This is the most engaging episode of your show that I have yet listened to. Thank you both, I really enjoyed this, and it's that rare thing: a podcast that I'm going to listen to more than once.
Expected you to disagree with him on trigger warnings. Seriously that is exactly the wrong thing to do which we know from psychotherapy. You create even more fragile psyches by warning people before they get exposed to very trivial things. Haven't you had Jonnathan Haidt on your podcast? Will you invite him? Rory really dropped the ball here. The problem is that the trigger warnings are creating people that can't deal with normal reality anymore. It's not something you should promote.
That tangentialism is his brain doing creative rubiks cube, generating lots of threads and ideas which can become chaos if someone doesn't keep track and rewind a couple of steps and finish off the loop.
I came here after watching Rory was 'interviewed' by Alex O'Conor. It is extraordinary that Chris got more than eight words in. Rory is brilliant!!! I love hearing him speak. I wonder if he is bored out of his skyll by not being able to have these intense conversations every week. Bloody good show.
I get the impression that Rory could walk into a post office and have an intense conversation with whoever was there while taking two hours to buy a stamp

Rory is clearly a very intelligent guy but I’ve actually had to turn the podcast off with 45 minutes left to go. He won’t even let Chris finish a question that he’s posing and completely cuts him off each time. I’m sure it’s not intentional and purely down to enthusiasm but have some self awareness in a 2 way conversation. Shame it kinda ruined this podcast episode
Yeah, call it ADHD or whatever (adult before label/diagnosis started)...I love people who jump around like this. There is a thread of commonality throughout. It is not just random. It's a joy when you get two people that can handle it and converse. I think part of it is geographical. Where I grew up we all carried on simultaneous conversations at the same time. Where I live now, it's really rare to get someone who can.
I find he's a terrible communicator, he interrupts constantly, doesn't listen and speaks down to Chris. He also consistently turns it around and makes it about himself.
@@mariolongtin8271weirdly though, I don’t mind when he interrupts, because it doesn’t feel malicious it just seems like he’s so excited to share something he’s going to burst, plus he has ADD or ADHD so it makes sense his mannerisms
@joethomas9926 Yeah, that also makes a lot of sense! I get the "I'm better than you, I'm the master, now listen to me vibes." I could be off. Nonetheless, he is definitely intelligent.
Instead of usually his talents for psychology and the human good, he used it to make money for corporations that’s what I don’t like. Marketing and advertising is probably the most disgusting career in the world.

Rory Sutherland sits alone at the barycenter of wit & wisdom. The gravitas of his pragmatism and sound reasoning is eclipsed only by his gregarious charm and disarming mirth. Thank you, Chris for having the humility to simply listen and allow this man to fire on all cylinders.44

Yeah he was talking about CEO talking about big topic like GDP and interest rate and suddenly he talks about police and guns and suddenly he talked about a toilet. Like dude go back to the CEO thing 😂
Rory Sutherland is one of my favorite people since his amazing TED talks years ago when TED was still good. He has unconventional and fascinating ideas

First time I’m hearing of this Rory chap, complete gem. What a great and interesting conversation. Well done letting him run, the way you threaded this conversation was great.
If Hormozi is the angel sitting on one of my shoulders, then Rory is the devil sitting on the other. What a wonderfully, lovably, distractible man. No matter where the story goes it will be interesting, insightful, and hilarious. Absolute legend.
Reminds me of my old boss. Fascinating stories, insights and delightful mischievous humour in his delivery. A new guest at my imaginary dinner party. Great podcast 👍🏼😄
This interview was so effin good. Rory is an incredible mind and one of, if not the most, insightful + humourous conversationalists in the Anglo world right now. Kudos Mr. Williamson 👏👏
This dude is fractal! Every single answer contains an anecdote that contains another answer which has anecdote in it …. Self similar for 3 hours and brilliant.

@@EbonyPope I'm sure he'd be aware of the "Antifragile" concept pushed by Nassim Taleb, I don't think he's connected the dots though. He's been blinded by the allure of supposed compassion, rather than true compassion. An oversight that is easy to fall into if you have a framework that prioritises being nice before being responsible.
I love watching Rory being interviewed. He's the perfect interviewee - has very interesting things to say, is erudite and humorous, and doesn't let the interviewer finish a sentence 😆
Watching Chris try to keep up with ADHD pinballing is almost as much fun as the pinballing itself 😆 By the end he really nails it, though. It's quite a skill to be able to catherd the bees in the head into a coherent interview 🤩
You have one of the best shows on the internet, Chris! Thanks for my first exposure to Rory Sutherland. He's very smart and nice but exhausting to listen to!
The sound guys must have had the most strenuous time editing Rorys audio from all the left-and-right body swinging he does 10 times per second (bless the man), the audio balance is just non existent and threshold is all over the place. My god, i love it. He talks with his body movement with equal vigor and speed if not greater than his mind can form sentences. Give your audio guys a raise, Chris, the sweat from editing this podcast is palpable. Love the pod ❤
Holy mackerel in a sackerel of quackerel, what an incredible two hours of rich conversation. I'm honestly floored, my normal ability to leave an incisive remark is just clapped-out! It would maybe take me an hour to re-skim through the episode and compile all the great moments I have something to say about, and that's a treasured feeling. Who is this Rory Sutherland and how have I not encountered him before?
47:40 I found my engagement ring. Fell in love with it. It was at Costco. It may be gone the next time we were there. I called my fiance and bought it on the spot. It was 1/4 of his monthly income. I love the ring still today, 16 years later.
This guy is the reason I started vaping instead of smoking. Had been smoking for 20 years, and saw this guy on the show. Chris started talking to him about vaping. Rory said it is a much better way to get nicotine on a variety of levels. I tried it out because of his glowing review. Coincidentally, I breathe much better now. I can run for the first time in my life. Chris, your show is making my life better. Thanks, you are a real hero.
Same, I’m now using nicotine pouches to quit vaping. Tried patches and gum but didn’t do it for me. Now I’m steadily lowering the amount of pouches by spacing out the time between use. Used to be 1 hour now it’s 4. I can feel the improvement in my lungs already and it’s only been 2 weeks
Wow, dude! That is really rad! Personally, I like what nicotine does to me, so I don't want to quit. But not inhaling burning plants and industrial chemicals every day made a HUGE difference in my health. I recommend it to every smoker I know.
It depends if you like the subject or just want to succeed. If you don't like his stories then he can be extremely boring. And you can hate being there and loathe the sound of their voice. Speaking from experience.
I got married in 2011. I am telling you. I absolutely feel like I caught the last helicopter out of Saigon. That is such an apt way to put that. I have been looking for the words forever. ROFL.
100%. NFI where i'd even start with the mess that is the dating scene these days. I wrote my wife a letter ffs. The way it's done now seems so freaking toxic.
I’ve probably watched about 20 different Rory interviews. I think Cory got to speak more than anyone. Rory is full of knowledge and anyone who’s choosing to have him on the podcast has to be aware he has a creative mind that is always connecting to more information. You have to know what to expect when Rory gets on and you’ll always learn something different. He tends to be repetitive but that’s natural with advertising or sales
Great episode, but the chap relentlessly goes off on tangents and interrupts you at every chance. He is well intentioned but conducting that interview must have been like herding cats. 😂
Going to read (rather listen) to all of his books on audible! Used to be in advertising wish I had had a boss like him! He has such a wealth of knowledge!
For anyone wondering: Trim tabs are smaller control surfaces connected to large control surfaces. I'll use the example of the elevator on a plane that controls the nose-up/nose-down attitude of the plane. Say the plane's controls are slightly uncalibrated, or there's particularly windy or whatever conditions when youre flying, and your plane constantly sort of wants to go nose-up. In that case you have to CONSTANTLY apply the elevator down control, which gets annoying, tiring, and limits your full range of control. So you adjust the trim tab on your elevator so that the plane flys level without you having to do any input. I'd sort of make a parallel with zeroing in the rifle at a certain distance you're shooting at that day so you don't have to manually adjust for elevation every shot you take.
Love how chris kept his ground ❤️ but also this is a great Rory interview! Saw him 10 years ago, and he's adapted how he shares he's view on current topics
Properly enjoyed this chat that seemingly went all over the place but in the best possible way. Rory constantly had me asking questions and made me feel optimistic about attempting to answer anything. Chris did a brilliant job shepherding the conversation to ensure we rounded off some great topics. Cheers!
This has to be one of the most engaging conversation.. Esp. use of language, storytelling, complimentary skills of both Chris & Rory and sheer energy that's put in here. Worth the time. Almost at par with James Sexton Podcast with Lex. Notwithstanding the fact that there are 0 takeaways and totally misleading thumbnail.
The "Sage of Baltimore" refers to H.L. Mencken, a prominent American journalist, essayist, and critic known for his wit and sharp commentary on politics, society, and culture. Mencken was influential in the early 20th century and is remembered for his critiques of American politics, his skepticism of reform movements, and his humorous, often cynical view of American life. He was a significant figure in American journalism and literature, particularly noted for his work with the "Baltimore Sun" and his contributions to the "Smart Set" and "American Mercury" magazines
Subscribed because of this interview. Absolutely brilliant 😂 I went from being annoyed by Rory’s interruptions to being distracted by them. Masterful interview and patience. Fair play to you.
Alex Oconnor just interviewed Rory and im so sorry i missed this podcast because he is just incredibly full of usable information while also being hilarious. This is how a good salesperson operates, and Rory is very very good. Its nice to hear a full throated case for Georgism from a conservative. Phenomenal guest, shame i missed him months ago.
Rory is an original thinker - merges persuasion, behavioral econ, open minded to arrive at interesting and original observations - and takes himself not too seriously, so fun to watch and learn.
1:35:37 🎉I LOVE that you pointed out that old tv interview of folks here in the U.S. griping about not being allowed to drink and drive! There’s similar one where people are griping about wearing seatbelts in the front seat!😅 Also, I laughed so hard at “NOTHING in America is beyond being drive through-able.” 😂 SO TRUE! And even here in Ohio we have drive thru weed dispensaries. I love this interview.
I was a software engineer for 16 years. I joined with a few years (relevant) experience but my education was in Mathematics. By the time I left that company they rejected any applications from people who didn't have computer science degrees. When I pointed out to people that the most senior and respected software engineers in the department had physics degrees, chemistry degrees, and mathematics degrees, the response I got was that they just had too many applications so had to filter them down somehow.
I liked when he would go off topic and just riff- but you seemed to want him to stay very focused but brillliant people often see connections in things and share them. So bright my brain was electrified following him! OMG HIS GEMS...one of them on Austin "I can get great coffee by people with wonderful body art. But in afternoon I can drive to the desert and fire machine guns at oil drums..."
I agree with his views on travel. I've only just come across him. But I will often take the more enjoying and comfortable route when driving. Rather than the quickest route.
The only chap who doesn't irritate when he interrupts, it's always fascinating and engaging without fail, what a mind. ADHD + extremely high IQ is a lethal combo
I have never seen this show, but I'll say that chris seemed super interested and was a good interviewer, he let his guest speak. In regards to the USA and Canada, i am not sure everyone wants to live in suburbia and spend hours in cars, they just can't all afford to move to NY, SF or Boston, etc or even Vancouver, Toronto etc. Some do, others will never trade a big city with transportation for an isolated car status culture. In NY status is about what you do, not your job nor your car, but what you do as fulltime passion which may or may not be what pays the bills.
