In this video we power up my DS4246 from NetApp to get enlightened as to how noisy it is on start-up. In addition a look at the watt meter reveals just how much power these units draw empty using the minimum two PSU's.

The video quality is much better. great update I wouldn't just use one psu as your just putting extra load on it it will take the same power put will have to work twice as harder especially on boot up. You could even end up damaging it and you don't want to have to buy another one. Looking forward to seeing it build up with drives loving the content keep its coming.

Yes, going to take that advice from you and others. Thanks for your comment.

Great video. Love to see the Chia-ish content. I wouldn't recommend only using one. The fans in the PSUs are also used to cool the drives. Removing one of the PSU would reduced the cooling capacity when it's fully loaded. Once you get drives in there, I don't think there would be much difference in power draw between using one PSU vs. two...but it would be an interesting test.

That's good to know. I intended to use two as suggested by Digital Spaceport. It is just someone commented that you did not need two if using SATA drives. Thanks for watching.

thats nice, 35w as a base usage. my farmer with 8 hdd, 2ssd and no gpu idles at 80-90w. BUT, when you boot it peaks at 200-220w. so thats why you got two massive PSU's to catch that initial peak. my PSU is i think 420w, but i sure need to replace it when i get more disks in the future. dont want the PSU to stress to much during booting.

Makes sense ate. I didn't watch the meter to see what it peaked at on start-up but sure the 2 PSU's can handle it.

@@crypto-carlosits still a learning curve for me also. 16hdd can run on 400w. but booting all at once....i dont know yet with my current psu hahaha

you need 2 power supplies and only one controller, so you can just slide one out a little to disconnect but leave in there to keep the proper airflow

Thanks, that will probably save a few watts.

I have 18 drives installed, including 6 SAS Exos 16TB. It‘s consuming 170W. Switching one PSU off didnt work for me, not much change, it‘s getting a bit louder.

Any idea what the individual SAS drives add to the wattage? I heard some rumours that you could expect them to draw anything up to 15 watts each? as opposed to around 6 watts per SATA equivalent. Any truth in that?

@@crypto-carlos 15 Watts each is not possible. At least for my 16TB SAS Exos not. As I wrote - I have 18 HDDs and 170W consumption and it is 8 SAS drives now. Or the rest 10 SATA drives use only 8W each and the NetApp nothing ;) You can see on the Website of seagate a comparison of sata ans sas and there is only little difference. www.seagate.com/content/dam/seagate/migrated-assets/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/exos-x18-channel-DS2045-4-2106US-en_US.pdf

To change the number you can remove the cover on the left side an press the button on the top. Press it longer to confirm. You will find out ;) BTW, do you know how to make use of the ACP-Ports ? I have no clue how to connect. A normal ethernet connection does not work.

Cool! thanks for the info. No idea how or why you would use those ports. I downloaded some manuals somewhere - will take a look see. Thanks for watching.

Same unit DS4246? Same configuration 2 PSU top left and bottom right, 2 x IOM modules? Don't forget, as detailed in the video, I put all my equipment through my Reillo UPS for protection, which is running in smart ECO mode. This would not save 64 watts though.

@@crypto-carlos yes, got 4 Psu, 2 not connected, 2 iom 6. On internet i found the same power usage as i have. Just dont understand how you can have only about 40 watt.

When I watched Digital Spaceports video on this unit he did mention that you should completely remove two of the PSU and use the blanking plates. Not sure why, but it may be that having them plugged into the unit but not plugged into the power supply still draws extra current? I will fire the unit up again and take another reading at some point. Keep an eye out on the Community tab for an update from me.
