If only we knew how blessed we were to have this kind of music playing on our radios back then.... We were already happy....but we would have been ecstasy knowing that we better enjoy it now...cause its wont last long into the year 2000...smh Brings a whole new meaning to Prince song "1999" We were blessed beyond measures to have grown up in the 70s, 80s and 90s 🙏
This is still one of the coolest songs that I have ever heard. The laid back beat, the lush background vocal, the way that the lead Bernard Jackson and Regina Belle put it down up front, this song is a masterpiece in it's own right. Like another commenter on this page said, music will never be this way again. Thankfully, we have the internet with sites like RU-vid, Rhapsody, etc., that allows us to go back and listen to those wonderful songs of yesteryear. I am very thankful for that:)
This song was one of the biggest R&B hit singles of 1989 and you can tell by listening to it on CD or by seeing this video. The thing is, R&B music fans loved Surface from 1986 to 1990, it was them pop music lovers and non-R&B music fans who didn't understand or give Surface their due praise from 1986 to 1990. Whoever brought Surface's music in that 1986 to 1990 period or requested their songs on radio stations around the country in that period, THANK YOU💯%!!!
Ummm they had 2 top 5 singles on the pop charts. "The First Time" hit #1 on the pop chart & "Shower Me With Your Love" went top 5 and we're huge hits on the Adult Contemporary chart as well. a couple others hit the top 40. I think there were some pop fans who loved their songs too. Remember back then alot of people listened to other kinds of music on the low
@@MorrisB1971 I know they had those hits, shoot, I've listened backwards and forwards to Surface (1986), 2nd Wave (1988) and just finished 3 Deep (1990) a week ago. I studied the heck out of all three of those albums, including RIAA sales, music charts, and etc. What I was saying was that even though they had all those hit singles you mentioned and that I know about, it was those singles people mainly assigned to them. People outside of the R&B crowd didn't care about their non singles or non-hits or their full albums, they just wanted the hits. Go on RU-vid and other social media platforms and see discussions about Surface's full albums or non singles, and you'll see that people will keep bringing up Shower Me with Your Love, Closer than Friends, Only You Can Make Me Happy, and The First Time. I think you misunderstood the point I was trying to make about the public in Surface's prime period, critics, and etc. not truly appreciating the musicianship of the group outside of their hits. David Conley was a stone-cold musician, especially with them keyboards, the flute and other instruments he used.
James Henderson .......yes the land-line phone...Lol.....fall asleep with the phone cord all tangled up. Lol....you hang up....no you hang up first.....let's just hang up at the same time....naw let's just talk until we get tired. ahhh the good old days.
James Henderson Right I was in my teenage in mid 80s used to be on the date with my boyfriend and on the phone all night about the hours on the top of hours until my daddy made me hang up the phone 😂😂😂
It's the lack of respect we have for ourselves as women so it becomes easy for a man to have the same lack of respect for us women. Back then women valued themselves and men did too 🤷 '75 baby so I've seen the drastic turnaround unfortunately
@@godsblessing73 As a Man I can say that (WE) have failed as The Provider, not just financially, but Spiritually, Mentally, and Socially... we can't even hold a deep conversation anymore because we're judged by standards before we even get the opportunity to be known... I'm out of Breath now..😁
God knew what he was doing when he created black people because we are truly special. My black people never forget no offense to the other races. But black people we are the chosen one's
@@godfreybegumisa1560 I heard one had passed away, but I didn't know the other one went blind. Had sad! Love this group. This era of music has still some of the best music ever.
💫✨ @ernestkalunga1294, I need a thesaurus, 📕 📚 a dictionary, SOMEthing to describe the profound respect I have for your wonderful comment about your wife ; this may sound corny, but that was just plain old nice and it made my day! I wish You and your Wife many, many, many happy years in life together and in love with each other! 🎉💞 🫂
I always felt Regina Belle did a fascinating beautiful soulful sultry job in You Are My Everything, also. She didn't do too much, just flowed like poetry, :)
WOW!!!. talk about memories man, now this is music, if they only had radio stations that played more of this, i believe our kids would be all the better for it. reminds me of cruisin with the homies. just chillin. no drive bys. no gangster rap. just the good ol sugar hill gang. 😊
I'm 38 also 80s baby and this was the best music to come up on 🥂💯🔥 my son is 9 years old and I let him listen to this kind of stuff instead of the bull crap they have out now
They were peaceful positive guys singing good chill music, nothing showy,no lies, nothing forceful to listeners just music to allow sip in one’s mind body and entire system and stay their. Gr8 stuff indeed
A #1 hit for Surface on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 657th #1 R&B song of the Rock Era. We prepare to say goodbye to the 1980's and welcome in the 1990's. In this year, 1989, Billboard began publishing a new chart, the Rap Charts, as the music industry was finally acknowledging rap as a legitimate type of music. What will the R&B scene be like in the new decade? Stay tuned.
Music at this compacity is unheard of in this day and time. Making is smooth to tell the your lady how she truly makes you feel. Allowing yourself to feel something for someone even when you do know if hurt will come along with it. Real R&B has brought so many cultures of people closer together. Peace to real R&B!
