2 owner barn find from southwest Ohio.
1 of 200 coupes produced before the shut down of all US auto production in February 1942. This is # 19 of 200. Mostly original except for the paint that was put on in the mid to late 1960s. If you remember seeing this car at car shows or LCOC meets, please let me know in the comments section. Thanks and enjoy the video.

I had the privilege of driving a 1948 Continental. Not too peppy, but easy to shift and steer. I loved the hydraulic window lifts.

They are very nice cars. I agree they could have had a little more power but they really run smoothly.

Greg, thanks for putting this video of your car on RU-vid. You noted the "Liquimatic" name on the glove compartment door. That was Lincoln's attempt at a semi-automatic transmission. Sadly, it was a failure. Very few were put in cars to begin with and they all failed fairly quickly. I think they were all installed in January, 1942. As far as I know, none are know to survive in a car. The bell housing for the Liquimatic was different than the manual transmission and so the back of the engine block was different. When the Liquimatic had to be replaced with a manual transmission, so did the engine, to accommodate the replacement transmission. The Liquimatic is almost certainly no longer in your car; however, you have a fairly rare '42 Continental since it still has the glove box door. That was normally changed when the engine and transmission were. I have heard that a couple Lincolns are known to still have the "Liquimatic" glove box door like yours. Maybe your car is one of them. At any rate, the Lincoln Zephyr Owners Club and the Lincoln & Continental Owners Club would both love to know of the whereabouts of this (I am a longtime member of both). I encourage you to join both clubs if you haven't and to tell them about your car, perhaps even do a short article about it and what you know of the history of it. I don't know if you've ever had a 1940-42 Continental before, but the gold tone on the metal trim is important. Lincoln called that "macoid gold"; it is kind of dull in appearance. It is rather some sort of plastic coating. In time, it fades or become rubbed off. Sadly, when people acquire a car like that, they often just buff off what remains of the macoid gold. Of course, that leaves all these trim pieces with an incorrect look. As it were, it looks fancier with the gold. Unfortunately, macoid is no longer available, as I understand it. What is acceptable in the Lincoln clubs is to have the macoid removed and the trim replated in real gold. Now that might sound expensive but I now a fellow who had that done on all the trim in his car and it was only several hundred dollars. Take a look at some 1942 Continentals on Hemmings.com and you can see what they look like with gold plated trim. I hope to see your car in an article in the Lincoln club magazines.

Thank you. What I do know is that only 8 coupes were equipped with the Liquimatic. All were built during the first week of January 1942. This is definitely one of them. You're definitely correct. Ford recalled all of them and the replacement process included the engine as well which was redesigned for the Liquimatic only. Somehow mine still has the Liquimatic oil pan. It doesn't line up with the bottom half of the transmission. I actually fabricated a lower adapter to line up the bottom bolts. The only one I know that survived is a Mercury unit in the Early V8 Ford Museum in Indiana. I'm currently working on the transmission, clutch, and engine and have a couple of other videos on this car up on RU-vid and will be making more soon.

I like these early Continentals. Hopefully you have found an original air cleaner in the last 4 years - so many of those always seem to be missing the air cleaner or have some little tiny fluted chrome air cleaner that looks like it belongs on a lawn mower.

Yes I have the original air cleaner. Thankfully it was with the car when I got it. The little one is only temporary and makes easier to work around while I'm working on it.

Interesting, factory turn signals, obviously an option as they were not standard equipment until 1953.
@gregdelagrange8573
@gregdelagrange8573 2 года назад
I believe turn signals were standard equipment from 42 and up Lincolns. I've not seen one without them. 42 to 48 Lincolns only have one brake light. The one on the spare tire. The tail lights on the rear fenders are turn signals and parking lights.

@1938lincolnk 2 года назад
Turn signals were first available, and standard, on Lincolns from 1941. Look at any '41 Lincoln, the turn signal is on top of the front fender, right above the headlight.

Thanks. Yes it is a V12. There's also a couple of videos I've uploaded on some of the resurrection progress as well. I'm planning on doing some videos on this car once I get working on it again.

Is that heater drawing hot air off the exhaust manifold? I thought that went away long before 1942.
@gregdelagrange8573
@gregdelagrange8573 2 года назад
They were still using those manifold heaters through 1948.

Could you explain for us in a video how to fix or tune up de incendido system? Can you modificate this system to a modern other?
@gregdelagrange8573
@gregdelagrange8573 3 года назад
The tune up procedure is somewhat long and is best explained by the service manual which is still in print today. It also requires the use of a distributor machine which is not common today. The ignition system can be upgraded to an electronic system and modern style coils but still requires the use of a distributor machine to set the timing correctly.
