James Cagney and Kim Novak presenting Susan Hayward with the Oscar® for Best Actress for her performance in "I Want To Live!" at the 31st Academy Awards® in 1959. Introduced by host Jerry Lewis.
This beautiful, talented woman is my great-grandmother. Reading these comments are very kind and I have shared many with her son (Gregory) whom is my grandfather. It’s with great joy to know many people still have such fond memories of her and her movies.
Mr. Barker, your great-grandmother was a fabulous actress! No matter who she played, she elevated the production by her participation. I have never forgotten her. Nor will I. We were blessed!
I am sure you must be very proud of her. Susan was a wonderful actress who has left a body of work that we will be able to enjoy for many years to come.
She was fabulous in the late 50's and 60's! Always playing the victimized woman (very common for the times).. Have you been told of Garbo visiting her in her final days?
Jack, I have such tremendous admiration for your great-grandmother. I have spent many years documenting her work online, and enjoying every moment sharing what I know about her, and her films. It has been a labor of love. I met Daniel and Andy Barker once when their band was in Kansas City. It was a real treat. I believe she is looking down and is so proud of her sons, Tim and Greg, and their beautiful families.
Now, finally, for the first time ever, Susan Hayward's Oscar win, complete with presenters and the only curtain call in Oscar history. Miss Hayward brought great dignity to her profession. I miss her.
Susan was one classy actress. Brooklyn's gift to Hollywood and as long as there are her movies available, she will always be remembered and I will never forget her. This is Susan's great night after 20 years chasing Oscar!!
When can you remember a time when a winner was so warmly congratulated by the audience, and when was a winner ever brought back on stage to take a bow? She was so loved, and so deserving of this accolade. Truly one of the greatest actresses to grace the silver screen.
That was an unbelievable line up of actors. Elizabeth Taylor was fantastic in “Cat on A Hot Tin Roof”- Rosalind Russell was unbelievable in “Mame”. The Oscar could have gone to either of those great actors. Susan Hayward was superb in “I Want to Live”. How could you really pick one performance.
I agee. The list to choose from is unbelievable. They all deserved it. That's why the voting works. Everyone votes and the votes are added up and the winner declared. Great as Liz and Rosalind were, I , personally, would still give the nod to Susan in this case. Hollywood agreed, but they were pleasantly surprised when she won. The respect they showed her with their vote and subsequent applause was remarkable. Being stuck in mostly B pictures, Susan had to cherish that. But indeed any list of nominees from these years read like a list of classic movies! How did they choose?!
@@blessOTMA Warner Bros and Paramount did nothing with her during her time there. But she was the queen of 20th Century for a very long time, a major box office draw in huge movies.
Nothing insulting about bringing someone back onstage. This proves Jerry Lewis had great respect for this lady. He also explains why. This was a wonderful clip!!!
I can't get enough of this great posting of Susan winning her well deserved Oscar. She finally won her Oscar after 20 years in Hollywood. She was one of the BEST, they don't make movies stars like Susan anymore. I will always love her.
What a beautiful gesture by the host Jerry Lewis. Class, dignity, elegance and sophistication seems to have gone out of our lives as humans sooner than we expected.
Don't see how with an Oscar and five nominations plus consistent praise throughout her career. She was greatly appreciated in her lifetime and still is.
A very deserved second bow. If anyone reading this has not seen I WANT TO LIVE ... find it, buy or rent it immediately. It is a gritty, timeless, and gut wrenching movie that will leave you spellbound.
This wasn’t actually to honour her, it was because the show ended about 20 minutes too early for it’s time slot and they had to desperately fill in airtime 😅
AT LONG LAST I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEE SUSAN ACCEPTING HER OSCAR AND RETURNING FOR A CURTAIN CALL! I HAVE BEEN WAITING 54 YEARS FOR THIS SO THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR THIS SPECIAL UPLOAD. VERY MEANINGFUL TODAY AS IT IS 38 YEARS SINCE SUSAN PASSED AWAY. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANYONE LIKE HER ON THE SCREEN - HER TALENT AND BEAUTY SHONE THROUGH IN EVERY ROLE SHE PLAYED.. SUCH A CLASSY LADY AND I WILL LOVE HER FOREVER. TRISH
THIS BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED ACTRESS WAS SO UNDERATED . She gave some of the most mesmerizing and unforgettable performances in many of her films . Susan Hayward was truly one of the few Hollywood greats . Beauty , class , dignity , talent , Miss Hayward had it all ...in spades . I was so very very pleased when she won , and clearly so was this particular audience . R.I.P. Susan Hayward.
@@lindaanthony7890 She was indeed a gifted actress and those in the industry certainly knew how talented she was . I speak more in terms of the Publicity machine in Hollywood in her era and the , public's perception of various stars because of the studio promotions of them. Susan Hayward was not treated with the same regards as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Norma Shearer and perhaps one or two others. One star who admired her talent enormously believe it or not, was Greta Garbo. Garbo went to see Susan Hayward when Susan was dying of cancer, and was bed ridden, in her final days. It was odd really because they were not friends, nor did they even know each other. It says a lot. Cancel Reply
Susan Hayward was so beautiful and so talented and this is her definitive role, and also one of the greatest performances in cinema history. Miss Hayward made a brave final appearance at the Oscars.
Walter Solley I adored her in "With A Song In My Heart" as well! What a shame that she had a life fought with problems and then died at 57 of brain cancer...
So true!!! There is a song from "Waterloo and Robinson", an Austrian Duo from my childhood days in the 70s - just listen: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9rqxPRbJeZ4.html
Comments like this are ridiculous. It was all image back then and half were nuts married a million times. You could name 20 current actress with more talent and class
Susan Hayward is the all time most brilliant female Hollywood star for me...She justly won her oscar for "I want to live" but she should have won other oscars for "I''ll cry tomorrow" in 1956 , "My foolish heart" in 1950 and with a song in my heart " in 1952!...Yes, I give her 4 best actress oscars!
Susan was one great actress that Hollywood ever had. It is such a pleasure to see the complete showing of the Best Actress winner. I love her so much, Susan will always be in my heart. Thanks so much for this one of lifetime posting.
I saw this video over a hundred times. I love Susan Hayward and she completely deserved her Oscar and the public reaction. However she should have win another for "I'll cry tomorrow". I really love her!!!!.
THEY ALL DESERVED TO WIN ! - THEIR PERFORMANCES WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN , BUT ANYONE WHO SAW ' I WANT TO LIVE ' AND WAS STILL ABLE TO BREATH WAS PROBABLY STAMPING THEIR FEET AND CLAPPING THEIR HANDS OFF ! WOW !
Kim Novak didn't know what to do with her hands, when Susan's name was announce. She finally did clap when Susan arrived at the podium.. Susan finally won her Oscar after five nominations. Love you Susan in 1959 and today 2020.
Every time...I see this video..I get chocked up..Susan deserved this award so much after 20 years in Hollywood. May you rest in peace, Susan. .you won the battle. ..
I'm thrilled to see this clip in its entirety, and I'm glad that someone pointed out that Rosalind Russell is clapping at the news. Russell herself said, "If it had to be someone else, I'm glad it was Susie. I have to admit, no one deserved it more than Hayward." It's a shame that Russell never won, but great that Hayward finally did. The two of them up against Elizabeth Taylor made this quite a race.
Notice the audience 's reaction when beautiful Susan is announced as the winner. She was one of a kind. Her dramatic talent unmatched. Only compared to Bette Davis.
Susan Hayward was a wonderful actress and deserved to win more than one Oscar over the span of her long career. I miss her dearly and am sorry that so many of her films are not available on DVD. In fact, she is one of several major stars who have never been honored with a collection of her best film work. And I admire her short, dignified acceptance speech. A lost art, as we all know, just by looking at the awfully awkward speeches given by most current winners.
I adore Susan Hayward even named my favorite cat Hayward. Just wanted to comment on how handsome and dignified James Cagney and Jerry Lewis were that night.
May she rest in peace in heaven. She won the academy award for the movie ''I want to live'' and yet she died so young. Today is March 14, 2022, her 47th anniversary. She is a shining star in the sky ♥
I love the class and beauty these stars had in those days. And when they won their Academy Award they didn't have to go on and on and on in their acceptance speech. Jerry Lewis was so thoughtful in calling that beautiful little Susan Hayward back for another applause which she so richly deserved.
I JUST watched The Lusty Men with Susan Hayward, Robert Mitchum, and Arthur Kennedy on TCM. It was terrific. Miss Hayward was a tremendous actress and movie star,
Ever Classy ; just the way any Oscar recipient should perform , for that brief , yet everlasting , moment . Lewis' performance was a gem as well ......
Great movie and FANTASTIC performance worthy of an Oscar in a competitive year for this category. I WANT TO LIVE is what used to be called a POTBOILER movie but her performance was NEVER melodramatic.
@@buddy8068 No and she was devastated by the loss. She felt it was her best work and that she would not have another chance. Little could she know that years later when she helped Walter Wanger who was down on his luck that it would end up with an Oscar for her. Later he tried to talk her into doing Cleopatra but she realized that she was not a good fit for the film and Liz Taylor ended up in the role.
@@carolkelly8848 From what I've read she thought the idea of her playing Cleopatra was hilariously absurd. She and her husband Eaton Chalkley got a good laugh over that one, as she paraded around her living room pretending to be Cleopatra.
It's all about Timing ..because for me Susan was absolutely fabulous in her movie I'll cry tomorrow ..and just could not believe that she didn't win an Oscar for such fierce work ...then came the yr 1958 and she did her movies I want to live.and was again blown away ..Geech this woman was beyond a regular good actress ..I certainly do place her work in the same lane as my favorites like Bette D...Joan C ...Barbara Stanwyck ..Katie. H I wasn't born until after each of these ladies were gone ..But surely their great work lives on...Thanks ..TCM...
I agree completely. I'm 72 now and Susan WAS my favorite actress even up against the top actresses you mention, also on my list, Now Voyager being my favorite Bette Davis movie. I was nine yrs old when I started watching Hayward, and even at that age, she somehow could crawl into the pit of my stomach and make me cry. At the end of With A Song In My Heart, as I started to rise fm my seat, a tear rolled down my cheek onto the boy sitting in front of me. At sixteen, as I was leaving the theatre after I Want To Live, my knees were just like rubber, after watching that execution scene. My god ! You know something, guess who went to see her with a bouquet of flowers as she was waiting to die in a Hollywood apartment? None other than..... the great Katharine Hepburn. Just stop and think about that. One can only conclude that Susan Hayward had had the same effect on Hepburn, and THAT is saying a hell of a lot ! Wouldn't you agree??
my goodness, when I finally remembered to look for this award video, I left it right after she finished her acceptance. Never remembered what Jerry Lewis did afterwards, WOW, though applause was just applause, wonder if anyone was uncomfortable with "special attention". No shouts, bravas or whistling this time.
Greetings to you bon1042... Now I wont go as far as to say " I wish I was your age ..b/c than I'd be a bit older than my actual 46 yrs ..however I will say that I do envy ppl in your age group ...who love the classic bl & wh movies ...because you got to see those golden movies we mention ...in their prime... WOW!!! ...what ? an experiences that must have been ...now about the jerry Lewis comment ..I admit that I didn't catch what the problem was with the fist applause the audience gave miss-Susan Hayward ...for me it was a lot of love shown ..I bet the women who had just loss the Oscar to Susan was ...LIKE!! .." WTF you want us to fake smile thu that again I be dam if I do "...lol.. God Bless you bon1042...PS...I will say that Miss Hayward had some tough competition that year so she must have felt like she truly earned the hell out of that Golden man... ..
Susan Hayward justly was given a curtain call for her deserved win of Best Actress for I Want To Live, a supreme achievement in acting. Kim Novak, James Cagney, Susan Hayward what a trio of real movie stars the likes of which do not exist in today's Hollywood
Back when actresses truly could act and had real class! Susan Hayward was unmatched as an actress! Short and sincere acceptance back then and they found no need to thank "even the family dog"! Refreshing!
Susan Hayward was one of the greatest actresses of all time, she needs to be recognized more today than ever, her beauty and talent was above and beyond anyone out there now, PERIOD!!!!!
The great Susan Hayward. I Want To Live is my favourite movie of hers. Bless her. She was wonderful. Such grace, elegance and class, and a rare moment when Jerry Lewis was nice to someone.
She richly deserved the Academy Award for her role. It was nice that she kept her thank you remarks short and sweet and did not (as one might expect an actress in contemporary times to do) launch into a political spiel or statement on the subject of the film.
The Brooklyn bombshell wins the Oscar..god what a beautiful redhead. Look at her colored photos when she was starting out but the acting talent she possessed matched her great beauty.. She was a true Hollywood legend!!
This was awarded to a very deserved actor.... Susan Hayward . Her performance in I Want to Live was brilliant. Like so many others, she had such a presence about her, one of control, strength, dignity and vulnerability. Some other worth noting- My Foolish Heart Backstreet I'll Cry Tommorow With a Song in my Heart Where Love has Gone.... Tragically, she passed away due to that hideous disease ( Cancer ) many believe developed while filming - The Conqueror in the hills of Utah while nearby testing of nuclear weapons and the fallout that prevailed. Same with John Wayne , Agnes Moorhead and many of the crew of that shoot. May they all RIP.. Thank you for uploading this Timeless footage.
On her 5th (I think) nomination for best leading actress, the great Susan Hayward finally won the award. Her performance in this film was spectacular, but as this was in the later part of her career I view it also as a nod from the academy to her entire spectacular career in total. Not that her performance in “I Want To Live” was not Oscar-worthy on its own merits; it certainly was.
