Another quarantine project done. Starrett surface gauge style. Hope you guys enjoy the video. As always, thanks for watching. Thanks for your support: / calem21
I think when you show a couple of mistakes or problems along the way to making something so well made it makes you seem as if you are nearly as imperfect as those of us watching you. Talent is often the drive to keep working until you achieve the result that you want. Never ever give up.
It takes 'patience' to work through one's failures. It takes 'skill' to manipulate the medium into the desired shape. It takes 'artistry' to see the finished product before even starting. You sir have all three...amazing skills.
This is gorgeous work! Thanks for taking the time to share, and PLEASE keep making new stuff - so very cool to see someone making so many high quality tools themselves and repurposing things along the way that would otherwise be thrown out.
Well, one thing I’ve learned from this video! After careful consideration on the investment in machinery, tools, and supplies… let me get back to my search for a decent used surface gage!
This is a wonderful example of your growing knowledge and skill, thank you for sharing. You have a gift and I am so gland about that. The new camera positions and shutter speeds are great too. Keep exploring the possibilities. Kindest regards and best wishes from Dublin, Ireland.
As always, it is a treat to watch you do your thing, and it's amazing what you can do with what you have on hand. Keep putting up all your wonderful content for us to enjoy!!
I love your vids man! You quickly went from some dude tinkering in his garage to a precision machinist nearly overnight. You seriously don’t understand how impressive a lot of the stuff you do is. I’ve been a machinist for a few years and I’m still in awe of a lot of your work! Please keep the toolmaking videos coming, not enough RU-vid machinists do fun to watch toolmaking. Videos like yours are what inspires people to join the trade and keeps manual machining alive! Next time try making a cylindrical grinding jig. You have all the tools necessary to make one and you certainly have the skill. And as of now only 1 big you tuber has made one, Stefan. He’s big league, I wanna see you there too!
Another great video! I’m not even a machinist but I love watching you work! You have a resourcefulness in your approach that is refreshing. It’s great to watch you repurpose old metal and refurbish old machines... Cheers 🍻 brother!
Don’t have the tool I need, but I do have a lathe, I can make one!! It’s gonna be amazing to see what you come up with over the course of the next 10 to 20 years! Your talent is equal to Tom Lipton, Robin Renzetti, and Stephon Gottswinter!
Utterly incredible ! Thankyou for sharing this beautiful build. How you turned the shaft so precisely without using a rest I cannot magine ! You are on your way towards robin and stefans level. Fantastic craftsmanship.
Off the charts my friend. It is so grate to see you doing such fine work. You have come so far since i first watched you work on your first lathe. With no tools to speak of. Now look at you go.. god bless and keep up the grate work
A tip for those small easy to bend parts, take a piece of aluminum and drill and tap a hole for that thread, screw it in tight and it won’t bend, it can still shear so to mitigate that, bore a small shoulder that the knurled section fits tightly into, this will take all the tangential load off the threaded section and save you so much frustration
Nice work mate, especially the pad design on the underside of the base and making your own tap. As an old machinist I do enjoy seeing your good skills at work...and a Ronnie van Zant fan as well! :)
Ca Lem is very a very resourceful man. I admire his attention to detail. When I first came across a video of his, I was impressed so I was checking out his channel and all it said was Simple Man " be something you can love and understand" Lynyrd Skynyrd.
You absolutely never cease to amaze us all with your skills Ca Lem. Yet another brilliant piece of work! Skilfully designed beautifully executed. Keep on the way you are going and you will be one of the worlds best hands on machinist. So glad I subscribed 18 months ago, I've enjoyed every last video you have uploaded.
This illustrates the dangers of letting an artist play with machine tools... it raises the bar to an unfair level. I was perfectly happy with my surface gauge before, now I guess I'll just melt it down and take up golf.
As soon as I saw the vice chucks at the end, i thought this might be a side channel of his.....like an alter-ego or something, lol Either way, can't wait to watch through some of this guy's videos.
