I have been researching the CGM all over internet. I like your videos best and I'll tell you why I like them: - you speak in a normal pace voice. Not too fast so I can't absorb infor and you are not a slow talker, some people just speak slow without inflection. - when you demonstrate products you show them to the camera long enough to get a look at them. I appreciate you using drug store brands, it is more practical for those of us who are starting out getting to know our hair.
That's okay! Let it be. What's it gonna hurt to be frizzy on your off day. If any thing was said to you, especially after you explain you're letting your hair rest, that person is probably not a friend. 😝 on them! 🤗🤗🤗
If you do the Curly Girl routine (The REAL Curly Girl routine; most of what you see on RU-vid is actually modified Curly Girl, which doesn't make it bad but it's not the actual method) you will find yourself using a lot less product but having a lot less frizz. Get the book and study it!! It took me almost 5 years to be able to do it 100%. I no longer do it because I dye my hair but if I ever let it go gray, I will go right back to it. My hair was never so beautiful and frizz-free! And so much less expensive!
Seeing your transition pics is SO inspiring! They look so much like what my hair does whenever I try CGM for a few weeks. I always give up because I think my hair just isn't curly enough to justify the work and it looks fine when I don't do anything with it. My biggest challenge is always being able to look professional during the transition!
Half and half cocoa powder and cornstarch for brunettes. Applied with a makeup brush. You don’t have to rub it in if you use a make up brush. Finger coiling is helpful during transition when every curl clump wants to do something different. It works best if you use a styling product with good slip.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney you could try to just dont wash your hair with shampoo for over a week. And yes your hair will get very greasy and you will want to watch it, but TRUST me. After this your hair will know like "oh she isnt stripping my oils so I dont have to creat more oils to counteract" I couldnt go 1 day without washing my hair with shampoo it it would be greasy AF then I just stopped with washing it at all for about two weeks and went to some creasy f hell and just wore my hair up for most of the time but when I came at the end of the first week a saw that my hair actually wasnt that creasy anymore, and this went on for the whole other week to. Now i can go on for over more than a week without washing my hair with shampoo and it not getting creasy at all. It truely is SO amazing. My hair looks so much better and healthier now because of this. ps: sorry for the terrible spelling. My 1st language isnt english and I am typing pretty fast as well. I hope you can look over it :)
My tip: get a moderately-priced combo of cleanser/conditioner/styler, and then, when you're ready to try something new, change ONE thing at a time. In the beginning, I drove myself insane trying different products, brands, and styling techniques every wash day. Of course it took me longer to learn what my hair needs!Another survival strategy (and I'm totally serious!) Get yourself a striking pair of earrings or a bold lipstick shade. On those days when your hair turns out disastrous, pin it back, and throw on your stunning lipstick or fabulous earrings. People will have something else to take in first, before they can even notice that your hair decided to misbehave.
Haha, I'm currently in that phase of going insane buying too many products! It's hard when you're starting out and clicking on so many videos and seeing so many different "holy grail" products, I feel like I need them all. Now I'll have three or four gels sitting in my cabinet. Oops!
I'm only a couple months into becoming a CG and at times, it feels impossible. Its SO easy to get overwhelmed and frustrated when things don't work out like I hoped, so I REALLY needed this boost of encouragement. Thank you, Courtney!! 😊
I’ve been trying to transition for the past 3 almost 4 months now and it just feels like nothing’s happening! I’m getting so frustrated but seeing your before pics which are so similar to my hair now is giving me so much hope, thank youu!!
I started my curly girl journey about 2 and a half weeks ago! I'm really excited to see what my hair becomes! However I have 2b/2c waves in the front and in the back it's practically straight! I've been learning a lot of patients with the CGM lol
this was exactly my problem and i tried everything to fix it but nothing worked. but i cut my hair short and it made a huuuge difference. i know no ones wants to do it but sometimes its the only option
Did you say day 17?!!! Not washing hair for 17 days is a bit of a stretch for anyone. Also I could not go out in public Product free. I would look like Hagrid
Glad you mentioned making dry shampoo. I make my own dry shampoo for brown hair. Cocoa powder, tapioca starch, (or corn) and a couple of capsules of activated charcoal. Perfect for my ash brown hair.
Actually amazing tips and went in an unexpected direction (was expecting more hair care tips) - so encouraging and practical without being condescending. Love it.
Great tips!!! And so fun to see all the comments of those embracing their natural hair! I'm almost 6 months in and it took me about 2 months to "get the hang of it" I'm still figuring it out mind you and I didn't have super damaged hair to begin with. Thank you Scrunchies! For saving my day multiple times! Bobby pins, headbands anything to help you through! And.....like Courtney said, learn to laugh at yourself and stop taking it so seriously, it's just hair after all! And on those good days....rock it!
Your videos are my GO TO for the CGM! I think we have a very similar curl pattern! When you show how your hair looked when u first started that’s pretty much how mine looks! I know everyone’s hair is different but I’m hoping ours is similar, the swavy hair😂 I’m about a month in and I’m loving the results so far! U keep me motivated to keep going! Love ur vids! Keep it up!
Melanie halfacre I’m staring my transition today. Today was the first day I washed and applied curly hair products. Waves (some curls) have started to form this early. Did this happen to you?
You can DIY dry shampoo - Arrowroot powder (avoids any issues with corn) you can add essential oils for fragrance - I'd suggest Rosemary + Peppermint - or Arborvitae You can also add a little cacao powder if you have very dark hair!
FYI for the dark-haired curly girls: fine rice flour works great as a dry shampoo on dark hair because rice flour turns clear once it has absorbed moisture! My hair is about a level 4 neutral brown and I put it in at night before bed to wake up to nice dry roots in the morning!
I am so grateful for this video because that is literally how my hair looks today. After washing and styling, I'm going where the heck on my pretty curls?! Why are they coming out nicer!? Good to know that even you looked like me at one point!
I know this video is old and you probably won’t see this comment but I’m SO glad I found it! I’m about a month into gcm and my hair has been looking a lot like the transition pictures you posted in this video. I’ve been getting discouraged especially after looking at pictures from 4 years ago when my hair was beautifully wavy without me trying. I needed to see this encouragement to keep going ♥️
your hair in those early transition pictures look EXACTLY LIKE MINE RIGHT NOW. i never thought i could possibly have curly hair because it brushes out so easily, but it hit me that my dad has curly hair (it’s been buzzed for decades) and my mom has very thick wavy hair that she probably never tried to get curls out of (and it’s been VERY short for decades). my hair is wavy and tangly when it’s wet which recently made me realize that probably means something. its bleached and colored and feels like straw when I do the curly girl method but i am DETERMINED. since starting this method and using curly hair products I’ve stopped losing hair in the shower. and for YEARS i was losing CLUMPS every shower and i thought it was hormones! now i barely lose anything! thank you for your AMAZING videos!
I clicked on this so fast! Lol 😂 Thanks so much for the advice Courtney!! It’s getting easier to shrug at my hair when it’s being wimpy but I still have those days when I’m like... why??? 😂 So thank you for reminding me to stick in there! I’m glad you mentioned going product free more often. To be honest, I don’t know the last time I’ve seen my hair without product and I’m excited to touch base with it in that way! ♥️♥️♥️
Your channel has been my hair lifeline. I've been doing the cg method for about 3 months now and most days I still look like a fuzz ball. Your channel gives me hope. I just got a haircut today and it's looking ever so slightly better. You are a God send, Courtney 💜
Tip....if u have brown hair.... 50/50 mix with cornstarch, babypowder or arrowroot powder --- and cocoa powder. Like for baking not nesquik ***arrowroot powder is my preference but its hard ro find n more expensive (health food store) Just brush it on with a makeup brush. Dont get it on ur scalp tho bc it will turn darker n be more niceable. I store mine inside the cocoa coontainer...tip....tap off the brush prior so i dont get top much kn there.
I just told my husband a little while ago (I’m 2 days in) that this is a lot harder than what I normally do. (I’m a wash/and throw it up girl) that this is a lot harder to do than it looks
Thank you thank you!! I put off starting the CGM for a long time because of my fine, wavy hair, that was so frizzy yet got so greasy if I didn't wash it every day. Seeing your beautiful results knowing we have similar hair has made me really excited to do this! :)
I can't express how helpful this video was. I also feel like you are brave in showing us what your hair looks like without product- the difference is honestly amazing. You keep all of us going!! Finally subscribed after watching many of your videos, haha.
I've been watching all your videos and your first tip is so so helpful. As someone who NEVER used product or blowdried their hair it's a big lifestyle transition!
You can also use either tapioca or arrowroot powder for dry shampoo if you're allergic to corn. Some people add cinnamon and/or cocoa powder to it in an amount that will be similar to their haircolor.
Your hair is soooo shiny! I would kill for hair that shiny naturally. My hair is completely the opposite...dull, dry, frizzy, fly-away. ❤️ your channel!!
Just wanted to say thank you! Your directions are so clear and concise. Debunking the curly girl method can feel slightly overwhelming but you’ve put my mind at ease so thank you 🙏
This makes me feel better. On the weekends, I will take breaks. So on Saturday and Sunday, nothing. I wanted to make sure that was okay. Because I just can’t keep it up all the time at the moment. Thank you! My hair still looks the same. Frizzy and sorta wavy. But it is SOO much softer since beginning this process. I still go 3-4 days in between washes. Used to, I could only go 2-3 days. However, I have a low porosity hair. I used to use baby powder in high school for dry shampoo! But sometimes I wouldn’t mix it in enough and it looked lighter. 😂😂😂
I love that you're so honest about everything and how you laugh it off when things don't go quite what you want! I'm about 2 weeks into being a curly girl and it's harder than I expected, but I'm holding on!!
I’m so happy that I found your channel ! I’ve never seen anybody have the EXACT same hair texture as I do !! But here I am !! Seeing someone have the exact same texture !! Your videos are awesome and SOOO helpful !! Thank you !!
So needed this video today, having the worst wash day since I started a few months ago. My hair is totally acting like in the pics you showed, so glad to see those pics! There's hope!
Super inspirational (and timely, personally speaking)! Thank you for providing useful, honest, and real information in such a cheery way! So glad I found you!!!
Tip for applying baby powder as dry shampoo (I did it in high school as it was cheap) if you put it in a container (I used to use an old makeup container personally) you can use a fluffy powder brush that’s meant for makeup and get a really fine coating that absorbs oil and doesn’t make your head look as snowy. I’ve been using this for years and only occasionally use spray dry shampoo now and that’s usually when I get it given to me :) hope that my tips help someone out!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I just started the CGM about a month ago and I was getting so frustrated I was ready to quit this morning. I can't give my hair the time and energy it needs to style it in the morning before work, especially since I don't have the routine down yet. Thank you so much for the tips and encouragement! It was perfect timing!
I actually feel that I am putting LESS work into my hair while using the curly girl method because I would shoer (with REALLY expensive shampoo & conditioner meant for straight hair, so that my hair would be kinda smooth.. kinda worked) and then I would blow dry my hair, then I would straighten my hair for about 15 mins
My day 2 no product hair looks like Don King. Your day 2 hair is very straight and what my straightened day 2 hair used to look like. But it was good to see this video because I now realize that we have very different hair and that the products you use do not work on my hair type. Most of those products contain a good amount of protein, which makes my hair look stringy and feel dry and brittle. Took me awhile to figure out my hair responds better to protein-free products. I'm still in the transition phase, but my hair is lighter, has more waves, is bouncier, and feels so much better. I'm also one of the weird ones that can wash my hair daily and clarify once a week. I do appreciate all your videos and seeing how the CGM has transformed from when I first discovered it in 2011 and had my Deva cut from Devachan in NY. Unfortunately, I could never get my hair to look like that day ever again and now I realize it's because of how heavy and protein-laden most CG products are.
4th wash day using modified CG method here... I’m so glad I came across this video because I am definitely getting discouraged. I can never diffuse it correctly and never clump it correctly. I have 2/a waves now... but i feel there’s more potential due to former damage. But I haven’t died my hair in 1 year and I’ve cut it 2 times so far.
I agree. My hair was so soft and curly the first days but it turns freezy after a week. Honestly, I can see how wrong I treated my hair. I've been straightened it for almost 8 years . 😅
OMG love your channel!!! I just started the CGM in Taiwan and it feels overwhelming at times! Watching your videos makes me feel like I am learning from a friend. Thanks for all of the step by step explanations and for being so positive and supportive! You rock
Thanks. Im completely clueless when it comes to hair/styling. Im finding this to be SO much work. I used a diffuser (black orchid) for the first time today. While I was doing it for 30min and still was quite damp I started question if I want to continue this. Also, doesnt help that Im retraining myself NOT to touch my hair. I love playing with my hair.
i started the curly girl method 3 and a half weeks ago so i reallyyyy needed this video! i recently had moisture overload so i felt very discouraged with my hair. i wanted to start my curly girl journey in the summer before school so when i go back my hair won’t look like a mess
Thank you for all your tips and trick and encouragement! I just started my transition a few weeks ago and I feel ALL the ways! lol Im already pretty stubborn and I just want healthy hair, so im gonna keep pushing, but man watching a few of videos everyday REALLY help keep me not get discouraged.
Courtney you must be reading my mind! This is the second video in a row that addresses exactly what I had been pondering! 😀 I am on day 9 of my journey and whoo is it frustrating. I will persevere though. I am off to get a hair chop this afternoon.....wish me luck!
Good luck, Susan! I cut off about 5 inches of my hair after a couple of months of trying the CGM...at first, I felt major regret about bringing my hair up to chin length, but I honestly believe it sped up both my learning curve and the rate in which my hair took to my efforts.
Your hair is so shiny and pretty I hope my ends up that way in the end. Right now it is more wild and frizzy than anything but I am keeping with the program. I usually go pretty much product free every weekend if I have no plans. Basically a quick cowash to to remove the week's products and infuse a little moisture then leave in. No styling or diffusing.
Yes! I just started my wavy journey a month ago, my hair is so dry and limp from being colored. It looks like the first picture you showed of your hair. I'm going to schedule a chop for those dry ends, hopefully that will help! Your content has helped me so much, keeps me encouraged that I can have the hair I want!
Your videos are SO helpful and informative! I just began my curly hair journey and was just wondering if I'm hindering my progress at all by giving my hair a break. Thank you for this!
I know we all watch your videos for your hair inspiration but would you please do a video on your makeup? It always looks so pretty and I would love to know what colours you use!
I love your vids but at 11:05 when you have both the pics up and just your mouth showing, I don’t know why but that cracked me up! Lol thanks for all the info, being able to laugh at yourself and teaching others to do the same.
I have very dark brunette hair and I have used baby powder successfully often and did not need to add any coco powder for any darker haired gals that are worried 😁 Just use smaller amounts and build on it until you get the desired feel/look, you can always add more, but you can't take away 😉
Thank you, I enjoyed this. I like the product free days idea. I have found that the less product I use, the better I like my hair, even if it doesn't give me much curl or definition.
Oh man seeing you’re before photos gives me hope!! I’m three weeks in and it’s already way better but still not clumpy like yours at all. I’ve begun thinking my hair just doesn’t like to clump. But seeing your before photos makes me think it’s possible!
Just started my curly girl journey last week!! (I’m 17) and even though I know it takes time and trial and error, it can be frustrating to not see results (esp when I feel like I’m doing stuff wrong)!! Thanks for this video and all the tips, I will be sure to use them :)
Hang in there! Just remember: it's a Journey, not a destination. Hair is just like life, just about the time we think we've got it figured out, it changes! You're not doing anything wrong, just remember what Alexander Bell said about failure (paraphrasing here) "I've figured out 1000 ways how Not to do it!" 🤗🤗🤗
I have watched several of your videos. You are so funny and remind me of one of my friends. I do not really have damaged hair. Because I always had straight hair I have been a lazy styler. Suddenly my hair is growing in with bends. Some strands are even legit curls but once I air dry it's way less bendy. And I don't know what to do with it! I have fine hair, medium density, and apparently high porosity. I typically didn't use conditioner because it makes my roots sore. Maybe every third wash I'd put conditioner on the ends. Thanks to your explanation in another video I grabbed a silicone free conditioner and I'm shocked how light my hair felt after drying. Seeing your air dried "unstyled" hair has given me major inspiration to try some of the stylers you've shown. Long post short, thanks for showing your natural air dried hair!
Wow, my hair right now is like the pictures you clipped on the video (only 10 days so far with CGM), so my hopes are up! 😂😂👍🏻Thanks for all the videos and tips! 😉
My hair is typically a frizzy mess so even the transition hair is an improvement, I started actually doing a modified CGM (the best I can for now) about two weeks ago and there's already a huge difference
You are a godsend! ❤ I'm honestly pretty frustrated already - and the floor in my tiny tiny bathroom is getting more and more slippery by the day 😅 I should probably update my cleaning routine so it keeps up with my hair routine 🤔
I know this is an older video, but it helped me so much so I had to comment. I'm on week 1 and my hair looks like your before photos. It'll look amazing until I scrunch out the crunch - then it's sort of curly, wavy, stringy, and straight at the ends in some places. Looks so weird! I keep wanting to quit, but straightening my hair is ruining it and my hair is so unhealthy. My hair is fine, but I have a lot of it, and it eats up conditioner like crazy and takes 10 years to dry. Thanks for giving me some ideas to cope during this transition period ❤️
Just started today and I already see a difference. Went from frizzy 1b-2b, and became 2b all-over just from washing it in the right way with the same products 😂
Thank you for this video, I started the curly girl 1 month ago and yes am very confused, I cannot afford to go out and buy lots of different products at the moment so am buying the odd product as I go and also trying out what works. Knowing the tips from this video have helped me want to keep going and actually relieve the pressure of doing the routine every wash and I shall now go product free regularly. Still unsure what my hair actually needs but it’s all trial and error. Thank you again x
