Surviving The Deadliest 2-Player Game

Get an intro to the math of Russian Roulette with "Surviving the Deadliest Game": • Surviving The Deadlies...
We know from “Surviving the Deadliest Game” that there’s no more dangerous game than Russian Roulette. And is there any game stupider than a duel in which two people stand there and shoot at each other? No -- so what happens when you combine them?!
Legendary scientific thinkers Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison are about to find out as their balloon avatars battle it out for electrical supremacy.
In this scenario, there’s only one single gun that Edison and Tesla pass back and forth for each shot. Can that game actually be fair if someone can go first and win on the first shot? If the first player has a probabilistic advantage, how much is it?
Is it possible for us to adjust the game in such a way that the first player’s advantage is a lot more fair? Can you EVER have a perfectly fair turn-based game when it’s possible for a player to win on the first turn?
Oh, and there’s actually a way that you can use your phone as a random number generator to simulate a Russian Roulette game in a perfectly safe way.
We thought The War of the Currents was over, but it won’t be decided until today. Edison and Tesla will enter Vsauce2. Only one will leave.

The Russian roulette I heard is a different version: Instead of shooting at their rival the one who goes first shoot his own head instead and then hand the pistol to his rival for his suicidal turn _without re-spin_ and so does the rival will hand it back without spinning the cartage again if he survives. And there is a trick for this version of roulette: if you goes first and you survived the 5th shot, instead of handing the revolver to your rival for his suicidal turn, do him a favor by shoot him directly because chances are as soon as he loaded the 6th guaranteed shot he will cheat by immediately point the gun at you and fire.

fun fact about Duels: they were very formally done, and they were made specifically so that odds are, assuming it even got to shooting, neither of them died by having the barrel of the gun be very small, causing the bullet to bounce around in it, and, most duels in the first place never even got to the shooting, people tend to assume that duels were informal, but in reality, there was a whole process, basically, if your pride was challenged, you would challenge the person to a duel, assuming they don't back down, you pick your second, who is there to basically there to just talk to the other second and try and resolve the issue, so the seconds are essentially peacemakers, then you have a doctor on site, turned around, etc etc, like I said, there's a lot of formalities, and few even got to the shooting

You could make the NFL coin flip much closer to even with a simple change... the team that wins the coin flip would still have a 52% chance to win, but if you made it so the team that lost the coin flip only had to tie to win you'd get them up to 48%. It would also create an interesting choice... let the team that wins the coin toss decide to either receive, in which case they have to win to win, or to receive, in which case they would win or tie to win. That could create an interesting tactical decision. A team with a really strong defense might choose to kick with their only goal being to stop the other team from scoring.

Wouldn't it be even better to use the sequence ETTETEETTEETETTETEETETTEETTETEET I guess it's called the “fair-share sequence” (that's what I read in another comment) You can generate it by starting with E and then forever replacing each E by ET and each T by TE Or you can by putting the same sequence you already have behind it and flipping the E's and T's
@ivanzlatev9298
@ivanzlatev9298 3 года назад
@@andermium You can also define this sequence in another, maybe a little more complicated way: take the sequence cscccscscscccscccscccscscscccsc It is defined in the following way: You start with c, then write s and repeat the sequence before it, then write c and repeat the sequence, then write s and repeated it, then write c and repeated it, and so on. Now you start with E and every time there is c - change the letter, every time there is s - it stays the same.

@@ivanzlatev9298 I've wrote a short script in python to optimize the game - where each round the player less likely to have won so far takes a shot. Edison's turns are represented with 1's, Tesla's with 0's. Got the following sequence: 1001011001100110011001011001100110011001101001100101100110011001... Turned it to hexa for a more compressed representation: 9666659999a65999a5a6665a659999a659a665a65a5a. When stopped, the difference between their chances to win is ~1.55e-15 (in Tesla's favour surprisingly), and the chance for a tie is ~9.6e-15). Obvious patterns are hard to find, though it does start along with ETTE-TEET-TEET and then breaks out and even presents other viable 4-turn-blocks: 5=TETE, a=ETET

@EebstertheGreat
@EebstertheGreat 3 года назад
6:18 You don't clarify that Edison and Tesla have to spin the barrel between every shot (so that the length of the game is still unbounded). Otherwise, the game would always end at the latest when a player got 6 shots, and the probabilities would be ratios of small(ish) integers. Tesla would have a 169/324 probability of winning, or about 52.16%, and the game would always end after at most six rounds. But with your unbounded game, there is no closed form expression for the probability of a win. It has an infinite series representation in terms of exponentials of odd triangle numbers, and Wolfram|Alpha says it's about 52.3919% for Edison to win.

So much scrolling and still didn’t see a comment about the music! It’s “Rhapsody in Blue” by American composer George Gershwin, a masterpiece in jazz/“classical” fusion, written in less than a month! Great choice for this video! 🎶

What are the odds if player one goes first once, then for the rest of the game each player will have two chances each turn? this way P1 advantage is that he gets the first try but it is compensated by giving P2 the first 2 chance turn

They each had a 16.67% chance of winning each time you pulled the trigger. No matter what because you randomized the chamber each pull of the trigger.
@Shoarma2
@Shoarma2 Год назад
Yes, each turn there is a 16.67%. Same with dice logic, if you already hit 6 on a dice six different times, you still have a 16.67% chance on getting another 6 regardless of the times you've already thrown 6. However, hitting 6 seven times in a row has a different chance than already having had 6 six times in a row and currently being on your 7th. So to make maths a bit shorter, lets just show all the possibilities for just 2 shots: Each row has a 16.67% chance of happening, the final row only having a 6, because a shot happened. 11 12 13 14 15 16 21 22 23 24 25 26 31 32 33 34 35 36 41 42 43 44 45 46 51 52 53 54 55 56 6 The second shot being a 6 on its own has a 16.67% chance of happening, but that specific combination is a lot less likely to happen in the whole chart, as it only has 3% chance of happening in that specific order. For ANY shot to happen within 2 tries, we're at 30.55%. 16.67% of those happening on the first shot, leaving 13.89% chance of it happening on the second shot.

You can also assign the shots like this: Edison, Tesla, Tesla, Edison, Edison, Tesla, Tesla... If my math is not wrong this gives Edison a 50.8% chance of winning, making his first-turn advantage even smaller. I think I've heard of some games using this strategy but I can't remember which (chess maybe?)

The actual chance of fireing the bullet is lower that 16.7%. It is caused by the additional gravitational force caused by the bullet in the chamber. When pulling the trigger, gun fires the bullet located in the top chamber. When the barrel is spinned, bullet inside the chamber is more likely to be pulled down towards the ground due to its mass as other chambers are empty - significantly decreasing the chance to end up at the top facing the trigger. This might even explain why the game played with the nerf gun lasted much longer then the expected 6 shots.

To spin the barrel after every shot isn't the real rule,as far as i know. If the barrel is spun every time the probability to lost in the game is 16.66 % every time But if the Barrel isn't spun after each turn, the probability becomes 16.66%,20%,25%,33.33%,50%,100 % ..... Peace ✌🏼

to make it 50/50 it has to be spinned once a round. Edison spins, Tesla shoots without spinning. It makes game perfectly 50/50.

The lubrication of the revolver and weight of the bullet can also play a factor, as gravity will pull the bullet downward and away from the chamber.
@Ta2edfreak

With a regular game, (not spinning the cylinder) your first shot is the advantage (if pointed at someone else). The odds go up after that. When you spin the cylinder each time, your odds remain the same, no matter how many times you are allowed to shoot. Technically you reset the odds each time. Of course if you get unlimited tries, you're bound to hit your chance eventually but getting that first opportunity is the only real advantage.
@stock_movie1875
@stock_movie1875 2 года назад
note in russian roulette. when there's 2 or more people participating the chamber is NEVER spun unless it has been fired. then the gun is reloaded and spun until there is only 1 person left standing. so he already modified it to spin the chamber every shot which creates an unfair advantage to who goes first that is greater than its normal ruling.
