The old music was flawless. The neutral tone of the music was infinitely more suspenseful. It allowed you to assess the discussion and emotions on your own. Now, the music directs the viewer’s reactions with queues and sound effects for every little detail. I remember noticing when the show started tiptoeing in this direction around the time of season twelve. The old music was also somber and looming. Like an execution was about to take place. It really felt like you were witnessing someone’s dream come to end in front of the whole world. Survivor used to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. “The adventure of a lifetime.”

I’ve felt sad after someone like Skinny Ryan getting voted off in Pearl Islands but also felt ecstatic when an actual blindside occurs to change the direction of the game like LeAnn’s vote off in Vanuatu. The music just added to whatever I was feeling based on what I saw and I didn’t need to be directed to feel one way or another. It also just feels so appropriate whenever a big character gets voted off. I don’t mind the music changing all the time but it just seems so generic whereas the old music is SURVIVOR.
