Theres a procedure to starting them old harleys! If you follow exactly! 3 kicks is all it takes, even two kickssometimes! U tube has guys demonstrating! Wheels through time is one !
I used to say to people ' If you can start my bike you can take it for a ride. Each one has their own special combination and tricks. Never had anyone start it. Looks like its advanced the way its kicking back, check the timing. Good to see the old bikes being brought back to life.

I'm surprised how few people are willing to build a "start box" A.K.A. a bump start box that gets the rear tire rolling fast enough to bump start a bike that been sitting mothballed.

Kneeling on the seat is the correct way to kickstart a harley. I bought a 2013 wideglide and it was the first bike that I owned with an electric starter, now I'm hooked, but I still know how to kickstart a Harley.
You guys got a little size to you I weigh a buck 50 at 41 years old I was riding my dad's big twin his shovelhead when I was a teenager I would kick start that b**** like nothing 1415 16 years old I used to steal my daddy's bike he would lock the gate and I would unbolt the hinge and swing the whole gate open he thought he was doing something I had sportsters shovelheads everything I could get on in the backyard plus all the hot rods and 300 ZX and whatever he had in my grandma's backyard where I lived he was a mechanic I used to take his bikes and go see my little girlfriends as a teenager I was laughing my ass off watching you guys rookies trying to start this little Sportster I laughed and laughed I had a 66 Sportster 1000 do my leg that way when I was 17 I'll call it Sportsteritis it bent my leg backwards at the knee and I fell over and dropped the bike thought I broke my knee because it back kicked on me but it was hilarious watching you guys try to start this beautiful bike I'm looking on marketplace as we speak trying to find something like this as we speak and you guys had me laughing. I didn't even see it hurt your leg and throw you on the ground until after I had already texted that and then as soon as I finished playing the video I seen you fall on the ground and hurt your leg I said yep there's the Sportsteritis
Close the gap on the plugs. Check the ignition timing and if it still has points. The points gap. Your having ignition timing issues. Causing that kick back on a cold motor.

You just need to time the bike check the point gap rebuild the carburetor fix your oil leaks no problem, I started writing harleys in 1972 I'm now 71 years old I could have that bike running in 2 hours And yes left me on the seat get your balance correct should start within 2 to 3 Kix at most
Just be thankful its got coil ignition not a magneto. If you kick too slow with a mag there's no spark and you can wear yourself out so you can never get a good enough kick to get a decent spark.
The other day I stopped to put gas in my street glide and the guy at the pump next to me had an old shovel head. After watching him kick start that old girl and listening to it idlle, I was embarrassed to start mine up! Two people rode out of there on Harley’s that day but only one of us was cool! When you get it running right, let it idle in a crowded parking lot and watch how much attention you get! Enjoy it.
put in some new rings when you get time, cauz rite now she's hitting on one,, id say after a total rebuild you will still have an old school chopper...
This chopper is a mid to late 70's or even 80's bike . Early 70's chopper did not even had dick brakes on the back unless later on someone added disk in the back .
When they sit for a while and you start it the puffing smoke is evacuating the crankcase but at the same time is fouling the plugs. Get new plugs in her and figure out a way to retard that timing for starting. My pan has a timing retard and is easy to start. Without that it would launch me over the handlebars. Hook up with an old timer to help you because the starting procedure is very important. God help you if you flood it, makes it much harder. When everything is just right its very simple. 120lb women start there kickers all the time when the setup is good. Hang in there weve all been there.
There is a reason why there are so many videos of people facing the rear of the bike while kicking it over with their right leg! they were using their entire body weight to jump on the damn pedal.

Typical Ironhead. They love a lot of gas to start. The timing frequently need adjusting. You will probably never stop it from leaking. Once you learn how to dial it in it will start every time 3 kicks. 2 primary 1 with ignition on.
HAD A FOUPLE OF GENERATIO FIVE. SPORTSTERS...YOU MIGHT HAVE A BIG BORE KIT... IT GETS HARDER TO KICK....CHECK YOUR TIMEING.. AND COMPRESSION.....YOU HAVE A BAD VALVE GUIDE OR SEAL ON YOUR BACK CYLINDER....THAT WILL MAKE IT KICK. BACK...BAD.

Start from top dead center with tbe fky wheel then go for their . It should not be that hard the nuckles,pans. N shovels half a kick.if u have it timed right . No problem . If not your pissing in the wind . You cant push or pull start
