She's gotten a few nominations for her past work but few wins. This is more like a Lifetime Achievement Work for her work on stage, film, tv, and recording.
The way those young actresses looked at her with such awe and respect! THIS is why representation matters! This is why elders are so important! I got chills watching it.
In case anyone missed it at 5:15 when the crowd quiets down a bit you can hear her kids all the way in the back yelling “GO MOMMY” and “THATS MY MOMMY”😭 truly her biggest fans
Thank you for this comment cause I was too busy crying and dealing with the lump in my throat to catch that😭😂. I went back to hear it! And as a mommy myself I just know how proud that made her! Crying all over again y’all 😭🥹✌🏽
I love how Tyler James Williams got her up out of her seat and walked her up to the stage. She was in SHOCK and he didn’t want her to miss her moment!!
Both he and Quinta have since said that Quinta suggested to Tyler that he needed to go get Sheryl and walk her up to the podium. So, both cast members were there for her.
Not only is Sheryl Lee Ralph a brilliant actress, singer and entertainer, she is also highly intelligent. She finished law AND medical school in three years, and then decided to become an actress. She deserved every award she’ll ever be given.
Wow I have NEVER heard of her but we don’t get a lot of these shows in Australia but yea faaabulouse speech and no way does she look in her 60’s, goose bump moment!!!
Whew. This was powerful and made me cry. She has been in the industry since before I was born, and has shown range, grace, and strength throughout. So happy to see Sheryl Lee Ralph get her flowers with her family present to celebrate her.
Back in 1984-85...one of my favorite all time dance hits..was her song: "In The Evening (the real me comes alive)"...and never imagined her 39 years later..winning an Emmy! She still looks fabulous after all these years.👍
I loved how the white lady in the pink dress was cheering her on. Watch it again, of you have to. I almost had tears of joy, watching this moment on the show last night.
@@FaithHopeLove999 That's Hannah Waddingham, who was up for the same award as Sheryl. While not having to deal with the racism that Sheryl dealt with, Hannah also was in the theater (regular and musicals), and had parts in tv/movies and is finally getting the wide-spread attention she so richly deserves. She also seems like a truly good person and just cheers like heck for her fellow actors when they win! Her genuine joy for Sheryl was so fantastic.
@@ninajohnson2347 Hannah Waddingham already won last year so happy to see Sheryl Lee Ralph get it this year. And just like in Ted Lasso, she's gonna cheer on her fellow queen.
SO glad to see the ORIGINAL "Dreamgirl" getting her flowers! well deserved and LONG overdue, especially since it's been 35 years since an African American woman was honored in this category (Jackée Harry won first in 1987 for her role on "227" as Sandra)!
All 3 Original Dreamgirls are officially award winners. Jennifer Holliday won the Tony and a Grammy in 1982, Loretta Devine won an Emmy in 2011, and Sheryl won an Emmy in 2022. Also, all 3 movie Dreamgirls are award winners: Jennifer Hudson is an EGOT, Beyoncé has a record 27 Grammys, and Anika Noni Rose won a Tony in 2004.
She's been in a business for years I'm glad she finally got her Emmy. I'm 43 years old she's been doing shows and movies since I was a little kid. Congratulations to her.
RIGHT! I swear she ran across my mind while crossing of all places: Hollywood. I side-eyed in my mind how they played Ginger in the finale, having a double wedding w/that dipstick blonde on It’s A Living… But look at her now…like she just said: what God has for an endangered species, no one can take away. I cried, I’m so happy for her. From Deena in Dreamgirls to Barbara Howard - Woman of God on AE👏🏾👊🏾🤎
Singing Out Loud: IT'S AN EMMY!!!!!! (Dennis F, you're an 80s Baby as me, you know that theme song!! 😉) Well-deserved Sheryl, WELL-DESERVED 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
She's been in the business a very long time -- singing, grinding and playing second fiddle. Until tonight. Never let go of dreams. Congratulations and well deserved SLR. What an acceptance speech.
Second fiddle? Are you kidding?! She starred in the original Broadway production of Dreamgirls. She played Deena, the role Beyoncé played in the movie.
Those few seconds she takes before she starts singing to soak in the moment up on stage, just beaming and holding the award she never expected to win, ugh it's so good it gets me every time. She had the whole audience in the palm of her hand before she even opened her mouth and it's just amazing to watch her command a room. So well deserved.
From her genuinely shocked reaction to her singing to her truly inspiring speech, this is the reason why I keep watching awards shows! I love this! Congrats, Sheryl.
💯👍 agree! Didn't watch, figured I'd read results today & see the expected/usual winners but this is my first video & I'm 🙌🙌🙌💖💖💖🎶🎵🎶👍 about damn time, best award & speech ... Guess I'll watch actually award show now & see if any other deserving artists actually won!!!!
I listened to her Time to Walk on Apple Fitness+. She spoke about this moment in great detail. As she got up on stage, she spoke of hearing her father telling her to get herself together, so she did. She burst in song, as she deserved. And as she went into her speech, she said she saw a monitor overhead flashing the words: “stop now.” And what went through her mind was, “you’ve been telling me to ‘stop now’ for years. I’m not gonna stop now.” Auntie Sheryl. You deserved this moment.
I had to cry on that one. This has been the best winning moment in a long time. To see Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tony winner, receive her flowers after all these years. It is truly a blessing. I have been waiting for this one. She gave the best speech. I love it.
So well deserved! This legend is one of the best actors alive. This voice should have many many statues, but I'm glad she has this one finally! CONGRATS QUEEN!!
YESSS!!!! So well deserved!!! Wish I'd seen it live, but so grateful I could view it on RU-vid. I've been an admirer of Ms. Sheryl Lee Ralph from her Dream Girls years. She is an artist, indeed, who takes her craft very seriously. She ALWAYS represents the culture in a dignified manner. She gives Abbott Elementary that extra "sparkle" that only a seasoned veteran can give. Congratulations, Ms. Ralph!!!
This is how you do an acceptance speech! I keep re-watching not just for her whole thing but also to look at the people around her cheering her on. Love it.
Wow that was one of the most moving award speeches I have ever seen. The conviction and command she held despite the overwhelming emotions she must have felt. I cried really. It was a beautiful witnessing of a human singing and praising this moment with all their might and heart.
The Jefferson’s, Dream Girls, Designing Women, Sister Act 2, Moesha! Just to name a few! Mother has been working for years! WELL DESERVED AND LONG AWAITED! I love you Mrs.Ralph 🏆❤️🙌🏾
She is SO deserving of this honor!! She is a true class act, talented, regal and a legend in her own right! I also love that Quinta Brunson’s show is getting the recognition that it deserves! This is fabulous. Black Excellence at its best!❤️❤️❤️
This is one of the best moments in the Emmys. Sheryl Lee was so stunned and so shocked and then when she collected herself. She bought down the house. I had tears streaming down my face. She had that look of "OMG did i just win," She is 65 or 66 and still very stunning to look at. Sheryl Lee owned that night.
As a new teacher, she hits me like that, even out of character. She is a blessed inspiration, and her decades of hard work mean so much to me. Congratulations. Infinitely deserved.
This is amazing. I love how she shouted out Quinta. She really is great and assembled an amazing cast. Awesome show. Well deserved honor. Her singing was on point! I love it.
Long overdue! 😍 Sheryl Lee Ralph was always one of my favorite TV moms (Dee on Moesha). Talented, gorgeous, and as authentic as they come! Congrats, queen! 👸🏾
Sheryl Lee Ralph's parents were good friends with my grandmother. If she was still alive today, she would be extremely proud. We had Christmas dinner at her house one year, I think in 1997, when she was in Jamaica with her parents. My cousins were so shocked when she greeted my grandmother with a big hug and kiss on the cheek. "You know Moesha's mom?" It was hilarious.
I'm glad the television academy saw how well she transformed into that character. She really created a well thought out characterization. Her character wasn't the flashiest but her character had so many layers and facets that is incredible work for an actress
We’re all crying, right?? She is unbelievable!!! She is absolutely stunning on the show and deserved the win, but I love that she showcased her singing talent during this acceptance speech!!
She has one of the prettiest smiles ever.. She deserved that..She's been in the business for so long..Got ripped off of any royalties from Broadway's Dreamgirls...❤❤❤❤
She have me a 23 year old male crying cause I have watched her from moesha and on even before mo show she has literally been in this game for a very long time and I’m just sooo happy to see MY BLACK PPL WINNING 🏆 🎉❤
This is the best acceptance speech in the history of acceptance speeches, I've seen it so many times and I cry every time like it's the first time 😂😂❤️❤️❤️
Whew…this had me in tears! She has ALWAYS been absolutely beautiful and regal to me! I love her in AE and I’m so happy she’s finally being recognized for her years of talent! 😍😍👏🏽👏🏽🥰🥰.
The crazy part about this is that she was just happy to finally be nominated after such a long and accomplished career. You can tell from her reaction she wasn’t expecting to win 😢 I grew watching Sheryl Lee Ralph and I teared up watching this moment because nobody deserves it more ❤💐👑
@@Idontwannaknowu23 yeah, her dad was also bad, Frank was sexcist and horrible to Moesha, then there was that plot twist where he was someone's father & not uncle
I am in tears...my pores raised.... its the same feeling i felt when seeing Halle as Ariel... Black women doing black women things. One of the bestttt acceptance speeches I have ever seen. Congratulations. Most well deserved. Keep making space for us
This is the best acceptance speech ever!! They should give her a second Emmy for this speech alone! I got chills, I was mesmerized, I fell in love with her personality even more! So well deserved BRAVO!
This is what being unproblematic and kind to people looks like. Closer to 70 than 60 and still running laps around people half her age in terms of looks, poise and stamina. So we’ll deserved. SLR is an ICON.
I'm 44 and it's the same for me. I couldn't believe she had never won an Emmy before. With all the incredible roles she's played over the years, that's absolutely ridiculous.
I’m not crying. Your crying. It’s so important for elders to get greater representation in media. So much wisdom to share and it makes the world a better place when all generations are seen.
So long overdue! Sheryl Lee Ralph's talent is simply undeniable. Whether it's playing Dena in the original Broadway cast of "Dreamgirls" or playing opposite Denzel Washington in "The Mighty Quinn", her range and depth of her body of work is awesome! And sang her acceptance speech in perfect pitch. You go, diva!
This was a complete beautiful moment and we all felt it and we were able to celebrate with her! She soaked in the entire moment and this is exactly how you ACCEPT an award! God Bless Her! She got her flowers!!! Amen soul mama!!! 😀
I've been watching this lady in TV & movies my entire life and she's finally getting recognized for her talents. As a side note: I saw her in real life and she is stunningly beautiful. Go Sheryl Lee Ralph!🌸
Yes! Mine as well. It was a great 80’s show. I told my daughter I used to watch her as a little girl growing up. She was the only woman of color and was PHENOMENAL; with those iconic dimples. Lol.
@@cuteynurse305 . It was in the group of 3 comedies Bill Cosby & Sidney Poitier did together. 'Uptown Saturday Night, Let's Do It Again '& "A Piece of the Action.
Well deserved... I still remember her from Sister Act 2, a small yet impactful role she played as Rita's (Lauren Hill) mother. Finally receiving the recognition she deserves!!
This woman has been impossibly beautiful for almost twice as long as I have been on this Earth. I am glad she finally received her flowers in this forum.
I'm just seeing this, and I was completely in tears. She had no idea she was going to win. Sure, she was nominated but has been overlooked so many times. I didn't even know she played Dina in Dream Girls. And OH MY GOSH, how she burst in song. I never heard an acceptance speech that touching. I hope we all feel that feeling of being boticed and appreciated 👏
Congratulations Ms Ralph! Well deserved. You were invited to the Emmys for the first time. I once heard you say you never got an invite Well tonight you were not only invited, You won.
Amen!!!!!! man closes one door but God opens all doors in His time. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!! Praying for all of us in the mighty name of Jesus Christ Amen.
YOU CAN TELL SHE WASNT EXPECTING THAT WIN HELL I STARTED CRYING AND AT 65 MISS SHERYL LEE RALPH IS STILL GORGEOUS A CLASS ACT AND A LADY✅💜💜💜💜 CONGRATULATIONS 👏🏾
This was probably the most magnificent acceptance speech ever made!!! My goosebumps have goosebumps!!! I’ve always loved her, but wow just wow!! And as a “older” woman myself, this gives me such hope for my own dreams!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤❤
She's come such a long way since Dreamgirls..She's paid Her Dues twice over and this is so well deserved..I'm filled with glee. Powerful moment here. At 56 I'm even more inspired to continue to push forward and pursue My dreams and never give up..Cause I I'm like an endangered Species as well..I will keep striving til I can't..Dont give up My Beloveds..❤❤
You could tell she was so full of emotion and joy but how? How did you gather all of that? To do what you did? Like I'm surprised they were dry eyes in the audience. And I know she's been a performer practically her entire life but still? To bring that and share that with us. This is a moment that will go down as one of the best acceptance speeches of all time.
