Acetaminophen is Tylenol. Or more accurately, Tylenol is Acetaminophen... Basically what is sounds like they are saying is that you should not take an NSAID (Non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drug). Tylenol isnt one of those. Glad to hear you're doing better. Good vid for information - Knowledge is power.
Thank you for being so honest about how hard it was. This "Best / Worst" experience makes you more relatable to the rest of us. Thank God for the help you had & that you are getting better. We Love You!
Just Wow, I really had no idea about dengue and how serious it can be! You shared some critical information!! Glad you survived and shared the knowledge! Very sorry for what you went through, truly sounds like hell!! hope no one has to go through such awfulness, but it is inevitable that people will but, now we will go into it a lot smarter, so thank you for sharing your horrific experience and May you start feeling more like yourself soon!
Glad you're doing well. I follow a handful travel vloggers (and those that live "off the grid" so to speak) and most usually don't go through any health crises, but when they do, it's a really bad one. I think that's one of the things that you guys kind of take for granted. And because most of you guys "appear" healthy or do not go through many health issues, symptoms tend to be brushed off and you tend to tough it out for too long. I think it's important to understand that when you're not a modern country that you should be prepared for health crises (a phone, research your symptoms, research health concerns of your location you're staying at). But, as a nurse practitioner, the best thing I can say which you are already doing is staying active every day and hydration, hydration, and hydration no matter where you are in the world. Here's some advice and tips for over the counter medications to have on hand. It's always great to have Tylenol (acetaminophen) and ibuprofen (Advil, Aleve, Motrin, etc). Benadryl is also still good to carry around because of it's anti-allergy affects which is what it is should be used for (anti-histamine). Honestly, those are the main 3 that I take wherever I travel. Tylenol - is an anti-fever medication (anti pyretic) and is for mild pain (can help with muscle and joint aches). Fever is the body's natural response to fight off infection a foreign body, but prolonged fever does more harm to your body than good which is why Tylenol should be taken if a fever persists. The main thing to look out for is liver toxicity (no more than 4 grams per day). Ibuprofen - is also an anti-fever medication and pain relief medication but affects the gut and also has affects on the kidneys and platelets (can cause and increase in platelet aggregation which increases your risk of developing a blood clot). Most common adverse effect of ibuprofen are stomach ulcers because of too much use. The affect on kidneys and platelets aren't seen as often, but can be present on chronic and/over use of ibuprofen. In your case with dengue fever, tylenol is a better option because your kidneys were/are likely acute injured and you want to avoid any medications that affect the kidneys if possible as opposed to taking Ibuprofen. Benadryl - as mentioned already is an anti-histamine which helps with allergies and nasal congestion. As you mentioned already, it essentially dries out your body and reduces allergic symptoms such as hives, itchiness, and swelling from like mosquito bite. The adverse affects is that it can cause acute kidney injury and urinary retention. With this, you end up not urinating, urinating very little, have concentrated urine, and if you truly are not urinating, the fluid in your body that is supposed to peed out ends up being retained in your body and you can see swelling in your lower legs and even around your abdomen area if severe. When it comes to over the counter flu/cold medication such as Dayquil, Nyquil, Robitussin etc etc and etc, most people don't understand that these over the counter medications are only for symptom relief. They do not treat the underlying cause. This means they contain ingredients similar to other over the counter medications. Dayquil and Nyquil as you had mentioned that you took actually contains diphenhydramine (benadryl) and acetaminophen. So you definitely were way over dosing on benadryl which likely had compounded affect on your kidneys on top of Dengue fever. Hope this advice and info helps! Side note, pee bucket works wonders. I drive quite a bit to work and I carry a pee bottle just in case so I don't have to pull over every time.
I said some prayers for you 🙏 I'm glad you're on your way to being much better. You learned alot about sickness and who your friends are. Man what a test. You passed congratulations bro. See you out there ~☆ thanks for getting with us.
We used to get dengue and malaria warnings when I lived in Philippines. I never got it, however I got some crazy food poisonings and worse was contaminated water deliveries. What’s interesting is when I first arrived, the mosquitoes would attack me from knees down only, and they were tiny ninja mosquitoes (no-see-em style) After all the good American dairy based fats retreated from body (6months in), I tasted like another Filipino 😂 the mosquitoes weren’t interested.
So sorry to hear about this man. Glad to hear you're on the mend. Looking forward to more videos. I didn't know about Dengue fever so now this is on my list of things to look out for. Sending good vibes from South US
Dan, do not rush your recovery. Stay out of the sun. Your liver, kidneys and brain are still enlarged, and you are highly susceptible to injuries and inflammation in all of your joints......My brother and I both got Dengue in Bonaire (wing foiling) during the same time frame as you. Bro got it about as bad as you, but we had good advice from a doctor by day 3, and I was there to take care of him, else he wouldn't have made it. He only took Tylenol every 4 hours (which we only found at one of the "Chinese" store). Dutch doctor said drink fluids that have "something in them", like broth, tea, lime, lemon, electrolyte powder, soda, but not just water. You still get dehydrated but not as bad as you. As soon as I knew it was Dengue, I preemptively took one, 12 mg Ivermectin, but I wish I had stayed on it. It has a half life of 3 days, so once a week is what they take in Africa to prevent Malaria. Two weeks later, and 3 days after returning home, I got sick. I immediately took 6mg Ivermectin every 12 hours, a total of 4 pills. I wish I had more on hand, but it was better than nothing..I had a mild fever 1 night, fatigue and back ache for 10 days, could eat and drink, but still lost 10 lbs. At about 15 days from 1st symptoms I'd say I was 100%, but still down 5 lbs. I got off easy. Not sure if it was the ivermectin, but its cheap and worth a try.
Dan, I'm the "other brother" noted in the post above, who got Dengue in Bonaire. My symptoms started on May 10th. I was flat in bed for 10 days. On day 11, I could start to walk around a little. Day 13 was our travel day to fly back home and I did OK. The Post Dengue Syndrome (fatigue, weakness and impaired brain function) stayed with me longer. My mind cleared up on Day 38. It's now day 45 and I feel pretty darn good, but my strength and stamina are not 100%. When we were in Bonaire, talking to other locals, Dengue is definitely going around. The doctor that I saw on my Day 3 was good and spoke english (It's a dutch Island, they all speak 5 languages!). He said Dengue started only several months ago. This is my 3rd year visiting and this year they have a new big sign about Dengue on the road near the main grocery store. Regarding hydration, the doctor said that plain water is not helpful. It needs to have electrolytes. I was not able to "chug" liquids like you were. I could barely take sips due to feeling nausea (I never vomitted though). I had trouble eating or drinking anything. I tried many things and the best was a simple lemon squeezed into water. I also boiled carrots, then drank the broth. I only took tylenol, 3 pills every 4 hours and it helped noticeably.
I wasn't on a boat but back packing around Thailand in the early 1990's caught dengue and ended up a week in hospital, just the fcat I got to hospital was a huge relief and mentally uplifting. I was in my early 20's then but boy did I shed some weight.
Great video as always, great details, what an experience, so glad you are still among the living and sure will be back at adventures soon. Truly. Great warning, reminder to take precautions and inspiration! Thanks again Dan!!!
Glad to hear you are okay and doing better, found your channel about a month ago and have been loving it! I really love the walkthroughs it really helps with my life choices and maybe future life choices. I will say a prayer for you. God bless you on your incredible journey!
I'm in the same town as Dan and it's been rumored for close to a year that there was a Dengue outbreak in the south of the country...where it's wetter and there are a lot more mosquitos. Dengue was not something anyone (locals included) talked about in the north part of the country where it's fairly dry and during the summer, downright arid. Well, we just concluded the rainy season here and had more rain than probably the past four years combined. It was wet, and there were a sh*t ton of mosquitoes in some areas. Not surprised that Dan got it, and I hope everyone else is careful. It *should* drop off now that it's hotter and drier, but precaution is never a bad thing.
I had Dengue Fever twice. Once in the Yucatan and again in Curacao. The first time I was in the hospital for ten days. I was non-operational for about a month afterwards and my immune system was destroyed for at least a couple years. I got sick over and over again. Eight years ago, after suffering some other health issues, despite thinking that because I was very active that I was healthy, I dumped all of the highly inflammatory animal products and adopted a whole foods plant based diet. I haven't even had the sniffles since then. If we want to get healthy, we need to start being more honest with ourselves and take the poison out of our lives. The good news is that Luperon is a fantastic place for fresh fruit and vegetables! No need to take vitamins when we eat life, instead of death. Wishing you a swift recovery Dan!
I had a small stroke several months ago and was told I had to take stattins for the rest of my life, I won't feed pharma so decided to change my diet, all natural if it has ingredients their natural..I've lowered my cholesterol naturally, lost weight healthy, feels great beating the docs n big pharma
That's great to hear Ian! I used to be wicked with the knives and barbs like Adventureman Dan here. Then, after a decade of laying waste to the last remaining life on the reef-- and a voyage back to civilization to find a doctor, I learned about karma and The Golden Rule. At 52, and nearly 9 years into WFPB living with a strong vegan ethic, there is nothing in my life that I have found more redeeming. I hope more people-- especially energetic ocean adventurers like Dan, can make that same connection soon. Ocean animals really need our advocacy now more than ever. Cheers to good living!
And as a vegetarian for 25 years, in my fifties with bone loss, hormone issues due to lack of nutrition, fats etc., Constant problems, weakness, sickness, I went carnivore (and eat ethically... ) And all my issues started to improve immediately. You really think that current agricultural practices don't kill all the wild life that is used for farming? Once you see the destruction of agriculture, you'll maybe get off your high horse
Ahh, so you' were a vegetarian, so you still consumed the breast milk intended to turn a 50 pound baby calf into a 500 pound cow-- and also has been shown to contribute to bone loss, with Western countries topping the charts with osteoporosis. As someone who was very skeptical of a plant based diet myself, I didn't commit to the change until I learned that according to the American Dietetic Association-- the largest and most respected dietary association on the planet, that a diet devoid of animal products can be safe for anyone, including infants, the elderly, and even pregnant women. There are now many vegan athletes and body builders who are crushing it including Olympic Gold Medalists. As far as ethics go-- and again, you are talking to a former serious slaughterhound, how can it be ethical to abuse and exploit others when it is now becoming clear that we don't have to in order to live happy and healthy lives. I have personally witnessed enough dead zones and dead reefs to have formed strong personal convictions about this. I grew up in a dairy and pig farming family, so I am very familiar with how animal agriculture works. We need to grow more than ten times as much plant food to feed to livestock as we would if we just ate the plants themselves. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation, water table depletion, and ocean dead zones. The good news is, we can all thrive on a plant based diet. Hopefully more people will start investigating this. I would really like to see our ocean animals recover-- especially considering all of the damage that I inflicted before I was made aware of all these issues.
I dont know that I will. I don't feel I was knock down far enough to make it worth the time to document. I figure a week and I'll be nearly back to 100%.
Excellent video. Totally think you're awesome for sharing and caring about others. And of course you're going to have so many people who want to help you... You're amazing
Sorry for your pain and misery. Great info. Take your rest and recover. Can't you make a full plan on what to do and what to bring for these kind of situations please. Yes, the crazy recurring dreams when you have a fever are so annoying and tiring. Yes I get the community thing and why you get emotional about it. It will take time. You have learned the most valueable lesson in life because of this. You will be gratefull that this has happened. Take care, greetings, Jeroen
Shit dude, sorry to hear you went through that! Didn't realize it's around in Luperon. I witnessed it (thankfully didn't get bitten by the rotten mozzie) when 3 of our crew including the captain went down with Dengue after departing Bora Bora en route to Am Samoa. F*****N Nightmare!!!
My brother… Karen and I both went through it here in Sint Maarten. There were at least 4 others in the boatyard that had it too. It felt like all my joints were filled with sand and on fire. A week and a half before venturing out of the boat. And another 2 weeks before back to normal. It suuuuuuuuucked!
Hi Dan, Happy to learn you’re still with the living. I’m curious (as a prior contractor for OBO/DOS) could a US Citizen reach out to the local Consulate? I’m uncertain we have a policy to aid traveling citizens; however, a staff employee might have provided assistance. It’s a stretch (God knows) but you never know unless you ask. Anyway, I’m happy you’re in good spirits. PSA, get your passport shot record up to date. Safe travels! ☮️
Be careful because too much water drank quickly can also kill you. According to the The American Chemistry Society, it takes about 6 litres of water to kill a 75kg person. According to Scientific American, water intoxication has occurred in people who challenge themselves to water drinking contests, or athletes who over-hydrate when training. Definitely add electrolytes to the water to mitigate the risk.
I did have a question about whether Tylenol should be used, as I know Tylenol is acetaminophen but you said no Tylenol but yes to acetaminophen?? I saw other comment and think I understand that acetaminophen (Tylenol)is ok but was hoping for a clarification, if you could?!! Thank you!!
Both Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin (ibuprofen) are used to "relieve pain and reduce fever". Do not take Motrin for Dengue, only Tylenol. These are U.S. brands. When I had Dengue in May in Bonaire, the doctor told me to take only acetaminophen (the main ingredient in Tylenol brand). But you can't get Tylenol everywhere. Acetaminophen (US Adopted Name) is also called Paracetamol (International Nonproprietary Name), which is sold under brand names Calpol and Panadol. Avoid ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, and Nurofen) because it can act as a blood thinner (or something, I am not an expert), which is a bad thing if you have Dengue.
Ok, I'm on the Dan plan. Adventure and much of it solo. So, I'm sure you take precautions to avoid mosquitos, but were they bad or just a few got through to you?
i have had dengue and all i remember from it is laying in bed for multiple days. Drinking gatorade and similar drinks. Edit: You are SPOT ON regarding hydration, you HAVE TO drink a lot of water or like i said gatorade. When i got it i had a whole 24 pack of gatorade next to my bed.
It's good to see that you pulled through. Back in 20013 there was like 22 cases in Martin County Florida. You said it, person to person from mosquito bites. Tourist locations.. Even a few cases this year in Miami was from tourist. That's the same for the 2013 cases, travelers. It's awesome, that community you became apart of. Stay safe!
A condom catheter would be less invasive, easy to use and available without a nurse. We don't always have what we need at the time. I'm so glad you made it.
Its our choice if you want to suffer from a disease or the side effects of a medicine, which can be worse, specially in todays mrna vaccines.Nobody knows what happens exactky when mrna goes into the blood and everywhere into the body.Todays vaccines are not the same like we got as kids. Read the descriptions and listen to all sides, not just medical allopathy but everyone. Its your body you deal with. God bless you
100% .. use Natural Remedies, flush the body.. had a few "Flu,s over years...3 days hot cold flushes, soaking 4 set of clothes , lay on sofa 3 days drank tea, lemon ginger...smoked,slept, drank smoked slept no food.. sweated it out......then good..... had 2-3"times same shit.....same solution...🙏💪😎
