In this video we compare stock Sur-Ron with multiple tire upgrades on OEM 19" wheels vs 90/100-16" Shinko Cheater Sticky tire vs 18"/21" Dunlop 90/100-18" MX33 to show how each tire size (and weight) affects performance of your SurRon. Acceleration is done on pavement to ensure full traction. We will cover off-road traction, handling, lap times, and more in future tests, so be sure to subscribe!

I have an 18" rear wheel offset set up with Dunlop MX33 tyre 90/100/18, when i installed it was touching the side stand spring on the left and the chain on the right. with this set up it was 10kg with bead lock and 58T sprocket. when i tested just on the stand it was showing top speed of 69 ton 71 kmph.

If you did those tests in reverse starting from an absolute full battery, you **might** get similar results bc of the significant increase in power that you get when you are at/near max capacity.
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback, the battery was on charger between each set of tires, battery level never dropped below 92% during all of this testing. Also our fastest runs were rarely the first run so 100% is not required for max power. The 18/21 is significantly heavier and also has a much larger diameter putting it at a gearing disadvantage. Physics... Honestly we expected the 18/21 to be even slower than this, 5% acceleration loss is pretty good in consideration of all of these factors. You can feel the power loss on the 18/21, it's noticeable to anybody who gets on the bike. This is the reason everyone runs 60t and 64t sprockets with this setup, it's needed to return the power. :)
@bslothed3211
@bslothed3211 Год назад
Max capacity is the same all the way down to 60% then it starts to drop in performance by a little bit, mainly top speed.

I did just watch your recent TKO setup video. But what do you think is the best wheel setup at the end of the day. A 19/16 setup? Or running something along the lines of 21/18? Thanks In advance to reading!(:
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks Год назад
not an easy question to answer. Essentially 16/19 if you want to keep the fun,nimble,playful nature of the bike and certainly if you don't want to invest in battery/controller upgrades to overcome added weight which is just about a requirement for 18/21 with all the added weight. All of us ran 16/19 at TKO for a variety of reasons but the #1 reason we did it is tire selection, it's not possible to run a gummy tire with foam inserts in 18" on a surron, they won't fit. However in 16/19 we have an incredible tire selection with many gummy tires available and even foam mousse inserts to guarantee no flat tires in extreme enduro which is crucial for that type of event. HOWEVER the bikes that finished in front of us were Electric Motion's with 18/21's and gummy trials tires which was an advantage through the rock gardens. These bikes also have a longer wheelbase which was an advantage on the many hillclimbs. In a nutshell: 16/19 for most people, 18/21 for those seeking a larger bike and willing to invest in power upgrades.
@DukeFerg
@DukeFerg Год назад
@@ChargedCycleWorks Understandable with that being a hard question to answer, but I really appreciate the thorough response you have given me, thank you! I have on order a ko motor, controller & 72v chi battery. So lack of power won't be my issue. I have challenged this question to many popular sur ron off road youtubers many are saying 19/16 while others are saying the bike is limited by its smaller tires and think 21/18 is the only correct answer. I wanna buy a nice wheelset so I am trying to get my choice right the first time lol. Again, thank you! :)

Have you tried a 16 wheel on back and a 21 on front? Would it be off balance?
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 2 года назад
it would not be a good combo, you would be shifting far too much weight and balance onto the rear end making for a poor handling and steering chassis. When it comes to tire combos simply look at the motorcycle industry where they've perfected it over the last 100 years. It's no different on surron. A 90/100-18 like the super light weight K990 is the perfect match to a 21" on the surron. And a great 70/100-19 MX tire up front feels amazing with a 16" MX rear tire which is the setup used on Motocross racing bikes with the same chassis dimensions as the Surron, bikes like KX85 and KTM105.

Yes, our wheels come dished for the tire you purchase. Our hubs are manufactured to offset away from the chain for no or less dishing required. Our wheelsets and hubs are made for 3.5-4" wide MX tires.

Can you put sur Ron wheels on the x160
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 2 года назад
yes you can, they are interchangeable, the only thing to be careful of is the X160 might have a smaller fork and tire sizes might be limited to 70/100-19" inside that fork. Not a big deal as there are amazing tires available in this size.

Hey Zack, a bit confused by this comment, you would keep your stock front 19" wheel up front and upgrade the tire on the rim to a much better mx 19" tire and then install the new 16" rear wheel tire for a 16/19 combo.

@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 2 месяца назад
18" rear is better for off-road riding, less pinch flats and better traction with lower PSI. 100/90-19 is a motocross tire meant for tracks. You can't really run a 70/100-19 with a 21" up front, will be off-balance with gobs of traction and weight up front and not a lot out back.

@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 4 месяца назад
16" rear provides a superior tire selection from the motocross world with tires of all terrain and rubber compound options. The traction and handling is superior in every way to the 19" rear tires which are all tires made for the front of a motorcycle not the rear.

@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
Thanks for the feedback! Did you put a longer chain on and move the wheel all the way back on the chain adjusters? That might just have enough room on the 90/100-18, but hadn't tried doing that yet. We also just got a K990 and will be mounting that up soon to see how it clears vs the MX33.

ericjonromnes is right. The battery amount matters. Fraction of a percent disharged each run/ fraction of a second differences each run. Gotta charge battery full before each run to be fair.
@ChargedCycleWorks
@ChargedCycleWorks 3 года назад
Actually, based on our testing our fastest acceleration runs were rarely the first run, it was often the 2nd or 3rd run that was fastest. This confirms that our testing was fairly done and that a few runs on each tire did not affect battery discharge rates. In the video we said we would not test below 80%, but we never dropped below 92% during these runs and we charged while we were swapping tires/wheels. We feel VERY confident in these numbers based on our real world test data.
