Hey, bro, I live in a really crappy country and here we have no record stores believe it or not, so I downloaded music all the time. I felt really shitty because of it though, and I promised myself that I would buy music as soon I'm able to. Recently I discovered that I can order music online, and today I got my CDs in the mail. I ordered more now. I really want to thank you and some other youtubers for making me realize how bad downloading music is. I'm so happy that I have started what is going to be, I'm sure, a huge CD collection. Listening to the music I bought makes it 100 times more enjoyable. No more guilt :)
Hey that was very well said. I think you should do a video about supporting a band that is not signed by a record label and how bands that are not signed need that support.
I'm 14 years old and I've always bought my music. I used to buy it on iTunes but now I buy CDs. I don't have a regular job but I babysit and use the money to buy cds. I like to support the artists and the few remaining independent record stores. I don't understand why anyone would download their music for free...
agree with all you said here dude. especially the part about needing to support bands by CD purchases so you can get merch at their shows. lots of people i know simply say they buy a tshirt and download the album, but fail to see that they can only get a shirt at a show if the band can afford to come to their town. and also, sweet graveland patch and SICK leviathan shirt!
Some great points Shawn. I have always felt that people do not look at the whole picture when talking about illegal downloading. It is much more complex than Lars not getting more money to buy another mansion.
As a Teenager I could only afford to buy CD's 2nd hand but picked the up brand new when I had a job, I recall my first pay day was about $355 and picked assorted albums from Napalm Death, Daath, Aborted & My Dying Bride! good time \m/
When i was a kid we just shared music through pens and stuff like that, i didn't even knew it was illegal... someone told me about this band and i would go and search them online and download it, i live in the middle of nowhere, so when i came across a CD that i liked if it wasn't too expensive i would buy it, just to have it physically, when i started to discover more and more bands of course my downloading increased, but i always liked the physical aspect of it, but i live in Portugal, so as you can imagine money isn't something that is always there, and CDs are expensive, compared to the minimum salary, they are really expensive. Now a days i listen to most of my music in spotify (love that site) and from time to time i buy CDs, just yesterday i got in the mail The Satanist by Behemoth and Welcome to the Morbid Reich by Vader. Two CDs 32 €! thats 44 $!! I only get a job in the summer for 2 to 3 months as a Lifeguard, its well paid but that money as to last me the rest of the year! So i really have to manage it well, i always keep in mind saving some for a concert or two (concerts can get pretty expensive to sometimes to) but it's worth it. What i mean to say is i will buy CDs as long as i can afford and as long they don't get too expensive, i like to have them but i'm not going to stop living the litle live that i already have so a can buy more CDs, im not going to say no to a dinner with my friends because of that... there are alot of CDs that i would like to have but do you know i much they cost? sometimes i see them at 22€ (30$) you know what i say to that? "fuck you" (knowing that a big percentage goes to our corrupt government doesn't help) so i download that album and hope to find it another time at a fair price... I lost my train of thought sometimes but it comes down to: -If i can i will buy the CD and go for a concert gladly -if labels make it too expensive i will not buy them, its as simple as that -i have other interests that end up costing money (bodyboarding, friends, even the movies sometimes like you said, etc... maybe even travel a bit if it does't get me bankrupt haha) so my money gets divided, and i need to manage it really well, and i have to save some for the future as well...
Some great points here Shawn! "You can't put a price on art". Ok. But people do every day. Music is art, but music is also a product and a band is a "brand" if you want to look at it in business terms. I get that some folks don't have the cash to buy music. When I was younger and broke before the internet, guess what? I went without! I bought 1 tape instead of 4 or none at all. Granted we would dub our friends copies, but if you believe in the music and need that tangible media, a crappy TDK tape or CDR isn't going to stand up in a collection. This is the "MEMEME" era. Some feel they are entitled to whatever they want, whenever they want and could care less about how this effects others. Having a label myself, it has been hard to endure, but I think I see a bit of a swing back around to people wanting to buy music again. Fingers crossed!
I think downloading to an extent has its pros because you get to listen to music before buying it. It's like going to a restaurant and asking to taste something before you buy it. Back then you just had to guess and if you hated an album you felt like you wasted your money. But I definitely agree with buying and supporting musicians who do this for the art and for careers because these are people that have artistic talent and people we want to hear more from.
As a younger dude I used to pirate hard to find foreign albums, but now that i'm old enough to work, I go out of my way to snipe cheap albums as much as possible, it's not hard to have an impressive catalog of music when you rifle through bargin bins and come across indie acts from all over the world. Honestly though, Amazon and Ebay have helped me out significantly aswell in sniping cheap albums, it's all about putting your heart in the hunt, there are deals everywhere to be found. Best times to buy are around band anniversaries, holidays, and label birthdays.
***** I never stated or implied that all rappers are like that, because I know they're not. Some rappers are really thought provoking and intelligent. But others, unfortunately, are not.
I think even when there is a free option provided by a band, like their debut album on bandcamp, you should always opt to pay something for their work. Yesterday I found a Brony Instrumental Metal band which had their first album as "Pay what you Want". I could have gotten it free, but I decided to throw a spare £5 ($8) their way. They aren't the best, but they have talent and I want to see them improve with more music in future! They deserve a good start and a chance to learn. I now await all the raging comments moaning about how I even mentioned a "Brony Metal" band in the first place.
I think you're right about people spending their money on frivolous shit. I say get your priorities straight if you are going to call yourself a metalhead! That is why I look down on those gothy type that care more about fashion and "looking the part" than actually caring about and supporting the music. Gothy/emo/scene types put so much money into appearance its insane. I'm glad metal is about the music not a fashion statement, that means it will never die.
One thing that insane shipping to Canada has done is make me support local labels because they charge nothing or little for shipping. There are some insanely good local metal bands I would have never known about and even a metal record label in my province. I love to support them and see them live.
Great video! You raise a lot of insightful points about the industry (which makes sense since you own a label yourself). I've already been buying my music, but your video definitely solidified why I'll continue to buy music and so forth. Cousin Uncle Jim seems like quite a loser. lol
Im sad to say that I download my music.... But I have no job and would love to. Buying album to me is like gaining a trophy. Im hoping to get so whitechapel and Testament albums soon.... but you are absolutely right. A lot of bands struggle with this financially and its bad enough that touring takes its toll on them all. CountBlagorath I hope people see this video and start to appreciate the music a bit more.
I am poor, I stream my music on rdio. I live in Canada its hard to find good CDs and shipping can be insane but when I find a band I love especially an underground band I do invest in buying the mp3s. I also buy CDs and merch from local metal labels and shows when I can. I do torrent rich band's music like Metallica, Megadeth etc but I ended up going to a concert and buying merch from them because I loved them when I was young and they got me into metal. I say to fellow poor people just do what you can, no one is expecting you to have a huge CD and vinyl collection. Support smaller acts you wanna see keep going as your first priority. I am on welfare people. If I can do it anyone can. I think in some countries they don't have music streaming services yet which really sucks but I think they will come in time. We took longer than the US and Europe. edit- there are some streaming services available everywhere. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_on-demand_streaming_music_services Oh course there is still the issue of the government blocking sites in some countries.
I found yet another epic underground metal band called Blood Roots. Listening their song Hollow Theories on repeat it is so good! I love streaming because I have found so much good underground metal and really appreciate the artists who put it on there so I can find it.
Well done kid. Good to see those of the younger generations knowledgeable of this and reporting on it. I was born in 1970. Spent my preteen-teen years an 80's thrasher before I started needing the more extreme. I WATCHED this happen. I watched the slow death of the music industry and the bands that held onto that sinking ship with them. I remember when Lars Ulrich became enemy #1 and the laughing stock of the music scene when he went after Napster. Not so funny now is it......
Also, I seriously ought to organize my cds. Right now, I have a largish bookcase full of cds, but they are in absolutely no order whatsoever. Prolly out to make it a bit easier for myself to find what i wanna hear
Personally, I'm downloading and buying. example: Pantera is already done. But even if they did, I'm still looking to find whatever they made (even the albums before "cowboys from hell"). In the one side Yes I will download the whole discography, but in the other side whatever I'll find i'll grab it (even used, even for a higher price b'coz is out of stock) \m/
I am going to be honest, I grew up in a third world country so I had to download the songs I like. But now, I am an adult and I can buy music because I feel ashamed of downloading it. I want to support my favorite artists. I also agree, people need to buy music for the sake of the musician!
I always loved physical copies of albums, Cds, cassettes, etc and the way to Do that is by going to the record store, (weather it be in my local city, or online store) I today bought MOTORHEAD's IRON FIST album on vinyl(R.I.P LEMMY) and The Beatles live from the BBC on cassette. I have to have physical copies..I'm not a ipod or MP3 person
I agree with this. I don't buy a lot of music right now because I'm broke as shit as a college student with a part time job and unpaid internships. I usually stream albums from bandcamp or spotify or some place like that instead of illegal downloads. I do try to buy eps and albums as well as tshirts from my local metal and hardcore scene in Atlanta though, but I seriously can't afford to buy everything at this time.
Also as much as I know this could be fantasy, I believe there can be some bands who wish to give music away for free, and we can not devalue that form of kindness.
I thought I was the only 1 who thought that, too. Although, I am the only one that is A huge metal fan & buys the cd's from these guys. That's what nobody gets, though.
I always buy cds all the records store in my town have went out of business because of this download shit so now I haft to order my albums on amazon I miss the experience of a record store the atmosphere the racks of music and the feeling you get when you would find a gem or a band you never herd of before and you buy and you listen to it and it kicks ass and how good you feel for buying it there's nothing like it you don't get that buying on amazon you get what you want but you can't just look around and find something you never herd of and get it on a whim
I used to download my music when I was a kid. When I grew older I realized that I was being a prick and started buying my music. I'm now a student in university and my monthly income is about 450 euros (about 600 dollars) +I randomly have some work bringing me some extra spending money. I have to pay rent and live with that cash. I have some savings so I could afford buying a lot of music, but 1) I don't want to spend all of my money on 1 place (in this case music), and 2) I want to keep some of my money saved IF I need it for something vital in the future. These things lead me to be quite picky when buying music - I only buy the CDs I really want the most, others will be left in the store. Here the price of a lately released CD is over 20 euros (about 27 dollars), which is quite a lot of money for my budget. If the prices would be a little lower, like 15 or maybe even 10 euros/CD I would definitely spend the same amount of money on buying music per month than I do now, just getting more albums for the price. This leads me to my question: Is (especially new) music a bit overpriced? If it was sold for a lower price, would that increase the sales and also reduce downloading enough that record labels would get the same amount of income as they do now with the current prices? Win-Win situation for everyone, or just a retarded utopia?
One thing that I noticed is no one talks about the materialistic side of buying physical cd's and shirts. I do love supporting the bands and label and that is not in question9 HUGE supporter of Comatos Music and Italian death metal). At this time in my life I buy downloads because space is limited for me and again it is about, for me, how much materialistic things I want. I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on this in regards to that. And yes I support collectors, so that is never in question either...
ive been buying music since i was 10 in one form or another (im 40 know) ive spent a fortune on vinyl tape cd my itunes libarey has over 2000 albums (i no longer by from itunes since ive found out the % that goes back to the band) for the past 2 years ive been rebuilding my vinyl.i dont buy new releaeses from ebay i buy direct from the label or band.im proud of the fact that ive helped bands like metallica, napalm death, obituary, morbid angel, ahab, celtic frost and countless others just buy paying for music and merch.so i have your back on this one count
The only time I ever download is when I want a digital backup copy to something that I already have on tape or on vinyl. I like to save them some wear and tear and listen to them on my computer or through my phone when running. If I had the equipment to rip good sounding copies to my computer I would, and I plan to eventually, but I see the reason to back my stuff up to save it physical damage. I still blast my tapes in the car and my stereo all the time though. Sadly my record player is broken, so that is another reason I like having digital backups. Other than that I don't support downloading in most circumstances.
Here in India there aren't any shops that sell metal music cd s at all. The scene has just started. So i have to buy them from online sites outside of India. The price of shipping in most cases is greater than the actual cd price. But i do see the value in purchasing cds. So i first download the music then buy the stuff i like. Of course i can afford it now with the job :D But since its expensive i cant buy more than 20 cds a year . But a owned cd is a experience that is just unique and greater than the money value of it. \m/ Hails
Same with Canada on shipping prices they are insane luckily they are some Canadian labels that make CDs. Please check out a local band, Black Moor. blackmoor.bandcamp.com/
My biggest reason for not buying albums is because there are no albums which I like every single song on it, so it feels like a waste to spend alot of money on something that I only partially enjoy( yes, $15 is alot to me since I'm in high school with no job). I just listen to the free stuff on youtube. I'd rather support the artist by buying shirts/flags/patches and stuff if I could afford it.
the only reasons i find downloading to be justified is 1.) you have no other way to get it, i know some small towns wont have a record store or a real place that sells CDs. 2.) if you have parents who just wont allow it, and 3.) if the album has already passed its time. like if someone downloaded "Butchered at birth" from cannibal corpse or "Hell awaits" from slayer or "kill em all" from metallica thats. and 4.) if an album isnt on iTunes and really hard to come by. 5.) if one of your albums got damaged and no longer works.
CountBlagorath "if you don't pay for the album, you have no right to complain that they don't tour in your area" I hit the like button right there. Awesome video.
I agree with this. Though I sometimes download music for free aswell. Sometimes I do it because I may not have the album and I might really want to put a song (or a few) on my MP3 Player (the town I live in doesn't have any stores where I can buy albums. So if I want an album, I would have to go to a town/city that is 1-3 hours away. So really, it's not that often I can go and by albums). But as soon as I buy the album, I delete the file I downloaded for free and replace it with the album. Another case where I may download a song (or a few) for free is if I hate the album but I may happen to like one or two songs from the album and may want to have the one or two songs I do like on my MP3 Player. Like I hate Ilud Divinum Insanus by Morbid Angel but I actually like the one song from the album called "10 More Dead." Am I really going to go to the store and buy Illud Divinum Insanus just for that one song despite that I hate the rest of the album? No. That's a waste. Another case where it would be reasonable to download music for free is if the album no longer has any physical copies left in existence (that never happened with me... yet. But it can happen).
one of my all time favourite bands who have now split up (seremedy) only released their full album and goodbye ep on sweden, so i downloaded them, but i payed for their first ep so i would say i supported the band.
I buy as much music as i can because its my favorite form of entertainment ive been buying music for about 2 years now and i have roughly 65 cds and i want more when its all said and done i hope to have a bigger collection than infidel
For me, pirating an album is only a temporary measure. More often than not I use legal streaming before I buy something, and download the files to feature on an amature radio show I do. I always buy as many albums as I possibly can, but sometimes I just don't have enough money for everything. The fact that bands need to make money to keep going should be a no brainer, but then again some people...
if i buy a cd from amazon. is the band going to get the money or who ever is selling it. its hard to tell since everything is changing, no more stores sell cds
I tend to buy my albums on bandcamp or get used cds from ebay. Say what you want about that is not the ideal and while I agree to an extent, I am on govt assistance (yes, some people will be "morally outraged" by that statement, however I AM sick and I did NOT chose to be, I would love to work, but can't) so buying albums at full RRP and supporting labels by buying brand new stuff is NOT an option for me. Bandcamp I love as the money goes to the artist and it is a lot cheaper, usually, than paying for an actual CD. When I was working, before I got sick, I used to buy a lot of cds from the metal store (which has since closed, which is a very bad thing). I seriously spent all my spare money there. Since being told I had to leave off working, ebay and bandcamp. Plus, of course, the CDS I already had anyways. I don't like Spotify, I'm afraid. I get fed up with albums going from it just as I am getting into them. OK, the copyright people have the right to remove their shit, but at the same time it is annoying as hell. TBH, I also think the music bizz had made a LOT of stupid mistakes over the years, but yeah, I agree with you in principle.
I agree with this 100% besides for one minor exception: National Socialist Black Metal. While I personally love the music, I refuse to support the ideology. Of course there are albums that I just need to have, but I always feel like shit after buying them knowing what I just gave money to.
It depends on the label as well. Some labels will put that money towards neo nazi groups where as others just cycle it back to into the label. Also, if you buy a NSBM album through Hells Headbangers, that money doesn't leave HHR. They bought wholesale/traded for it, so the label already got paid.
Count Blagorath is right people needs to buy music because concert tickets are way too expensive. People if albums sell concert tickets will go down and we can see bands tour on USA soil ! Imagine new Hard Rock /Heavy Metal bands in Arenas and Stadiums not crappy pop, hip-hop acts.
I was not REFERENCING ALL HIP-HOP,RAP just some of awful artist that really do not deserve a mention. I recognized great ones NWA,Ice Cube,Dr Dre,Eminem,Snoop Dog,Scar face,Run DMC, LL Cool J,Biggie,Twiztid etc... I primary love Hard Rock and Heavy Metal but love other music too just not many modern, old school to the bone 70's,80's,90's.
I grew up in a very strict Christian household. Metal was viewed as the devil’s music. I got into death metal when I was in middle school. I couldn’t buy cds so I had no choice but to buy my music off of ITunes, listening to it on Spotify, etc. But now I’m on my own so I’m stocking the fuck up on cds. Sorry is this wasn’t really coherent.
I know where you're coming from, but 1. Where I live, you can't really afford much beyond existence and 2. I'd rather be dedicated to my non-monetary society mentality than to a 3-4 man group of people I might never meat, even to, they, as their music, might mean a lot to my existence as a whole.
Euphemia de Croix I've discussed this in a few videos. Physical albums are the best. I see buying tracks as a waste. You're not getting the whole picture of the whole album.
CountBlagorath What about buying the full album digitally? I agree with you on this, an album is an experience. A good album flows as one piece of art. I like having the print book of lyrics from a CD especially when its an underground band and their lyrics may not be on the net.
First I download the album. If I liked it much I try to buy it. If it is a good album but is not that GOOD I put it on my mp4. If I don't like the album just right click and TRASH!
I am 13 and don't have money to buy it :( so i listen to Spotify but i want to start buying CDs and collect vynils i love so many bands that i couldn't still afford it to but i'll try to buy when i can
My parents are Christians so it's hard to buy something like a darkthrone album. I've recently just been buying the CDs and hiding them when i'm not using them.
I only download some times not like whole album, songs to my phone if i go somewhere i want to listen something and i promised that after i get a job or money somewhere i buy the albums and delete them i am borrowing basicly now.
I have to disagree with you on most fronts here. While it would be great to be able to pump out cash for all the CD's I want at any time, that is just not realistic. What I do is download the record and then buy it once I've heard it a few times and decided it's worth having in my collection. That's just what I do and I'm fine with it but I respect your opinion as well.
