EPISODE 30.
This episode we develop some jigs and tables that will help the framing process go faster. The surface planing jig uses a large power plane to make one face of a piece of timber completely straight. A large assembly table lets us put frames together far more easily and accurately. Pancho observes, and tries to resist destroying the new frames!
This episode is early because I won’t be able to post next weekend.

Isn't it wonderful that so many people can be drawn to help make the build happen. This is community (of helpers) in truth.

Just coming to this vid series. Now I am up to episode 30. I am blown away. The people: so many young handsome women and men with intelligence and old farts like me who care, the tech, the parrot, the dogs, the history...just amazing. Spending my Xmas vacation watching this. I grew up on a Gaff Rig Ketch built in 1932 so I know this life. Not in it anymore but it is in my blood

A big shout-out to Kurt, jig-maker extraordinaire. He significantly streamlined some very time-consuming processes, and improved the finished product as well. As always, excellent video story-telling, Leo. You must spend almost as much time editing as you do in the build. Brilliant! THANKS!!!

I watched Leo with Tally Ho soon after he started, and I have re-watched the series (skipping bits) a couple of times now. The present is October 20223 and Leo must have dreamed of the day that Tally Ho in in one piece and waterproof. that is where he is now, Tally Ho is about to get her mast stepped. I think watching these early episodes that he is a really special person. the videos right from the very beginning were quality watchable masterpieces. But it is his vision that one has to admire so much, as well as his dedication, right from the very start to QUALITY. This channel is what RU-vid has enabled! Keep it up Leo. I am so glad the world has supported you. 463k subscribers now.

Leo, don't lose Kurt. There's your process engineer; a valuable team member on any project of this magnitude. Those tables are excellent, now you need a drill press and a few ships augers for the black locust. Cheers !!

These labour saving tables are a good investment. Just one hint, if your melamine and oil sliding surfaces get worn, cut up some cheap plastic nylon kitchen chopping boards as sliding surfaces. They last longer and are even slicker, and they don't curl up and die when the rain gets on them.

Used in sawmills as Hi-Moly (HPDE). Comes in lots of dimensions (sheets, long stock etc). Several different 'grades' White, Green, Black (levels of hardness). Lining chain-ways, lumber stops etc etc. If you can find a sawmill... they usually have some 'worn-out' stock available.

It's funny how obvious something like that planing jig is, AFTER someone else thinks of it. Brilliant idea Kurt. So you need 88 frames, How many pieces are in each frame? It looks like 6 - 10 separate pieces of wood. That's a lot of planing, the new jig should knock off many man-hours of work!

@Rockan5986
@Rockan5986 5 лет назад
A stationary planer will only make one surface parallel to the opposite surface. If the table-side surface is uneven, the cut-side surface will be uneven. That's why they have to hand plane the first side, because it's roughsawn wood.
@markbernier8434
@markbernier8434 5 лет назад
Correct, the tool mentioned is exactly like the one in use but larger. It is a beast freehand but the table and carriage rig would make it easy to use.

@4stringmanagmaildcom

I helped build the Sta 10 frames. One side (right) was 5 pieces. The other (left) was 4 if my memory is correct. He's doing the frames in the center of the boat to start with so they are the largest (longest) that will be built. As he works his way fore and aft they will be smaller so there will probably be less pieces. He may be able to make the smallest out of just two pieces trunnelled together.

Jigs, templates and custom patterns are as much the bones of a shipyard as it's tools. It's soul is the experiened craftsmen. Once Tally Ho is back in the water, hopefully all the tooling and jigs can be shipped back to the UK along with Tally Ho, or find it's way to a local West Coast boatyard. It would be a crime against the Seas to just destroy it all once she's finished. ...And many thanks to your hosts for the use of that wonderfully-equipped shop.

Hello Leo, To improve the planner, i propose a little tuning : To tune the hight of the planer , in only one time, you can join all the screws with a T5 belt and Pulleys. When you turn a screws, all the 4 are turning at one time, to save time and keep precision Up or Down of the tickness of the position of the planner, kepping it always in the same plan ;) thanks 4 sharing your videos :) Best regards Denis

maybe you could use some bright color spray paint as a guide coat when planing the wood, run the planer across the timber til all the paint is gone, then you can see instantly when its flat. but i guess you can see it on the texture of the wood anyways. just a tip, have done it sometimes and its pretty useful. thanks for all the awesome videos of your great project, and good luck with all the hard work!

I made a much smaller jig for a planning and solved the hight adjustment by using a wedge that would lift. That placed the adjustemt as a knob, out of the way, at the side of the jig I used a threaded rod to move the wedge and it was not effected by vibrations from the planner.

What is remarkable is that these boats were never built to last 100 yrs. They, and especially the Victorian Age warships with their Baroque decorations had expected service lives of 20- 30 yrs. and the builders knew it. They just took that much pride in workmanship and the finished product that they endured into the age of marginal costs, disposable consumerism....
