Oregon coast surf fishing for BIG surf perch, covering my surf perch fishing setup and what in my opinion is the best bait for surfperch fishing. There are a variety of surfperch fishing rigs but my favorite surf perch fishing setup is definitely the high-low rig. There is a bunch of different baits that can be used for surf fishing as well, but in this location that i am fishing there is one surfperch bait that is free and is very productive when it comes to catching surf perch, and that's Razor clams!
I arrived on the coast around noon which was right around peak low tide. Instead of jumping right into fishing, i decided to take advantage of the low tide and do some clamming considering how amazing this bait is when it comes to catching surfperch. I quickly found the clams that i needed and jumped into surf fishing the incoming tide. The bite was slow in the first two sets of waves but the third set showed evidence of a sandbar. This meant that i was gonna really have to blast my gear out much further, so i decided to go with my bigger surf fishing setup which is my 12ft Okuma Rockaway rod and used an extra ounce of weight to make the distance.
In no time fish were hitting with every cast, this lasted a good hour before the fish moved on, but in this time i managed to catch the biggest surf perch that i've caught to date.. coming in at 16" with a little bit of room for argument lol... you will see in the video that i measured from the mouth to the fork in the tail... leaving about another 1/4-1/2" of length.... either way it was a big surfperch and it definitely made my day. Most of the other fish i caught that day were average size so i didn't leave EVERY catch on this video, just enough to keep it entertaining.
