Name suggestion for a "Welder Canary" - The Weaver Bird. Reknowned for building elaborately woven nests. Maybe in time, it will also be known as the Splitsie Bird.

@Splitsie - Red lighting is used on Navy ships for a couple of reasons. One, the "glow" of red light doesn't travel as far as white light. Two, it eases eye strain in transitioning from brightly lit interior sections of the ship to the dark outside. This also serves to aid in the eyes adjusting to the dark. This is especially needed for the bridge watch standers and the external lookouts so that they can keep track of other ships in close vicinity (the ocean is a vast place but you would be surprised at how often ships encounter each other, especially at night). The combat information center of a warship typically has blue lighting to ease eye strain while looking at all of the weapons systems and radar consoles in a dark room and to prevent glare on the screens from the overhead lighting. There are some arguments on whether blue light or green light is better for this, but at least for now the US Navy still uses blue.

30:45 Got to say I tend to share this sentiment. There are certain things we can do in SE that do feel like cheating, and I also try to 'engineer' a different solution. Case in point, I recently landed my redundant space station on the moon in order to start a fixed lunar base. Sure, I could have just ground it down once there, but it had a load of batteries that were all over 75% charge, some full, and I didn't want to lose all that stored power. It's harder, but I have to say it was much more satisfying to grind off the batteries, and to then use vehicles and fixed cranes to get them over to the build site and merge-block them on to the new station. I did the same with the Oxygen and Hydrogen tanks as well. Sometimes it's the self-imposed restrictions that make things a little bit more fun and interesting.
@BillWiltfong
@BillWiltfong 3 года назад
It was so great seeing you finally welding in the sky! Now you can lift up all the wind gens to a more efficient height. You've probably already worked out that an unmodified Canary can pick up a welding attachment machine using its connector. That way you can use any Canary for welding on-the-fly, swap them out easily for recharging, and dump the construction weight immediately in case the Canary needs to do some brrrrrtt.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 3 года назад
I guess I could lift them, I'm almost certain that most of them won't be lifted however since I mainly kept them low for aesthetics :P Though you have made me wonder if it's worthwhile lifting some of the ones on the conveyor pilons and putting passageway blocks underneath to allow walking along underneath them

I did a similar thing that you want but with search lights... Set up the rotor limits you want, then you need 4 timer blocks, 1 left-right that repeats itself, 1 up-down that repeats itself, then 1 on/off for the up/down rotor and 1 on/off for the left right (or use the rotor lock)... but most important each timer should be set to a slightly different time will give a nice random motion... Also... use small timer blocks and don't hide them, as they can make a wall of randomly flashing lights that makes a cool computer looking device :)
@ivanheffner2587
@ivanheffner2587 3 года назад
19:25 You might also consider setting angle limits on the hinge and have the timers reverse the hinge and increase/decrease movement speeds so it appears to track differently moving signals. If you’re concerned that you don’t want the dish rotating around 360º you could set some rotor limits as well to keep it always within a limited area. 28:49 There’s this small battery just waiting to be turned into a jumper pack...

You could build a cargo drone version of the canary to move ice using a drone have two or three running together back and forth using the Pam cargo drone ability
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 3 года назад
I could, the reason I'm unlikely to is the power cost of running the drones, I guess that could be met by hydrogen engines running at the ice lake once I'm set up there. Will have to see how easily I gain excess power with them

I would say make a dedicated welder drone, grinder drone, and a hauler drone that you could possibly link the other two to
@mykeh3155
@mykeh3155 3 года назад
Dedication might be a bit much at this stage since he’s not at the large scale yet, so maybe a small multi role “tractor” drone that can connect to tools would be more suitable. All he would need is a decently powerful small drone with 2 or 3 connections via connectors, 1 of which using a merge block out the front to attack tools/cargo. rear/side connectors can attach additional cargo. This gives far more freedom for its usage and reduces the overall cost as he wont need to build more and more drones, only tools. Cargo can also be filled up when mining/grinding, then dropped off onto a trailer or station so he can pick up and fill more.

I always thought hydrogen was already too powerful. Yes you can split water ice into H2 and O2, but it takes more energy than you get back by burning it. They should also need oxygen to run. I'd like to see hydrogen engines be less power dense than batteries (less MW output by weight/volume), but the storage should be much lighter (higher energy capacity). That way there would be a trade off between the extra weight of the engine, but better scaling. Hydrogen for big vehicles, or those needing to go a long time before recharging. Batteries for small vehicles, or those that need big bursts of power.
@Splitsie
@Splitsie 3 года назад
The way they work in game I definitely find it best to not think of them as having anything to do with H20. I'm still unsure how I feel they could be made better as well, particularly with where reactors sit in the power generation blocks. I feel any change to hydrogen would need to mess with them as well to try and give each type it's own niche where it's the best option to use
@JPEight
@JPEight 3 года назад
@@Splitsie Maybe if reactors had a warm up and cool down time like in real life? That way you use them for background stuff like refineries. Then for things like thrusters they take 60+ seconds before they produce max power, but then carry on consuming uranium even after you stopped using the power, making them impractical and expensive to run for those kind of loads.
@JPEight
@JPEight 3 года назад
@@Splitsie And you’re right about not thinking of it as H2O. Maybe there’s something else we could rename it to, but I can’t think of anything in the real world that contains both oxygen and fuel that can easily be split.
@JPEight
@JPEight 3 года назад
@@Splitsie So on the scale of highly fluctuating loads to constant you’d have Batteries, then hydrogen, but both need charging up or refuelling, so your primary power is coming from either nuclear or renewable. Nuclear being more space efficient, but expensive especially on fluctuating loads such as vehicles. Renewable being cheaper, but taking up lots more volume/area. In space without wind power you can kind of get by on solar for a time, but you’ll quickly be forced to get reactors. The progression would be batteries and renewable for your rover start, but batteries are too heavy for practical flight. Then you get hydrogen for the lighter power storage and for getting to space. Once in space you get reactors, but still need hydrogen or batteries for planets.

Oooo... That was close! Nearly took your year two Death Allowance early - lol. Speaking of those blue screens, it's long irritated me that there's no way to set a custom default colour scheme, as it's a real grind having to set them all individually if, for example, you want to establish a 'corporate' colour scheme, or fleet consistency, or simply setting up a 'moody' control room like you have here. I'd ask if you know of a mod for this, but I imagine you'd already be using it - lol (and I've searched the Workshop, too). Thinking about it, it shouldn't be too hard to achieve, theoretically - just needs a couple of 'screen colours' sliders on the grid info panel, or even hook it to the faction screen, maybe even both (with grid overriding any faction setting, in case of fleet variations?). You have contacts in the modding community, perhaps you could ask someone if it can be done, or even drop a nod to Keen for the next update (if you still have their ear)? In my opinion, you should take the benefit of the new hydrogen rebalance in Vanilla. Not only for the same reasons you rationalised earlier in the episode, but because it also empowers your space travel endeavours planned for year two? VERY nice work on the aerodrome! Love the dish!

The Hydrogen Engine was ridiculous.. Gas guzzler if the only possible description. 1 Liter water gives 1235 Liter Hydrogen gas and 622 Liter Oxygen... So Energy is is around 3.6 kW/h per Liter. So to do the shown 250KW energy you'd need the Gas from 70 Liter (Water) in a hour to produce 250kW/h. In SE this engine eats tons of water in that time. Just remember 1 m³ ice is roughly 1000 Liter water.... Enough to run this engine 14 hours and to produce 3.5 M Wh energy, So enough to fill 3 large batteries if i remember correct the size of the Battery with 1 MWh. And that all with 1m³ ice. Still the ice had to be split into Hydrogen and Oxygen first, wich consumes the same amount of energy you get burning it. Net gain zero... So making energy with the Hydrogen engine is more or less BS. Solar cells or nuclear power is the way to go.
@AViegarien
@AViegarien 3 года назад
I don't remember what the value for the energy density of H2 was before the patch as that's not something I really messed with. But if they tweaked that number you should still be receiving that benefit even with your other changes. Right now in "GasProperties.sbc" it is 0.001556 MWh/L. I feel like it hasn't changed, but maybe I can get a version pre-update to verify.

Hi Splitsie, your "Survival Less Likely" mod gives you just half H2 production from ice (10 instead of 20) and ice has almost twice the volume (0.6 instead of 0.37). So you will have more fuel efficient engines and larger tanks, but it will be hard grind to fill them. I would leave it as it is as the mod is supposed to make things hard.

After having watched some of W4stedspace's Vanguard series and them talking about clones and soylent green, I thought it might be interesting, if possible, to add a resource requirement to the survival kit and medbay in order to respawn. Meaning, if you die, you have to have enough organic material to make a new clone. If you don't, game over. Too much, or?

Check out the PAM(Path Auto Miner) Script. I use it to shuttle Iron from my Outpost to my Base as well as to shuttle Hydrogen the other way round. Auto mining works well at sealevel and in space, but not so good on higher ground. Especially the higher grav on Omicron seems to bother it. Sadly it is not maintained anymore but it is working nice for me on my Survival Impossible save. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1507646929

The hydrogen changes are IMO a good thing, I suggest you change your game to follow them. The changes to a hydrogen powered setup do allow for some interesting setups. One that might be worth it to you is to build a scutter or mining support vehicle for your miner. Basically the scutter would be a large truck, possibly optionally manned, with a large supply of hydrogen and storage space for two or three full loads of ore from the miner. It would sit in a safe parking spot near the mining site (a cave or underground gallery?) and serve to keep the miner fueled and to shuttle ore back to base. Without the drills the scutter could be more powerful and nimble on the road. It could also carry some things the miner doesn't like an oxygen tank and maybe a survival kit (assuming you find silver) and emergency food resequencer. A variation on this could be a hinge-connected trailer for the miner with extra fuel and storage space which the miner could dock with (rear connector) to fuel and unload but would not tow into the mining site. See Spite, Taidyr and Smokki's recent Workshop creations for inspiration though adding an extra rotor (twist) to the hitch might be a good idea. Reversing trailers to connect them up is IMO a drag so a top-mounted offload connector is IMO worth looking into. A fully plumbed hitch is possible but would need a mod if you want to include a rotor. The scutter's parking space could even be a semipermanent installation with connectors for miner and scutter, some pipes. a turbine and a seat. A more permanent outpost could additionally house a large cargo container, an oxygen tank and vent and a small hydrogen tank, with the miner being parked there between mining outings. Having outpost batteries on a large grid advanced rotor head might also be interesting if you switch them out with a drone every so often for recharge. In this case the scutter would be more of a line haul truck, keeping the outpost in hydrogen and hauling away ore after mining operations. A dedicated fueler truck might also be a fun build, to keep your various creations running. In this case you could maybe look into adding mods for a small advanced rotor and a small-ejector-as-connector into your game. They would be invaluable for something like a small grid refueling boom though probably nothing in small grid could help much in (de)fueling the Panini. Keep it up!

I allready commented about this in the scraprace video. But Here is more relevant. I've use for some time a method that you may find interesting. Never tried it on a small grid but I think it is still feaseble [Hope that is spelled correctly, pardon my englis] Y place a cocpit on a rotor, now a hinge, at the other side of a piston and 2 merge blocks at the cockpit. So it is: Ship, piston, hinge, cockpit. The piston is necesary for good alinement and becouse mergeblocks wont lock with a direct subgrid. [I think that you can decouple the ginge and it will work most of the time. But is a bit risky especially with desinc and lag.] Then, with a bed of combustion thrusters, I place the cockpit with said bed beneath, so it is an upwards bed. And, wen I go beyond gravity, I switch the cocpit to the other mergeblock so the bed is frontal thrust. It is a bit more complex to build and has an extra step wen hoy switch from atmo to space. But, beyond that, is actually easyer to fly.

The Control Tower Building looks great. I wonder if the wheels can drive past hinges so that you could possibly make a monorail between the hangars and your Production building? Since Keen tends to base updates on popular mods I wonder how long until the Paint Sprayer is added? I think the Vents could be a little thinner. With the new blocks can you fill in the corners around the Antenna Dish Base (mount not building)? Depending on what you do with the Panini Landing pad I foresee spot lights added to the Hangars and Control Tower to light up the landing area.

I vote to go with the hydrogen update. You've worked hard to get to this point, I think it is reasonable that you have started 'upgrading' your machines for better efficiency. Might be time for a dedicated welding drone as well, you've got a hanger full of drones already and now your 'verticality' is increasing during building. Which means more dangerous falls. Seeing a Splitsie become a Spatsie is funny, but not when it happens too often. Tower needs red blinking safety lights, aviation safety standards. :D

I say go with the new hydrogen balance. It turns Hydrogen power into something genuinely useful rather than a desperation move. I'm not sure if you know already, but they also drastically increased the tank size (x3 for large grid tanks for instance) and reduced their mass (they now take less parts to build).

When it comes to lighting, there are some rules that fit the usage of the space. (just things to think about when deciding is tough, it really is personal preference though) Blue(ish) is good for industrious spaces, rooms where people are likely to be working and need to focus, places where you need to be awake. (by industrious, I’m referring to “work spaces”, not large machinery). Yellow(ish) is good for large spaces with less but more powerful lights, helps make it feel less artificial whilst providing a calmer feeling than other choices, also good for recreational spaces, blue is usually too much when trying to relax. Red is good for both maintenance areas, sleeping spaces (or any other room that needs some lighting to navigate darkness), red is less harsh on the eyes when dim and travels further without getting too bright. It’s generally a lot easier to adjust to a dim red light than many other colours. Greens and vibrant light blues are good for indicating the status of an industrial area, such as large machinery or vehicles moving, airlocks ready or cycling, their colours contrast well enough with other lighting choices which helps simplify things. Green can also be used to help mark out first aid stations, or areas with access to oxygen. Orange can typically be saved for warning lights, mainly for entering hazardous areas. flashing or rotating can be used to indicate more serious hazards such as a moving vehicle or active grinders, large and heavy objects like blast doors closing. Red ones can be used for emergencies like low oxygen or air leaks (hull breaches on larger stations/vehicles), alerts for when under attack or entering lockdowns. As for paint, it doesn’t matter as much, but for some areas there are a few rules. recreational areas benefit from more warm colours, to recreate the cozy feeling. Industrial spaces benefit from more sterile colours with accents that clearly mark out the flow of the room, such as a white hanger with yellow markings on floors to indicate where vehicles are likely to roll through, or where is safe for you to walk. this helps to keep you aware of hazards without being obnoxious and reduces the overall clutter of the room. Accents are always a good thing, but their place is important. Ribs are good for an industrial look whereas “stations” help separate the work from the workspace. Something that flows or is consistent is far better than something that drastically changes. Flooring is generally a safe option, but brighter accents can look worse. Large transitions are something to be avoided unless making the structure of the space a part of that change, smaller archways/hallways and stairwells are good for transitions.

In relation to the antenna dish, how about a simple programmable block script that randomly moves the hinge and rotor a bit randomly every 30 seconds or so? Happy to try and write one if you're interested (I have no SE Scripting experience, but I do know programming in general)

Red light is used as it doesn't effect your night vision as much as any other colour, meaning that you can far more quickly swap from looking at your chart to looking at the horizon. It's still commonly used to this day, in fact the whole maritime industry relys on it. Also, side point but is the base starting to feel like it should have 'researcher' quarters and 'military' barracks for all the watchtowers and sandbags and drones ect? Just a thought 🙂

I do think you shouldn't cripple yourself. Keep it real so ice gives you half as much oxygen as hydrogen (H2O after all) but have the hydrogen yield on the same amount as new vanilla.

Since you have had issues with power running out in batteries before, I've come up with an idea. You could build a battery truck with about 6 large grid batteries and 2 flexible arms with either a mergblock or connector, in in large grid, the other in small. Then in the case of the panini to recharge it, just add a mergblock to it, connect it up and transfer the power like a fuel truck.

I think the tower and antenna dish came out nicely. I agree that the antenna should pause plus tilt up; especially tilting as it turns past the tower for clearance "line of sight" as it were. 38:31 I like how the LCD is changing and showing through the window. PS Capac statues err umm "Gargoyles" would be an interesting touch...

I wonder, even with the jetpack being largely ineffective in gravity, could you still use it to lay yourself sideways on the ground to attach blocks to low hanging superstructure?

I can indeed but there wasn't really a time for me to do that during this episode as the only low hanging parts were when I was deliberately not attaching to the grid since it was still mobile and I was setting up for the merge block shenanigans :P

@Splitsie : You can't change the image colours to the console one's, but you can use scripts/text and mimic the image one. Also, if you use an uneven number of timers, and set delays out of the fibunacci numbers (must test out how big the numbers vs. speed of the rotor/hinge) means your dish rarely be in the same spot twice (the more timers, the rarer the chance). Then, if you use 1 timer to reverse the rotor and another to reverse the hinge, you can use the same delay-timers for both.

You can change the colours of the scripts provided by Keen to get them green and light the room in red. There's a script by Whiplash that could help with your doors. It's for automatically closing doors and locking one airlock door if the other one is open. It works using a specific naming convention for doors. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=416932930

18:19 You could also slave the dish's rotor setup to a turret, so it simply spins about randomly. I don't know that timer scripts let you slow it, but it would possibly work. Additionally, you could set up a few timers on different times reversing the dish's spin, and one or two of them locking and unlocking the rotor, so it again turns in an interesting way. I would prefer the latter, it would also be a good use for that computer bank you made, or give you a reason to have a small outlying box of timer blocks with another turret connection. 33:29 I think the new vanilla is a good balance, since, as you said, it takes a lot of infrastructure to create, store and use hydrogen.

22:28 Splitsie, red lighting is used in the context of Submarines because if you need to go out on night watch, your eyes adjust to the dark faster if you have spent some time only seeing red light. My opinion on the O2/H2 generator is annoyance at the fact that it doesn't actually split into both products at once... in a game like this, magic matter transmutation just feels out of place.

Ships use red lighting because it is the color that least affects your night vision, and also carries the least distance - so lowest detection threshold, doesn't ruin your ability to see with the naked eye in low light. You aren't exactly hiding the base, so the low detection threshold isn't much of a deal-breaker, but you might want to be able to see outside well.
