Love your presentation of information and video. I fish hybrids in western PA but definitely want to start getting to the coast for the real deal. I will get the book and get schooled up as I utilize fishing in my work with veterans. Thanks for an excellent video!
Lots of good info, as usual. BTW, I have had a hook buried in my finger trying to lip an engergetic Calico Bass.......It is a moment you will not forget..... I have the Boga Grips, but still lip some.....never said I was too smart.
Great vid as always dude! I find those plugs are made great never needed to load I just go 5-6-7" and the cast like rockets was out deep ehn you need it. I do remove the center hook, take out the front ring and use a single 6/0 3x siwash on the rear. Great for blues more so cause there cheap and take a beating so long you dont bang them hard on the rocks during furious fishing. Thanks for sharing as always!
Awesome i am yet to try using this surface plugs here in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. I caught a 50.1 pound striper on August 17th 4:30 Am on the surf here and got very addicted to striper fishing since, i enjoy watching your videos. I also started a log book in catching these monster fish as well as the schoolies which range in the 10 - 15 pound range.
I hear you on getting hooked trying to do a release, it just happened to me today and I had to drive to home depot with the treble hook and lure stuck in my finger. Always keep a decent pair of heavy duty edge pliers/cutters in your car for WHEN you will get stuck with a hook.
John, have you tried any glow in the dark baits for stripers in the surf during low light/no light conditions? We use them extensively at night for targeting spawning fall salmon in the Great Lakes and they do a pretty good job at generating strikes.
Many thanks for posting your very informative videos. Question regarding your custom rod: Why did you cut the blank down from 10 ft to 9 ft? You stated in other videos you reduced the length at the butt end, so presumably there was little if any affect on the action of the rod. Seems to me you are making a trade-off between rod weight vs. casting distance/leverage. Is that the goal?
John, Thanks again for the great videos. Shortened my learning curve considerably. My question is, do you ever worry about spooking the fish that "might" be present with the "splashing and thrashing" (Clyde Frazier type quote, hahaha) of a pencil popper?
Do you ever pause the retrieve at all..? Over in Ireland a lot of bass guys will retrieve for 10 seconds, pause for 10 etc.. Not something I have done in the past but will be looking to in future as a lot of bass taking when the plug has stopped.
Mr. Skinner, going to CBBT area to fish for striper, will be my first ever. I will be in a friend's boat, however, I am wanting to know if I will catch stripers from the surf in the Cape Charles or Kiptopeake area, as well as the islands of the CBBT. What is your opinion and recommendation? I will be using your videos for reference.
Great videos and slightly jealous our bass in Britain don't get as big as yours. I like the idea of adding weight to the lure but doesn't the water rust the bearings in the lure? might adding oil instead be a better idea?
Mr. Skinner, I find you to be a great fisherman. Here's my question, why load the lure with water when you can load it with bb's? That's what I would do.............
Do you ever have any issues with the Stealth braid? I have found it to be thicker than the average 30 pound braided line. I am spooling a couple reels with it for the season and I heard that it's too stiff at first but it gets very soft and turns in to the perfect line. Thanks.
Hi John. Just wondering why you are bothering to stand on the small rock? Is it to get better distance or to be up out of the water. Looks like a small rock so it can’t be that tall.
John Thanks for your calm and confident video style. Question on loading these poppers (and minnow plugs )...where the heck does a non -drug addict get a hypodermic syringe with needle? I'm serious... we can't get these at a tackle shop or the drug store. PS... enjoying your new book.
I keep on having problems with the bass pushing my surface lures into the air and therefore they keep on missing the bait. What can I do to stop that from happening so that they would actually bite into the lure instead of pushing it away or into the air? This is my biggest problem with fishing surface lures!
Hey John, @4:25 you said you are "gauging where you want to cast the lure." What exactly were you looking for or gauging? And what's your go to lure for the spring run? Great videos!
Devin Shave Yes they are very predictable and responsive so you dont need a visual once you work them a bit and get familiar with there action out of the box
Hey John huge fan of your videos. I live in Connecticut and I never caught a stripper, wen is the best time for them and were can I go?? How do I look for them
Right now they are migrating through Long Island Sound. Your local beaches should give you a shot. Most times, they'll be no sign of fish. Small bucktails and tins are good on these schoolie bass.
alex amico sure you can but big time with the bombers actually the sp's cast well as is and really no need just size up unless you need a deeper runing action with the SP minnow
You need a PVC pipe angle cut driven into the sand, in the water or beach. Excellent to place the rod after a catch. I have left them all over the place, buried in sand dunes etc.
Great videos as always!! So here I am going crazy chasing just 1 legal size striper this season throwing every type of striper candy lure on beach boat and jetty...Nothing! So after visiting my local Asian supermarket and low and behold the answer... Tons of 12 inch stripers! And they want to increase the size of stripers next year???? It is all clear to me now, time to return my striper lures for a refund! Are you getting me?
We get farmed bass over here in the uk. Their snouts appear to be slightly more pointed Han wild fish. If you are in doubt try buyin one and checking the stomach contents. If you find crab and baitfish its likely to be wild! I you suspect shops are selling undersize fish then report them to your local trading governing body! ;)
