Surfski How to Fix Imbalances in your Paddling Stroke

How to fix imbalances in your surfski stroke. Most people are typically stronger and have better developed fine motor control skills on one side. It's something that happens quite naturally as we learn to write, pick up/put things down, and play ball sports. We develop skills unilaterally, generally favouring one side, and then when we need to do a bilateral sport like paddling where both sides need to function equally, we tend to find that one side works a little more easily than the other.
In this video we would like to try and help you identify if you have an imbalance in your paddle stroke. When we paddle it's often hard to measure and notice subtle differences with our left vs right paddle stroke, without the use of videos, a technique coach on-hand, or specific testing apparatus.
On the water:
One of Durban's famous coaches Lee McGregor always promotes paddling on one side at a time, during his technique sessions. Doing this so many times with him a few years ago, made me pay a lot of attention to the speed I could hold on my left vs right paddle stroke. Here's what to do for this simple drill: paddle 10 strokes on just your right side, dragging the paddle back on top of the water before placing the next catch, then repeat 10 strokes on the left side, then complete 20 strokes (counting each side) paddling both sides together as normal.
What we recommend paying attention to:
1) Look at your speed during the 10 on the right and 10 on the left - is the speed the same or does one side show higher speed?
2) Feel - do you feel less balanced or shaky or battle to place the catch more on one side vs the other side?
3) Connection - can you see or feel that your body moves better or connects better on one side vs the other?
If you can notice differences with any of the above when comparing left vs right then the chances are you have an imbalance. Now if we can't paddle 'even' strokes when we are going slowly on a nice calm day, how are we going to do it at race pace when we are bleeding lactate and fighting for the win? Imagine the compensation patterns and 'bad habits' we are constantly reinforcing every time we paddle. So our goal is to try and help you to even out that imbalance in the hope to have a better stroke and be more efficient in the long run.
Gym strength endurance tests:
1) The first gym test you can do targets the level of strength / conditioning of the chest and anterior shoulder: single arm chest press using a dumbbell
2) Choose a weight that you believe your dominate side can handle for 15 to 20 reps and perform one set on your dominant side noting your perception of how difficult it feels to move that weight for 15 to 20 reps and how good your control of the weight is throughout each rep; then repeat on the non-dominant side and compare how each side felt. And maybe you won't actually be able to comfortably complete an equal number of reps on both sides which will also indicate a strength and / or endurance deficit between the two.
This video is step one of helping you firstly identify if you may have an imbalance in your stroke, and then one gym based option to help further confirm or identify an imbalance.

MikeSch, Haley your physical training and tips for paddlers are very helpful for me I just took delivery of a new V9. Its my first ski and as I had imagined it was going to be a challenge, Ive been in it 3 times in the last week and am progressing, from 50% absolutely upside down first day to third day yesterday in smoother water able to deep water remount (just) and paddling into a 5 -10 klm wind turning across wind and down wind. Confidence building slowly. Watching and learning from your training videos. Im 70 next month and require a lot of rebuilding after years of neglect. Thankyou.

Excellent presentation. All that under 5 minutes. Third time that I have looked at this video. Was not an issue in the past, so I thought. Until the new boat came along, is a lot faster, it does highlight all the imbalances🤣. Was already unknowingly addressing the problem (this morning) till everything was fast n smooth after 7kms on the river,,,,, as you can hear the air being suck into the bailer below your feet. Am 61 and really enjoying paddling and appreciate your tutorials. Thanks for Lismore NSW Australia

Hi, I am a newby to the surfski sport made transition from Standup paddle boarder. . I love your video's. Just before Christmas I received my first Surfski and I am hooked. My left is definetly the weaker side. Your this video is definetly helpful and I can work with it in the gym. :-)

Thank you for this advice. Especially in my 560 I tilt much more to the left during a stroke, and in choppy condition thats the side I'd go for a swim. Makes me have to concentrate, which takes up quite some energy too.

DM with Karl suggested that I check out your channel and I'm glad he did. Very good videos. New subscriber here and I'll be watching your other productions as time permits. Greetings from Satellite Beach, Florida.

@@hayleynixon307 Sounds good. I'm in Central Florida on the East Coast. It's a very good area for paddle sports but all of Florida is good actually. The southern portion of the state has endless marshes and mangrove islands to explore. The central part has jungle, creeks, and many lakes. The north has all the beautiful springs and a lot of great rivers like the Suwannee, Chipola, Apalachicola, Econfina, and Choctawhatchee. Florida has 166 Wildlife Management Areas, numerous state parks, and the largest wilderness in the Eastern U.S.A. (Everglades). I don't know what time of year you plan to visit but keep in mind water levels fluctuate at an almost unbelievable amount in many waterways depending on the time of year. There are great places to paddle in August that are bone dry in January. Take care.

Thank you for this video! In my case, even though I am a lefty, I think I engage much better my right side than my left one (core). I find the single bench press exercises that you demonstrated extremely useful, however, the single-arm rowing-pulls have worked a bit better for me because they engage my obliques better and mimic the motion of paddling on a surfski a bit better than the bench press -

i am confused- my stronger side is right but my dominant side [the one I prefer mounting/bracing/holding a shovel/ paddle in a canoe/shooting a rifle/kicking a ball] is left...

Yep... this happens and I'd be hard pressed to have the exact answer. Maybe a bit ambidextrous? Or you just nurtured your fine motor control on the left but your physical strength on the right. Either way, we can work to try even the two out ;-)

never did I think about doing speed comparisons left vs right (mind blown, how stupid simple)
