The Woman in Black isn't Susan Hill's only ghost story... this one was given a 'Book at Bedtime' reading on Radio 4. It's abridged, therefore, but still gripping...

Hopefully the collection will keep you going for a while yet, and I still have enough stuff to upload something new every day for the next 3-4 months at least... And later this week I'm starting a second channel, 'Mystical Magpie' which will concentrate on radio plays based on myths, fantasy and historical adventures, and adaptations of children's books. The first video on that is a 1990s adaptation of Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea, narrated by Judi Dench...

Perhaps John Moffatt's finest hours were as Poirot? If people haven't heard his radio portrayals then I recommend them....he imbues much humanity into the character.

I know he's very highly regarded for his version of the character - but in retrospect he was incredibly versatile. I've always found his Mr Straker in Salem's Lot to be quite chilling - and he's excellent as Sir Richard Brandon in 'Martin Conisby's Vengeance' (a play that will be on my 'Mystical Magpie' channel in a week or two.

Yes ! In terms of vocal technique he was actually superior to Mr Suchet whose Poirot accent became ludicrously mannered as time went on . I do admit : he DID look the part though.!

Hi. Thank you for this upload. I remember hearing this in BBC Radio 4’s book at bedtime slot. Did you know that Susan Hill’s novel the man in the picture was also broadcast in BBC radio 4’s book at bedtime slot? I think it was read by Nigel Anthony.

Good tale...but the end seemed a bit abrupt. Was something cut off?

Fair question - but no, the only thing cut off was the radio announcer introducing the 11-o-clock news. However, it could certainly have used a few seconds of silence to emphasise that this was the conclusion, you're right..!

About as scary as a repeat episode of Gardner's Question Time ! Similar to the vastly overrated " Woman in Black ". !

I don't know, whenever my grandparents listened to Gardener's Question Time they always listened to Sing Something Simple immediately afterwards. Truly disturbing.

Yes , with the aroma of Roast Beef and Spotted Dick wafting through from the kitchen...? The Past IS another country....Stands the church clock at ten to three....?
