Thank you for showing people how to NOT STRIP SCREWS. Every time I'm working on a clients laptop with stripped screws, its such a PITA to find workarounds to get the screw out. Great guide, keep it up.

Is there a way to install a thermal pad and heat dissipating bracket with the new SSD? I notice that high performance SSDs generate a lot of heat.

What ssd did you install ? what's the recommendation here ?
@rohitkapadi3221

hey, I followed your video properly and made sure to tighten every screw. After changing SSD and doing a clean windows 11 install. I realized if I shake my laptop, it gives me blue boot error and I have to keep it stable and do no move so it can boot up. Does that mean something's loose?
@cbutters
@cbutters 4 месяца назад
Yes, that sounds like something could be loose, could also be coincidence, but since every SSD is slightly different, might be worth it to use a pad or thicker pad to make sure it is securely in place before re-closing the machine up.

@@cbutters yes, might be. To be sure it’s not software, I did reset my windows again but still same. Im using WD_BLACK 1TB SN850X NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen4 PCIe, M.2 2280, Up to 7,300 MB/s - WDS100T2X0E

It sounds like the tiger lake CPU has four gen four lanes dedicated to the 3050 TI and the rest of it was decided to use a Gen 3 SSD storage controller for anyone that is upgrading the NVME. I'm still curious if anyone put a Gen 4 SSD and also put a gen 3 SSD and posts any more than a 10% difference in speed? But of course putting in a Western digital black SN770 would be far better than the stock drive in this computer. Probably two times to 2.5X as fast
@lukep4714
@lukep4714 7 месяцев назад
I've seen videos where the controller is a gen 3 NVME and someone puts a Gen 4 NVME and they get about 400 to 500 megabytes per second Faster read and write speed then gen 3 ssd even though advertised Gen 4 speed should be 6500MB/s 6950MB/s - basically they would get 3,500 and 3,000 instead of 2500 and 3,000 on a gen 3 controller

Does opening it up void the warranty? I want to do this too

Opening it doesn't void the warranty... breaking anything on the inside might though, so be careful... XD

Great video and great job explaining this repair. I am ashamed at Microsoft for putting such a cheap SSD in these computers from the factory. Anyway: does the slot support PCIe gen 4 or just gen 3?
@lukep4714
@lukep4714 Год назад
I actually just read somewhere, it is a gen 3 ssd support only, so 3000mb write and 3500mb read, better than I think the original 512gb SSD is 1200 write and 2500 read or less.

@@LG-zd1gzI just found a thread on a support document that said the Intel tiger lake CPU has its four Gen 4 lanes strictly for the dedicated 3050 TI and that leaves the gen 3 lanes to the SSD sadly

@@LG-zd1gz I really want to like Microsoft products, but when stuff like this happens, it’s really sad as a person who wants them to have some good products to combat apple with just shoot themselves in the foot by limiting the user experiences with hardware and software limits. Don’t they know we already will use their products and services and then they want to charge you extra for an SSD or disable opening it up like the surface book devices. 😮‍💨

I have both a question and a comment, I’ll start with the question then and post them separately. Oh, the question is a two-parter. Okay so. Why didn’t you clone the SSD before you started? An NVMe enclosure is only around $15, the time saved alone would be worth it. I’ve had mine almost a year so huge pain to start from scratch. Also, I read on the Microsoft site that when replacing the SSD you need to replace it with the same size currently installed. Now is this just them saying something meaningless or can this cause a problem? Considering all the other stuff they did when they built it (see comment) I wouldn’t be surprised. I hate to have to take it apart and reassemble it twice. Anyway, thanks for the video it’s well made, and I like what you did with the sticker.
@cbutters

I do have a bunch of NVME enclosures and all that. I even have one of the most popular guides on youtube for cloning hard drives with clonezilla; however in this Instance I didn't bother cloning because I believe the SLS it was "new to me" so I wasn't loosing much setup. Even so sometimes I also just personally like starting out with a new machine fresh. But I'm a cursed PC user in that I spend more time tweaking and setting up than I do actually USING my computer :).

I clone a ton of SSDs in my job. The SSD does not need to be replaced with same storage size. Smaller or even same size could potentially cause problems. Rule of thumb is always go from smaller to bigger.

This is the comment that goes with the question, confusing I see that now. So roughly speaking the i7, with RX3050 Ti, 16 GB RAM, and 512 SSD started at $2,100. Whereas the one with 32 GB RAM and 2 TB SSD was $3,100. So, if my math is correct, that's a thousand dollars difference. So, a grand more for what would cost less than $200 to buy separately and upgrade yourself? That and they're Microsoft, I'd be SO very interested to know the actual cost difference to build them. I'm willing to wager it was less than $100. The people who are going to drop over two thousand dollars on a laptop only to take it apart right after buying it are few and far between. Why prevent us from doing what we want with our stuff? The weight, it's a heavy laptop to be sure but I don't even care about that. I would honestly stick with it as I love the device, but I don't think I'm going to get a Studio when I upgrade. It's an amazingly well-built machine but it would have made no difference if the memory was removable. WHY Microsoft WHY? Always two steps forward ten steps back.

Yes and no. I get the sentiment but I didn't even realise they were stickers until now watching this video. Just having a look at my original studio and there is no indication they are stickers so they must be doing their job pretty well.
