of sub-optimal (cheap) foods and food wastes. We used colors and chemicals to flavor up these food by-products. The very best of them we humans eat, the next level down is what we make pet foods from. All this changing of the diet has screwed up our normal built-in automatic gauges for when we're full. We've even developed issues with knowing when we're hungry. We let corporations feed us most of the time. Result: Sickness. 90% of all the big problems we have today and have had for a few decades now are directly caused by what and how much we eat. We overeat because junky foods and fast foods have most of their fiber removed and are also laden with added fat and sugar (both are products plants, but super concentrated forms as rarely or never found in nature. Most all medicines are designed to manage illness, not cure it. Eating right cures most things in most folks, as you'll see if you look at the best sources of information. The best sources are not selling, nor are they heavily influenced by the biggest corporations in the world. Good luck with whatever you do. I changed my ways and will never go back because it feels a LOT better this way, everyday. And because my plan is easy because I made it to fit my life and didn't copy someone else's paper.
Ugh, that leaves us in position of “buyer beware”. I supplement B12, D3 in winter, trying butterbur for headaches. I stick with Now brand, been around a long time, for what it’s worth, but the supplement industry really should encourage regulation to at least guarantee that people are purchasing the actual product that is supposedly being sold at the doses that are listed. Leaving aside any health claims with an* ,so what, at least we can try these things knowing that we’re actually trying them and not just taking a capsule of rice powder or whatever and hope it’s not harmful
Have you tried ginger for headaches? I know Dr. Greger has a video showing ginger being just as effective for migraines as the prescription migraine drug. It's easy to buy empty capsules and put powdered kitchen ginger into them so you know what you're consuming too
Those supps are probably fine. The ones in the paper are “proprietary blend” supplements that people buy at GNC or gas stations. Not the organic vitamin ones.
Thank you, Dr Gregor. You are the only source I know of where the average American can get the truth about all the con games going on out there. Thank you for keeping us informed.
Blood test at your doctor or lern to read studies from trusted sources. If you eat a normal diet with alot of varity you will be ok for the most part. There is nothing easy about optimal nutrition everything you do to your body has possitive and or negativ sideffects.
Everyone stop saying GMP “certified”. It’s not a certification. Anyone can claim GMP it’s just a recommendation, there is no inspection or testing. People please look it up and stop trusting brands. Brands put GMP on the label because you blindly trust them lol. It’s marketing. Look it up. But whatever you won’t so I’m going to stop.
There are legitimate reasons why the general public might ignore government funded research findings. That research can either be ambiguous (i.e. the "balanced" diet) or just wrong (i.e. butter is ok now). From a harm perspective drugs are in a league of their own compared to vitamin supplements after all.
I think some supplements are registered as drugs, they are more expensive but much more regulated. Also, it's quite obvious the cheapest ones are with the highest probability of impurities. There are also more reliable brands than others- doesnt mean they're absolutely safe, it just decreases probability of added harmful substances
This is very concerning. I do take a few supplements for D3, B12 and Algae based DHA. I was aware that the industry was largely unregulated but I had that third party certification meant something! My mistake to assume. How do other countries regulate their supplement industry? I'm wondering specifically about Germany. I would like the US government to at least test all supplements to make sure they have the ingredients that are listed on the label, in the dosages listed, and with no adulterants or non-listed ingredients. Or, maybe, that would make too much sense!
I think they’re probably safe. The organic B12 with the GMP label isn’t the same thing as Black Widow and Yellow Venom or whatever in Dr’s video. Those are like gas station pills.
there is no need to be an advocate *against* supplements, which do help many people when food can not solve it or healthcare is inaccessible. simply advocate for GMP certified. otherwise, it’s being somewhat of a shill for the pharmaceutical industry too
GMP labels can be lies as well. Any graphic designer can put the logo on their label. But if the brand has been around for a while it may be more trust worthy. Who knows.
I havent seen a video on Digestive Enzymes. I do use as a supplement to assist with my sensitive digestive system. Is it possible to provide info on this via podcast/video? I would love to hear your commentary.
In a world where everyone is gaming the system, one has to look at the overall impact of selling snake oil. When compared to the drug industry, the supplement makers look like a gnat on your ass.
Lie, cheat and steal is all too common today. Greed and selfishness is every where. You can not trust people, businesses, or government to be honest and truthful. Parents and teachers stopped teaching children the "golden rule" 40 years ago and now honesty and caring for others keeps declining. Society and business can not function if no one can be trusted to tell the truth.
They never stopped teaching the golden rule. The issue is that regular people can't afford to follow it and businesses have no reason to follow it. Capitalism working exactly like it's supposed to- no cost is too high as long as there is still profit to be had.
were they forced to take the supplement or did they just risk losing their job? pick one. or are you admitting that working is 100% required to live, and thus jobs are a form of forced labor under threat of death?
When big interest groups, big $, big corporations buy governments, they expect their governments to protect corporate profits, not the consumers. Nothing will likely change until we get private fund of public elections.
Even when the research shows that it can harm someone, they so 'LETS GOOOOOOOO $$$$$$$!!!'?!? w.......t.............f Then people don't want government in their life's, but then wait on the government to tell them no for something they can easily check themselves? SOOOO LOGICAL. smh
Thanks Dr. Greger, your videos are perpetually fascinating, and a someone who does take a number of supplements, I will be doing some further research.
