I'm a nanorebel cause I have not written anything in two years, since my granny who was my number one fan died, but I really felt that I am ready to get back to writing and I started something absolutely new, just for fun. I was scared of 50 000, I have two (going to be three next week) part-time jobs and I'm still at university also trying to care for my physical health so I set my goal to 25 000. And my gosh it's going so well! I love that my passion came back to me, I love that I'm doing it without pressure but also I can be in this wonderful, motivating community. It's just wonderful and I encourage everyone who is scared to try or near giving up - just think about that how you love what you're doing, if you want a break, take a break but get back after couple of days, don't push yourself too hard. We will manage! PS Excuse my english please, it's not my first language and belive me I know my first language better for sake of my writing xD
I have a friend who, without fail, writes over 150k EVERY NaNoWriMo. Camps included. I can’t even fathom pushing that hard. I’m still sitting around 10k, but it’s been a good writing month after not writing at all for a few months, so I’m good!
I didn't want to do NaNo this year with all the upheaval in my life. Felt pressure to do NaNo anyway because I always at least TRY so I set a modest goal. But haven't written a word. I've re-read what I wrote in last year's NaNo and see all the edits I need to do but have written nary a word. But I silently cheer you all on from the shadows ✊
Super excited for your Nano Episode tonight, will stay up until 4 am for that! Luckily I write best at night and can sleep in tomorrow, haha Liebe Grüße aus Österreich, und vielen Dank für die vielen tollen Videos :D Manchmal höre ich deine Videos im Hintergrund, wenn ich schreibe (die die ich schon kenne natürlich)!
Alright now that I've watched the video, I gotta say your NaNo experience is absolutely nothing like mine, but even so I love hearing all about it and knowing we're on the same boat! Edit: I'm at around 30k already, but I've had a few sick days and finals are coming so anything could happen
Omg this made me feel so much better. I started late so I'm only a week-ish into nano, and I also have 10k words! I felt like I was behind but this made me feel a lot better about it. Especially since this is my first time doing it
When you switch POV's do you generally make some meta note to the reader that the view has changed? For the last two years I have been reading more and some books switch POVs so much I am getting whiplash. Take this current series, in one book there are 8 different POVs and only 1 of them has a different dialog pattern so you know who it is specifically. While that is extreme I have been noticing like 5-6 POVs in general. Perhaps it is the genres I am reading though: Epic Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Dungeon Core, LITRPG, Schooldays, and mystery.
I have writers’ retreat envy. The Troublemakers had such a fun-looking retreat recently, too. I’m having a highly-varied NaNo experience and am struggling to find the line between taking time for personal care (and existential dread?) and getting as much done as I reasonably can.
Hit 40k yesterday. Complete pantser, and love it. My first attempt at a psychological thriller and it's more fun road trip romp with a couple creepy spots.
Hello!! I have to be honest, I lost motivation for NaNo after three days even though this was to be my fourth year doing it. My school schedule’s crazy (I’m a high school senior) and I felt like I was losing my vision for the story. Now I’ve just decided to write every day and not worry about word counts.
Today-11/12 my draft is at 52k! And I'm jumping for joy. 27k of the draft is nano word count. I was a rebel and started early. This is my first manuscript and I wish I would have started writing sooner
I'm a Nano rebel. So thanks to the pandemic and virtual learning I have not had a ton of mojo to write fresh. However after listening to your vlogs for a year and a half and a few other ones (yours are my fav) I realized I had some things I really needed to fix in my book before querying anyone else. I also never put the book aside for a bit so I could like at it with fresh eyes. So I finally got the motivation and guts to go back through it and figure out what needs to be reworked. I was scared it would be horrible but there are some really great parts and if I fix the problem points the story will much stronger. November I have a goal of reading the the entire book like a beta reader and then start to rework it. I am already 2/3 of the way through it. Here's to killing your darlings - as you like to say.
I’m a rebel too! I am taking a ultra lean zero draft and bringing up the word count and filing in all the holes so I have a full working draft. I’ve added a little over 18K so far and really want to break the 20k mark this weekend. Hoping t join your streams!
I'm also a NaNo rebel! My goals with Nano are basically to push through the first act and break into the second, which hopefully, shouldn't take more than 20K, 30K is my stretch goal, which would contain parts of act 2 also. And before you start reprimanding me for the high word count for act one, I'm writing adult epic fantasy, which tends to be on the longer side - 120 K is still really safe!
What a good video! Thanks Alexa! I enjoyed it watching you without any prepared script or topic. This type of vlog is very different what I saw before with you. So it is interesting to see you real 😄 And I am also a nanorebel, just hitting 10 k tomorrow. I'm doing NaNoWriMo for the first time so it is already a big achievement for me to not give up and work each day. Anyway, good luck for everybody involved with NaNoWriMo!🙌
It’s been tough trying to find the time during the week to get a decent amount written, thankfully I’m more or less on track. Thanks so much for the videos you make, especially on how to write the beginning of your books, that definitely gave me a much needed boost to start writing a new story
I've also been really bad and only gotten like 8k into my book, but I've had a rough week (and I wasn't writing on Veteran's Day either). I hope to be able to catch up on the 12.5k/week goal as well as hit the 12.5k this week (ugh). Thanks for the inspiration from the amazing cabin vibes! :D
Awe yeyyy! This was SUPER cute. Loved this video & so happy you n your pals got to do this. "I'm makin a pot roast later...we're eatin' cheeeese" is a whole vibe haha A handful of my lady friends & I have been looking at beachfront Air B n Bs here in FL for the exact same purpose! Four day weekend to write, stuff our faces & enjoy some time away from the world. Was meant to be that I saw this video!!
This was a completely different feel from all your prior videos, but I thoroughly enjoyed it haha. Totally not jealous of your ability to just "get away" and stay in a cabin to write (one of my dreams ugh).
Hit 20k November 11th. My health has been up and down, but writing every day. This is my 3rd NaNo, and this is the most I've ever written, so I'm pretty happy with the w/c. Had to edit this! Writing EVERY day, sickly every OTHER day, this obviously being one of my "off" days. 🥴
That cabin feels like the perfect writing retreat place 😍 good luck with the rest of your nano!! I’m also rebel-ing by working on a revision instead of a new draft
Ahhh loved this! I can't wait for more of your writing sprints. I've been watching your backlog of sprints as a way to get into the writing mood ❤️I am also a NaNo rebel! I walked into this month with about 22/23K. I'm using this month to finish out the rest of my draft, and I'm thinking I'm going to hit that. I'm also a pantser, so this is just a guess! Though my chapters are broken up by a particular theme based on Kat O'Keeffe's 3 act structure. It's so hard not to go back and edit, but I'm determined to get through this draft so I can get to my favorite part. of the writing process 🥰
Hey, Alexa! I can't wait for the stream tonight. I intend to hit 20K by midnight. I'm sitting at a nice, tidy 18,056 as of the end of the ad that followed this video. (Yeah... I may or may not continue to write while listening to other people talk about their works. XD I still really like what you've shared, though, and I can't wait to hear more about your WIP!) I didn't write much on November 2 as that was a 3 hour test day for me, but I made up for it on the 7 with 3.1K words. For my current chapter, I've switched from 3rd Person to 1st Person and seen a ton of improvements. I'm not sure if I'll stick with it, though, as I feel like there's still something missing. I've been able to really sculpt the bones out of all of my characters so far (the ones I've made spots for on my characters doc, at least) and I think that I'm improving at some of my characterizations. I have ended up just writing words about the daily lives of these characters in an alternate reality where the Nazis win WW2 instead of focusing on what they write, how they write it, and what they hope the future brings. Instead, I've accidentally turned it into a murder-filled alt-history with a touch of fantasy and sci-fi with just enough romance to keep everyone happy. (Thus far, I've kept anyone from kissing. it's hard though. I want them to kiss but I need to time it just write.) Alright, well, back to it! This post is just a bunch of words that I could've put on my Doc but instead dedicated to answering the end of video question. XD Hayden out!
I've always wanted to go to a writing retreat. My friend is editing her finished 1st draft, I think I'll ask her if she's be down to dip town with me for the weekend and get an airbnb.
this is my first nanowrimo ever ! I'm inherently a rebel since I write screenplays not prose, so far I am very happy with myself for pushing through ! hopefully I'll be hitting the mid-point in the next two days ??? maybe ???? i think ???
Really enjoyed this. I like how you have created a casual yet determined approach to NaNo, which to me, is the fun part of NaNo, instead of tons of anxiety. Your retreat looks great too. Can’t wait for the next vlog.
I am doing my FIRST Nano, and I've been sick the past couple of days and not written anything. I am hoping to feel better tomorrow so I can begin the process of catching up... I have crossed the 10K mark though, so that's something. Good luck to you all!!
I thought that I would give it an unofficial try this year, but gave up within days. I've always written by time (2 hrs in the morning plus optional evening hours when the writing is going well) and I found that I hate word count goals. Still, I'm at a bit over 12K words, on a 60K-70K SF mystery/adventure, so it's going pretty well, all in all. Especially since I have all of the long Wisconsin winter ahead with nothing better to than write.
I am pretty much on track but I'm worried for the story needing to become a novella because I don't think it needs to be a full novel. Luckily I have another full outline that I will start to push past 50,000. It won't be an official win but hey I would have 2 stories over 1 lmao. (They were both written as novella ideas but I added to one trying to push it to be a full out novel. Didn't work lol)
Definitely behind on word counts but I’m not upset about it. Not to mention I semi-plotted a story last month that I scraped and completely changed genre 3 days into the month 😂
I am a bit behind and I feel like instead of the characters finding the evidence, the evidence is finding them... My goal is to finish the book, so for now I only take notes of what to fix later. Also, I am at the brink of the next major sceen and I'll write it even if its atrocious and won't look back on it until the end.
My NaNo has been interesting to say the least lol. Up until 1PM on November 1st I was full steam ahead with focusing on 3 projects because I love the all equally the are all different genre. As I sat down to write I decided to only focus on Zero Drafting one and that's what I have been doing. My Zero drafts tend to be between 20 - 40 k so that's my goal for the month. I just want to get it out on paper then I will put it aside and work on one of my other projects in December.
Are you going to pitch this isolation thriller to your current editor or do you forsee yourself doing an auction? My nano month is a hot mess, but that's okay because my mental health has wavered throughout the month. I feel good about what I've done though! 3,500 words so far! I have a week at the beach planned with my family- so that will be where I get most of my words for NaNoWriMo. Then I have 2 weeks of vacation coming December. But I've actually paused drafting to do some addition fairy tale research after watching the Explained episode of fairy tales on Netflix. So fascinating!
So jealous of your trip! Although the leaves here in my neck of the woods are gorgeous at the moment. I hope you saw some fantastic foliage. I've been trying to write a thousand words a day and so far I am doing well (just over 14,000). I, too, cheated for NaNo (or a NaNo rebel) and I'm continuing a project I started in September, I'm hoping to finish drafting by the end of the month. Keep up the great work everyone- Side bar-Can you/have you done a video about character profiles? I know there is a spot for them in Scrivener but I've never used them. Tips? Tricks? Does a Pinterest board count? I have a habit of forgetting little details about them (like facial hair or eye color) and I never make note of that somewhere-so endless scroll backs ensue. I need to do better...HAHA
I had planned on achieving 50,000 words but now I'll be happy if I just wrote everyday till 30th Nov. Focusing on word counts does not work for me, I prefer focusing on the time spent writing
This is the first time I'm doing NaNoWriMo, it would also be my first completed book. I'm perfectly on track. But it's getting really hard to quiet that feeling of just writing utter garbage.
three questions about beta readers-- is it ever too early to have a beta reader? should someone have a beta reader if they write fanfic? if someone publishes, on an online platform posts weekly, has a good schedule, but a small amount of readers, should they *still* have a beta reader?
You can! They have it on a replay: www.crowdcast.io/e/2021-fall-speak-up/7. That's my first one--click on the bar on the top left to select session 8 to see the second one!
