She describes herself as a very shy person, Fiona allowed her mentally to be more free with characterization, and I guess its stuck because it allows her to overcome that shyness.

Sutton Foster is a Broadway legend. I'll never get over how she wasn't originally supposed to be the lead actress for TMM, but she ended up being the perfect fit. And how she couldn't even get through the soundcheck for the 2003 performance because her voice was so tired, but she pulled it out of the bag for the actual thing. She's an utter star
@matthewalexander9514
@matthewalexander9514 6 лет назад
She still sounds fantastic, but the most glaring thing i've noticed about Sutton over the years is how labored her vibrato has come to be. In the first clip her vibrato is very free. Its kind of turned into a wobble at this point.. Still love her though it just bothers me
@stephenvaught7042
@stephenvaught7042 6 лет назад
It sounds like she’s using a very powerful mix in the original production and now she prefers to use a belt throughout the number instead of the mix
@arleneglassford4713
@arleneglassford4713 6 лет назад
I have noticed this!! It bothers me too and I love her so much! But wobble is the perfect way to describe it. Sometimes I listen to her and I'm like, "what is going on here?" Like her vibrato was put in slow motion.
@bethanyromo8396
@bethanyromo8396 6 лет назад
I'm pretty sure the "wobble" is just something that comes with age! I hear it a lot with older female performers. I don't think it's something they can completely control. Sutton Foster isn't old, but 2003-2018 is a 15 year difference, and a lot changes in our bodies within 15 years! She does still sound fantastic, though! 😊

Something weird I’ve noticed about Suttons performances is that over time, the harder/longer notes became way easier for her to do, but everything else got worse. Like, her vibrato VANISHED in the most recent clip while it was basically perfect in 2003, but the last note only seemed difficult for her in the first clip, while the more recent ones were effortless. Like, what the hell?😂

I've been teaching voice for many years and her 2003 was the most free. I suppose there were things in that production that when they get done over and over and for years and years, make the phonation tighter and tighter. The yodels in the 2003 version were a great thing for her singing.

@fureyize

You also need to put this into context. The original performance was meant to make the show known and she was more in character. After so many years of course it has become more playful and a sort of homage to the song. Frankly it would have been weird to see her do Millie in 2018 exactly as it was meant to be performed on stage in 2002.

see this is how you sound when you use a proper technique for 15 years, she didn't even have to lower the key...idina can't relate
@Isa-wisa2002
@Isa-wisa2002 5 лет назад
Drew Fitzgerald The shade is egregiously unnecessary. Idina Menzel may not have the greatest technique but, there are other contributing factors that explain why she lowered the key of defying gravity. (She sings in the original key, for years on end, eight times a week and the moment she cuts her voice a break by lowering it half a step you’re jumping down her throat?!) The reasons also have to do with the hormone change after birth. If you study voice, which I’m positive you don’t, you’d know that a woman’s voice drops significantly after birthing a child (something Sutton has never done which shows why she can still sing the song in the original key) another reason is Idina Menzel suffers from severe asthma, and breath support is avid to support any part of the voice. Idina’s technique has gotten better the older she gets, and the fact after 16 years of singing such a demanding song she only needs to lower it by half a step to sing comfortably is pretty damn good technique!! Thank you.

Shadow Morty Technically speaking, Idina Menzel’s voice has improved. She can sustain higher, fuller belts and I highly doubt every performance of let it go has been tough for her. You’re referring to her mainstream performances of the song however, when she’s comfortable in concert she’s dominated that song time and time again. Let’s fast forward slightly more recent, into the unknown which by far the hardest song she’s sung in the frozen franchise she’s now dominating live. Just a few of her recent concerts show such things so good try but you’ll have to come harder with the next one.

Love! Seth Rusetsky must be obsessed how she changed “Juliette” to be her own... I’m obsessed with how we not know her like this if fate hadn’t intervened and she didn’t have to take over in Millie for the lead who got sick. There was a story about how she gave up a lead in another show to be understudy and bam things happened and her career was recognized from that first show....

Her tone sounded more flowing and natural in 2003. I thought the 2010 performance sounded a little more whiny, and she seemed to try to push out some of those notes. 2018 performance wasn’t that great compared to 2003 either. I mean in 2003, she was probably singing that song every day and practicing to get it perfect. In 2010 and 2018, she probably was focusing on other things but the song was really still hers, so that’s why she had to perform it again.

As the musical director, I can't believe that this mistake was made. It should have been worked out in rehearsals, but you have to train your Orchestra. At the very end, the singer controls the cut-off or the stinger.. eyes on HER orchestra, not on ME! .... I put the blame of that last note on the musical director.
