Nothing you said has changed my mind about MDF........ I absolutely ❤️ using MDF! Jigs, workbench tops, carcasses, etc etc etc MDF should always be an option

Every material has its place, and MDF is one of the most versatile there is. The only thing I hate is the dust....which you can solve with dust extraction and a good mask. I wish it held screws as well as plywood, but if you pre-drill and use the right type of screw, it's fine. You can stain, paint and finish it to a high standard (but always sand it first), and I think it is the best, most cost effective material for cabinets cupboards, wardrobes etc. I've never tried Caber, but Medite, Finsa and Kronospan products have always been good quality. If you want the practicality of MDF with the beauty of wood, you can always buy veneered boards...as long as you lip the edges, they are virtually indistinguishable from solid wood, without the issues of expansion and contraction.

Totally agree with all of your points David. I've not tried Kronospan, who supplies that? Also agree with the veneered option as well, as much as I love real wood, it very rarely makes sense if you look at it. Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas!

@@TheNaturalWorkshop I believe that Travis Perkins sell some Kronospan products. Used to get mine from a local supplier, but they have closed up, so now I mostly use Medite for jobs where quality counts.

As an American woodworker, I am thankful for the variety of wood species we can get here. And the prices have dropped since peak Covid. Your reasons are all good, and the role of MDF is whenever rigidity is more important than density (weight) and it can be finished (painted, veneered, etc.) acceptably. I've used a hardboard covered MDF bench top for years, yet I replaced it last year with a beautifully oil finished hardwood because it inspires me every time I walk into my shop. There are lots of reasons to use various materials and they're all good.

Hey, apologies for the poor reply. Work went mad and we all got sick for weeks! Totally agree and love the point about changing the top as it inspires you. I quite often think that that is half the battle and if we can build an environment that makes us smile and want to be there, then we can really be creative and work well. Happy New Year!

MDF certainly has a massive place in a lot of scenarios. I use it a lot for door panels, shelves etc. As a hand woodworker though its a pain in the arse to hand plane and finish nicely when mixed with solid timber. I guess I'm from the generation who edge banded ply etc. I love using vintage hand tools so I'm not going to run a Georgian moulding plane down a length of MDF but I have to agree about it's stability. Its a great product in its place but you wouldn't double glaze Westmister Abbey! Everything in it's place to perform to a situation.

Yeah totally fair comment. I think its all about using the right material for the right job. I see so many RU-vidrs saying things like "X is the only material" or "You have to get tool Y because its going to make you so much better" when in reality there are other options that work really well. That being said, I love using natural materials, you should see the smile on my face when I run a hand plane over a corner to get a 45 chamfer, absolutely love it! Ohh...or when you oil a beautiful bit of Walnut, my Mrs always laughs at me when I do that and get excited lol. Happy New Year by the way, thanks for watching an apologies for the amount of time it took for a reply, sickness and Christmas!

Totally agree with you! It is a shame that it is such a hassle for UK DIYers to get Medite MDF, particularly Medite Optima, which looks absolutely perfect for jigs and routed items.

Apologies for the late reply, we had a whole bunch of sickness and Christmas going on! Yeah, I really do like it for Jigs and the finish quality, you can find it, just takes a while to find a supplier that has a good price and not a killer on delivery!

Horses for coarses really, good quality MDF is very useful for many of the things you mentioned. I personally wouldn't have my workbench top out of MDF because it kills the edges on chisels etc unless you're uber careful how you put them down. My benchtop is made of ex50mm Tulipwood, stable, flat and will last decades whereas even quality MDF like Medite will eventually break/wear through the hard top layer and become furry, It wears more than timber. Good to see you back by the way. You can't make windows out of MDF but Accoya or Thermo Frake are uber stable, durable and compared to Tricoya (Only really good for door panels etc) cost effective. I would also add that with timber you don't need to use tungsten cutters which you do when using MDF😉

Yeah thats a fair comment. I use and abuse the MDF top and quite often screw timber into it for clamping purposes, theres been no end of time that I have snapped screws/nails off into it so fully expect to have to change it out in a year or so. I like the idea of Tulipwood though, hard enough to give a decent surface but not create issues. Ill bare that in mind! Accoya is nice, we had the rep around the other week to become an "Approved manufacturer" which is cool, like you said though and its the same for tools, the right tool and material for the right job and it will make like a lot easier! Thanks by the way, this last 6 months and 3 months in particular has been mad, lots of video ideas but its just been about keeping the lights on and the family looked after. Hopefully will have lots of videos this year as I want RU-vid to be a priority and want to bring it more into the business in terms of ideas so fingers crossed, there should be lots of long form content coming up!

@@TheNaturalWorkshop Oi Oi, good to see you back. It does seem like running a business is getting more difficult and I've seen a few companies going pop recently. Regarding bench tops, Do try and look after mine but it still has screw holes and even domino holes in it but it does keep nice n flat and when I'm glueing up I can easily sand it regularly. Look forward to seeing more of your video's this year and hope you have a really good year. 👍
