Susan Hill's classic ghost story has been adapted several times for different media over the years, including three BBC radio adaptations. The 1993 serialisation was originally broadcast on Radio 5 throughout December, and has been repeated on BBC 7 and Radio 4 Extra many times since, including several broadcasts during the Christmas season. This is particularly apt since this serial retains the book's Christmas framing device. All four episodes are presented here.
The story was adapted again in 2004 by Mike Walker - you can hear that version here: • The Woman in Black (20...

I've listened to this so many times it's just the story that never gets old and ever so enjoyable

There's also a shorter 2004 radio adaptation of the story which I've now posted on the channel if you're curious. I think I prefer this 1993 version, but the 2004 play is good...

I’ve listened to many versions of The Woman in Black over the years and I think this is my favourite! Well done and so entertaining- I know the story inside out and backwards and I still listened with bated breath. Thank you!

I listen to this story once a night nearly every night to fall asleep to it's a really great story and just as good as the film.

Have you listened to the other radio adaptation? It's a little shorter but also a good take on the story - and on this channel... but far fewer people listen to it, for some reason...

I never tire of this story, it is such a work of the heart, and this was done so well!

There's a second radio adaptation from 2004 which may interest you - it gets overlooked in favour of this 1993 version, but it's very good nonetheless: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-um3UNgVZTnA.html

You might be interested to know that there was a later BBC Radio adaptation of The Woman in Black which I've also got on this channel - that version is only an hour in length but very effective...

First time hearing this and wow what a story, would love to have a conversation about it on here but wouldn't want to spoil anything for unaware comment readers, I'm so glad I found your channel! Going to binge listen to the rest of your videos now

It's certainly a classic of its kind - there's another, later radio adaptation of the book also on this channel (and I definitely recommend the 1989 TV version if you can find it on RU-vid) but another story that you're like to appreciate is Michelle Paver's 'Dark Matter', a ghost story set in the arctic. I've got an excellent reading of that on the channel. Though as you'll have noticed, I have a LOT on the channel by now. I keep meaning to do a 'recommendations' video or something to highlight particular videos that deserve more attention...

Welcome. There's a lot to look through by this time, but I've made a lot of playlists to help. I've also uploaded another version of The Woman in Black starring James Darcy which may interest you - it's less well-known than this serial, but it's still very good. Happy listening!

Thankyou. I recently collaborated on the book that gets plugged in most of the video images, but I figured that I should put the knowledge to good use - there are so many more ghost stories broadcast at Christmas than people realise... and plenty that weren't, which I'll get to soon. I'll only be uploading radio programmes, but my channel includes a playlist to places where you can watch some TV ghost stories for Christmas too...

There's a second radio adaptation from the early 2000s on the channel too, which you might like. For some reason it gets overlooked, even though this 1993 version is one of the most popular videos on the channel...

@mysteriousmagpie
@mysteriousmagpie Год назад
The biggest names in the cast are John Woodvine (the narrator, you might know him from An American Werewolf in London) and Robert Glenister as Arthur. The full cast is as follows: Young Arthur Kipps: Robert Glenister Older Arthur Kipps: John Woodvine Esme: Paula Tilbrook Samuel: Rod Arthur Tomes: Christopher Kent Bentley: Stuart Richman Isobelle: Jane Marlow Oliver: Jason Done Keckwick: James Quinn Mrs Daily: Diane Whitley Samuel Daily: Rod Arthur Stella: Jane Cox

The Great John Woodvine . ! What a magnificent voice he had. Somehow , despite a long and respected career on stage and television and his good looks he never became a " major " star..? Yet , David Tennant is...?!?!? Sums up the current state of the Acting profession in Britain..
@mysteriousmagpie
@mysteriousmagpie Год назад
David Tennant has his moments, but I do agree about John Woodvine. He was one of those actors I discovered playing a bad guy in a TV show and then suddenly realised that he was in everything. I loved him in American Werewolf, I always thought he made a terrific good guy - and needless to say they got him back to play Dr Hirsch again in the radio series - that voice was surely too good to do without.

He played the villainous Ralph Nickleby in the epic RSC production of Nicholas Nickleby back in 1980. What a cast ! And what a production ! We simply do not have that depth of theatre trained acting talent today. But glad to hear you are a Woodvine fan !!
