Professional bodybuilding ALWAYS involves steroid use.

He had open heart surgery in the 90’s just before filming Batman and Robin.

He had congenital aortic valve disease - almost assuredly a bicuspid aortic valve. Steroids had nothing to do with this. He has not had a heart attack. He didn't have bypass surgery. He had an aortic valve replacement. Then he had a Ross procedure which is a surgery because the prosthetic valve failed as expected. The 3rd valve was a procedure called TAVR - not a surgery. He probably avoids the 2nd two valve procedures if he opted for a mechanical valve for his first surgery. The need for a pacemaker is quite common in patients with aortic valve disease. The fibers that allow the electrical signal to get to the bottom of the heart run right next to the aortic valve. Very common to need a pacemaker after aortic valve surgery or TAVR.

He is a life long smoker, maybe the steroids did not help, but smoking definitely would phuck him up.

His book: “The Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding,” was without a shadow of doubt, the most irresponsible and dangerous advice for young, natural bodybuilders. His program, which for example, included 25 sets of 8 - 12 reps of triceps exercises 3 x a week to failure (in between 25 sets of chest and 25 sets of back exercises 3 x a week + legs 3 x a week evening for around 30 sets = 6 days training for around 5 hours a day, was absurd!) The tiny section devoted to his bogus claims that the program was possible without steroids, and that bodybuilders used tiny doses before competition only was an outright lie! The governor of California wrote a book which would not only result in zero progress (due to inevitable overtraining for natural bodybuilders) but the potential for serious long term damage to any young people following his advice. And remember that book was written before Whey protein or creatine was even available. Yes Arnie I do have a problem with your disingenuous information.

Back in the early 80's in my neighborhood there was a bodybuilder who was obviously on steroids. Great guy & business owner. He was doing his morning jog at the local college track and had a fatal heart-attack. Because the heart is a muscle, the ventricles became enlarged from the steroids and contributed to his death. Sad.

Moving to America was Arnold,s best decision in his life. It is more than certain he would have died if he remained in Europe by now,America has the best medical doctors in the world, and Arnold is a legend.

He's 77. With his impaired heart, he won't last another five years, even with all his money. His good friend Franco Columbu died at 78. His training partner Dave Draper also died at 78. There have been many other steroid body builders who didn't live nearly this long. But living to be about 80 is not too bad. Average life expectancy for a U.S. man is 76.33 ; For a U.K man, it's 80.7.

Whatever he admitted to you can multiply by at least a factor of 3x. They all lie even when supposedly coming clean 😅

I've been using steroids and testosterone since the early 80's. Gave up steroids in my 50's, but still on a high dose of Testosterone. I'm fortunate that financially speaking I undergo numerous medical tests each year, very few are covered by insurance. At 63 years old my heart is as clean as a whistle. My cardiologist is the head of cardiology at one of the most prestigious heart hospitals in the US and he said I have no more calcification than a typical 30 year old. I have no biomarkers for cancer and all scans come back clean. Would I recommend steroids for everyone? Of course not. But, we don't drop all dead in our 50's either. One more note, one of the reasons that many body builders are living much longer is now most of them recognize that when you reach late 40's to 50's it's time to shed some of the muscle to take the workload off your heart. It's mentally tough to give up a lot of mass when you have always been big, but lugging around too much muscle is just as bad for an aging heart as lugging around too much fat. The aging bodybuilders that want to live a full life are dropping some muscle mass and becoming leaner.

Let him stop smoking and alcohol first then blame steroids

This is exactly why I love being a natural competitive (64) year old bodybuilder. I don’t have to drastically change my health in pursuit of having a healthy physique. The face of Bodybuilding needs to change! How many more Bodybuilders have to die, maybe due to steroids and other complications. It is totally out of control. Steroids don’t make champions. Champions will always be champions.

Steroids had nothing to do with his heart surgery... He had a heart condition since birth. His mother died cause of the same problem. Body building and steroids just made it come faster so je started to have problems earlier...

Always funny how a lot of people glamorize his era and say that Arnold used a lot less steroids than guys in modern age, which resulted in him staying healthy and still alive to this day. Sure, he probably did less gear than guys today, but people always fail to mention the multiple heart surgeries, dating all the way back to the 90's. Very rare that a human heart can stay normal and healthy, when you carry around the amount of muscle mass as he did in his prime.

I mean, if you think about how many bodybuilders and regular gym bro's take steroids vs how many die from heart failure that's (possibly) linked to the steroid use it's actually a VERY small percentage. So the claim that if you take steroids there's a good chance they will kill you doesn't really hold up, does it? Now, I'm not an advocate for taking steroids and have never taken them personally but I'm just looking at the facts logically. I don't believe taking steroids is in any way healthy but I certainly don't believe they're anywhere near as deadly as lots make out. Furthermore, the people exclaiming that steroids are so bad are usually drinkers of alcohol or smokers which is FAR more deadly than taking steroids! Funny old world we live in.

So what??? I know dozens of people in their 70's who have heart problems and never used steroids nor were strength athletes. 🙄

Him training as heavy as he did had an effect on the wear of the valve. But so would running or sitting behind the desk of a stressfull job. It's also something a medical expert could anticipate and check accordingly. Using HRT (hormone replacement therapy) involving testosteron always lead to a heart growth. It's a muscle like any other afterall. This might have played a minor role in why one valve moved and failed a bit earlier. If you miss a valve the corresponding chamber or side of the heart is also not fully developed. In that case HRT with 50-100mg of test would be a common treatment. So most likely and specifically in his case BB and mild dosage of testosteron helped his heart.

Anyone who knows Anything about Pro bodybuilders know that other than the very small % of Natural bodybuilders, All Pros take a mind boggling amount of 3-7 kinds of steroids at a time for 10+ years to even compete, let alone be good enough to be known as a top bodybuilder

Congenital bicuspid aortic valve. Definitely agree that steroids were not the main culprit. The pressure on the busted valve may have caused it to wear out fractionally quicker but not anything dramatic or existential. Arnold is lucky that there is the kind of science available and skills at the Cleveland Clinic to keep him alive.
